  1. Then you better get in! I will agree it was the weakest dish of the night. That tongue was perfect so thin and full of flavorful salty goodness, but so soft. The steak was just amazing, one of the best steaks I have eaten. The oxtail were so good we (well not all of us, but at least half I would say) picked them up with our fingers to finish them off and the cheek in that sauce was very good too. I didn't think the carpaccio/tartare was the most whelming dish, it may be about the same now in my memory as the heart, but others in the group would majorly disagree, I am just not as into it. And the consomme was well just so good more than one of us picked up our bowls to get all of it. Really, this was one of the best meals I have eaten. It was so comforting, yet complex. I wished I had two stomachs for that night because there was just only so much you could eat.
  2. I second this all. Between the food, the wine, the company, everything was just an incredible evening. I think people should stop quibbling about the decor too, I thought it was fine. I am in absolute love with the oxtail served. It was so good. Actually I am in love with pretty much the whole meal start to finish. It was sooo much food, but so good. If you can do this meal, do it. Thank you Sthitch and Poolboy (and your lovely Wife) for bringing excellent wine. Even the dessert was just perfect with the rest of the meal, simple and perfect.
  3. Was at the rockville location a few weeks ago. I wasn't supposed to eat a pizza, but I did. Actually I ate half of mine and half of my friends we had the coppa and sweet sopresseata pizzas. Both were awesome. I know there are more refined pizzas out there, but this remains probably my favorite after Red Rocks. I really love it. Wait would have been long, luckily we scored bar seats. Had a nice glass of wine and a leisurely lunch. It was a great day to spend with a friend.
  4. No we won't be able to make a reservation before 7:30earliest, so Estadio is probably out due to crowds. We love Dino, but also have been pretty recently, but that might be an option Hubby does love some pasta since he doesn't get much at home anymore.
  5. Ok, so I know exactly where I would go for my birthday. But it isn't my birthday. I need to pick a spot for us to go for my Hubby's birthday with his sister and brother. Normally we go wherever I want to go or try, or where friends pick. He normally is happy enough to do that, so I don't really know where he would want to go, but want to try somewhere we haven't been in a long time or ever. He likes more casual spots with more comfort food. But he also likes Sushi and Thai (he likes Indian too, but I don't know about his sister). Some of his favorite places are Againn, Tallula and Ray's. Since his brother and sister will probably be footing the bill I don't want it to be too expensive, but it can be moderate. We all also appreciate a good drink. Well crafted cocktails or nice beer list. Parameters: Can accommodate gluten free Has some non-red meat options Not too out there in terms of cuisine (brains, innards, etc) The problem is I am indecisive today. Normally his siblings can rely on me to make the perfect call. But I just don't know where he would like to go. We can go anywhere in NOVA or DC. Hubby also isn't a huge fan of really crowded places if he doesn't have a reservation. He just is a bit impatient. Thoughts or ideas? I was thinking perhaps Ardeo+Bardeo, Firefly, Commonwealth, Bar at Trummer's on Main or ?????? Any thoughts on those or additions to the list?
  6. I really like that calamari. Probably my favorite dish on their menu. I think it is the sauce I like so much.
  7. And that is sad considering the speaker of the house is a sponsor... I looked to make sure the delegates I worked during my time there are all signed on (they are) or I was going to call them up and yell at them. I am tired of going to Western Maryland and drinking crappy wine.
  8. Happy Birthday DanCole! I wish for you lots of American Flatbread!
  9. My Hubby's too. With the amazing neopolitan pizza choices around us, he would rather have this, I don't mind too much since it means I can eat pizza too, without being bad! He has very specific likes and dislikes and is really amazingly good at eating wherever I really want to go and trying new cuisine so I have to throw him a bone every now and then. (He did get a mug with "World's Best Husband" on it for a reason.)
  10. Well if you are going to go all the way to Whitlows then go a block further to Liberty Tavern. In DC most of the places I can think of that are good are majorly expensive, like the Mandarin Oriental.
  11. 701 isn't too far away, sit at the bar, it's a nice bar and they might still have some specials, we had a great meal there recently. You can order off the bar or regular menu there. The bar at Central or Tenpenh are also pretty close, you just have to cross the mall... Tenpenh could probably get you in and out pretty quick.
  12. If you go, and are not drinking beer, get the root beer in frosted mug. I realize this place is not the most interesting cuisine wise, but we actually really like their pizzas and subs, it is very good morning after being out food or running errands and want a quick bite food. I really like the cheesesteak pizza, I think that is the name, thin sliced steak, mozz, peppers and onions and white sauce. And they have gf pizza, it's not cheap, but it's there. Their beer selection is pretty amazing.
  13. This is probably too late, but if you want a snack while at the bar, get the pretzels with deviled ham.
  14. Exceptional experiences all in one location in NOVA to me would be: Restaurant Eve (awesome drinks afterwards a plus), Trummer's on Main (they have a beautiful bar downstairs) and 2941 in terms of ambiance although I think it is a bit pricey for what you get. In you wanted to do Eventide for drinks you could go Lyon Hall for dinner perhaps.
  15. Any specific part of NOVA??? Where are you going to dinner? I really adore the lounge at Eventide for drinks and ambiance.
  16. Anyone eaten the Lost Dog Crust or the Fireworks crust? I am still trying to find a place with a gf crust as good as American Flatbread.
  17. I didn't know whether to post this in delivery or here, but wanted to share. The other night my husband and his brother came home for dinner. My Bil's phone rang and he answered and hung up. Immediately the dog went to the door sat down and waited patiently. After a couple minutes he started whining. Apparently Hubby orders too much delivery because now the dog associates answering the phone but not talking with delivery being delivered to our building. He was very disappointed not to be getting goodies delivered to his door. In fact he was quite miffed and pissed off that no food arrived. He pouted until I started making steak for dinner. That dog is way too smart for his own good.
  18. Got a dozen cupcakes from Buzz, four gluten free, and two cheesecakes. The cupcakes are very tall and a little hard to eat, but the gluten free ones were pretty tasty and it is hard to find gluten free cupcakes and we are not in Hello Cupcake delivery zone. Overall I was happy just to be able to have a semi normal tasting cupcake, and vanilla was much better than chocolate FYI. Hubby would have much rather had Georgetown which he loooves, but they don't make gf yet, said they were working on it though. Unfortunately I was also underwhelmed by the lemon cheesecake it was lacking in creamy texture and I thought the lemon curd in the center wasnt great so I avoided it. I think they just lack some cheese flavor and are too soft in texture need to be a bit more sturdy. But still happy they are coming to Ballston because they make more gluten free things than any other bakery I have been to yet and we need a good little cafe in Ballston.
  19. I didn't know this, I mean I normally eat there a lot (Arlington location), but never knew about rice crackers or veggies.
  20. To be fair I think we pretty much scoff equally at everything. There is nothing worse than a seven page menu filled with all sorts of crap. But then again Minh's and Nam Viet have huge menus and there is lots of good stuff to be found in there, so as always some exceptions. At least with one trick ponies you know if you like that to go and if you don't not too. I am a little tired of steak frites though, I think because it is one of my gf staples when eating out at "American" joints. My husband would probably never reach that same conclusion though, he could probably eat it nightly. I really hope his guest chats get better, they have been truly awful. And he seems intent on keeping them.
  21. Reporting from the field: I had a really stellar NYE tasting menu at Dino with absolutely no problems eating gluten free. It was homey, comforting and really well executed, and not a rip off. Better yet though, I had the seven course tasting menu at Blacksalt the other night for my anniversary and they made that gluten free with no problem. It was nice to be able to eat out and get a tasting menu and not worry or fret over anything. Really nice. Thank you Blacksalt!!! Anyone wanting to be able to eat gf and have a tasting menu should definitely put this on the list it was really good.
  22. I don't think so I went to it Wednesday and while it didn't say it wasn't happening (which it normally does), it wasn't happening.
  23. I thought it was a great episode. The person who went home had bad food and bad leadership. I also loved the quickfire. I thought it was great. My top three are Richard, Dale and Angelo.
  24. They can't be better than the doughnuts at Lyon Hall. And they don't make fun of their customers.
