  1. Yup, that was exactly my thought at the time...I couldn't believe they were serving stale Tostitos. And yes, I'm a big fan of Guapos as well.
  2. To be fair, my horrible experience there was six years ago. For all I know they now have the best Mexican food and the most transcendent tortilla chips in the area.
  3. I know that there are a lot of people on this board that detest Restaurant Week. I'm not one of them, although I'll admit that every year it's getting harder and harder to find bargains. Well, if you're a fan of RW, head over to Rasika West End (RWE)...if you're not, head over anyway. That was one of the best lunches I've had in a while...the fact that it's also a great RW deal is just icing on the cake. I started with the: Sev Batata Puri Crispy biscuits / potatoes / raw mangoes / gram flour vermicelli / chutneys A fantastic combination of flavors. I ignored the Palak Chaat to try something new for a change, and I'm glad I did. For the entree, I went with: Malai Fish Curry Halibut / onion / bay leaves / coconut milk Again, a first for me. Three or four big chunks of beautiful, snow-white halibut in a light, fragrant curry. Absolutely delicious. The RW meal came with both rice and naan, and I needed both to sop up every drop of the curry. I ended with: Gulab Jamun with Ice Cream I'm normally not a big Gulab Jamun fan, but its sweetness was nicely balanced with the cardamon ice cream. Tasty. As I said, one of the best lunches I've had in a while, and a great bargain for $20. Plus, you can walk across the street and have a first-rate espresso at Illy Caffe when you're done. BTW, should this branch off into its own topic, or at least add RWE into the thread title?
  4. Ha, I thought it was just me! Possibly the worst initial impression from any restaurant I've ever eaten ate came from the chips at Tia Queda.
  5. Look, you can blame Apple all you want, but it's simply a bad business decision for a company to have a website that can't be viewed on the most popular mobile devices. I'd like the option to run Flash on my iPad/iPhone, but it's never going to happen. I don't blame the website designer...all they care about is making the client happy, and a lot of them love bells and whistles...probably not understanding that the bells ans whistles makes the site unusable to many people.
  6. Sad...Persimmon is one of my go-to places in Bethesda. I can only assume that business has dropped off, and they're looking across the street at the always packed Food, Wine and Co., and hoping they can replicate their style.
  7. Of course it's always possible that he HAS experienced all the places you've mentioned, and the coffee at Bartlett is just that good. Unlikely, but it sure makes me want to go there to try it out.
  8. Yeah, it certainly would be nice if there was bit more context to his statement. Best restaurant coffee, or best coffee in general? Does someone who spends so much time in restaurants ever have time to sit down in a great coffee house? Either way, I've had too many good meals ending with lousy coffee...I'm happy to see coffee mentioned at all.
  9. So the fact that they sell a wide variety of products automatically means that every product is substandard? Did you have any coffee there? I've had crappy pour-over coffee with impeccably sourced beans, and great coffee at diners. Dismissing his comment outright because the coffee happens to comes from a wholesaler seems pretty silly.
  10. I'm reading it differently...I don't think that they were late. I think they're just pointing out that the restaurant was very specific about having everyone there on time when the reservation was made, and yet seem un-concerned about seating them significantly later than their reservation. I can see how annoying it would be if a restaurant is anal about the first, and dismissive about the second.
  11. Just a bump to note that the Dupont Circle location is now open, right across from Boqueria. I just tried a "Washington Avenue", with roasted pork and provolone. At least they say it was pork...it was impossible to tell what kind of meat it was under all of that rosemary. Just way, way over-seasoned. The risotto balls were really good though, and the cold subs people were eating around me looked good enough that I'll probably return to try them. Much better service than the Bethesda location...ran really smoothly at a busy lunch.
  12. I don't go enough to really judge where the overall quality is at the moment, but I can say that my lunch today, a serrano ham/manchego cheese sandwich served with a side of patatas bravas and a small salad for $9, is one of the better values in the Dupont area.
  13. And yet another overblown, flash based website that can't be viewed on a iPhone or iPad. Why restaurants have websites that millions of potential customers can't see is beyond me. Rant done.
  14. Interesting...turns out it's really more of a Wing Hub/Maggie's hybrid. "Wing Hub Reopening As Maggie's" by Carole Sugarman on bethesdamagazine.com
  15. Great, because what Bethesda really needs is another pizza place! Sigh. Wing Hubs wings took a dip in quality a while back...went from tasty small wings to bigger wings that weren't as good...but it was still nice to have them there.
  16. My wife and I have gone to Chez Francois for lunch, and then gone hiking at Great Falls a number of times. Looking for some variety, but in the same vein...any suggestions? I'd say within 45 minutes or so of DC ideally. Thanks!
  17. One thing I find amusing is that Jeff Black actually started this thread with this message...I'll re-post it here so you don't have to go back to Page 1 and scroll up: "Jeff Black here. My new Restaurant is now open. Downstairs is a Gulf Coast inspired Oyster Bar (Pearl Dive), upstairs we have bocce ball and a bar named Black Jack. Let me know what you think. JB" For me, if you start a thread on a discussion board in an obvious effort to drum up business, you shouldn't be criticizing someone that does exactly what you asked them to do. Perhaps next time he'll say "Let me know what you think...as long as it's nice."
  18. To be fair, it sounds like his rant was more about blogs in general, and having to deal with anonymous comments that may or may not have any truth to them. He used a very poor example in the dr.com comment though.
  19. Let me add another voice to those that found Don's response far more disturbing than the post in question. If you want to maintain an honest discourse, the only posts that should be considered unacceptable are those that contain inaccuracies/mistakes, personal attacks, or are obviously written by shills/plants. I know that Don values his relationships with restauranteurs, but trying to cement those relationships by throwing a member of this site under the bus isn't the way to go.
  20. Don tweeted and posted about it yesterday: http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?showtopic=17031&st=0&p=210561entry210561 Probably worthy of a new thread.
  21. Just for the record, new Spicy Chicken McBites are substantially better than the non-spicy version. OK, back to whatever you were doing...
