  1. I don't know, one single check back to make sure you're still OK on the beverage front doesn't seem like the hard sell to me. Sometimes people change their minds, start having fun, decide maybe a glass of whatever isn't such a bad idea after all. Likewise the perfunctory attempt at an upsell on apps and salad. He/she asked, you said no thanks, that was it. Unless you were somehow sneered/sniffed/smirked at, it doesn't seem to rise to the level of a technical foul.
  2. Fry bacon. Then fry sliced bananas in the bacon fat. Top juicy burger with both. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
  3. Hey, it was past time for a schism anyway.
  4. I think it already speaks volumes that they've done such a notably half-assed job with it so far, whatever the future may hold.
  5. It's a tiny little place just off Connecticut Ave. between 18th & 19th streets. Not bad. The owner is legendarily effusive.
  6. First they came for the Objectivists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t an Objectivist. Then they came for the WASPs, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a WASP. Then they came for the bloody Statisticians, and not before time, either.
  7. Jever Pilsener. The best thing to come out of Friesland since:
  8. Wowee! And there I thought "collaborative winemaking tools" were just another bunch of Helen Turley fans.
  9. Rodenbach Red ale with Cape Cod Sea Salt potato chips. No vinegar? Use what's to hand.
  10. I can't make up my mind about Dogfish. Is it possible that there's batch/bottle variation going on, 'cause I've gone off and on and off both the Shelter and the 60 Minute IPA in the last few years? I'm drinking a 60 Minute now, and it's taking names. But sometimes it's borderline treacley, for sure. Some others in the rotation: Founder's Centennial, Two Brothers Saison and a Munich Helles kick -- Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbrau Original, Ayinger Jahrhundert. Thank God for Joe at Julio's.
  11. Afraid my misguided countrymen at SAB have already done quite a bit to poison that well. Despite vowing they wouldn't shift production out of Pilsen, they now have (to Poland, then Russia) and I'd swear they're screwing with the recipe, too. Happily Czechvar (aka Budvar) still tastes like it's supposed to. Unhappily, its distribution stinks.
  12. There's a rumor out there that the delay on the Silver Spring branch of Ray's may be due to a last-minute rebranding. Apparently, Landrum's recent rants are a clue to the new direction they're taking. (Sorry Rocks.)
  13. I think Michael should write a letter to the editor. Those hacks make it seem like he was gratuitously insulting the good people of Arlington, when in fact his intention was clearly to gratuitously insult the entire Metro DC area.
  14. Founders Centennial IPA. Someone had to represent for the beer geeks!
  15. Shimba Hills is going to be positioned as a "activist" alternative for people who'd rather bust up a Starbucks than patronize one. A portion of sales will allegedly flow back to the downtrodden of the Earth, giving them license to deploy faintly sanctimonious slogans like "Great Coffee. Great Causes." As their brand strategy company rather baldly notes: "That approach allows us to position them as the underdog or "good" coffee company against the larger coffee conglomerates that people are growing tired of." Don't know what the coffee will be like, though it seems the retail stores are an outgrowth of an existing fine coffee importing business, which may be grounds (haha) for guarded optimism.
  16. I rye the day Jake sent me off on a wild goose chase looking for some goddamn 13 yr Van Winkle Family Reserve. Though I have to have a wru smile when I consider how ignorantly prejudiced I once was against American whiskeys in general, and rye in particular.
  17. That Paul, ass like a steel trap. Good memory, too. The integrity of OpenTable is not to be doubted. I once tried to bribe a certain restaurant professional to add scatalogically unflattering comments to a certain DR.com member's personal profile, but was rebuffed and roundly chastised for my impudence.
  18. Years ago, I took a somewhat fussy Austrian colleague down there and we were sitting at the bar by the stairs with the air conditioner occasionally dripping on our heads and rats running over our feet and he was all like "Ja, dis sucks, we should go" and then these two cool girls came in and we started talking and buying rounds and stuff and now he's married to one of them and they live in Frankfurt and have a son called Maximilian. True story. Brick of destiny, never doubt it!* *Advisory: This is off topic.
