  1. Looks like opening of China Jade Bistro is next week. Anyone know the background of the ownership or other intel? Don
  2. Not a surprise. I don't think this is a reflection on the market attraction for a deli. Merely that the folks who have tried in Bethesda have not had well thought out business plans. I think the planned deli in Dupont sounds like they may actually be doing it right.
  3. When I was there, the chips were the perfect round kind (tasted like they could have been straight from the Tostitos bag). For the area, IMHO if what you are looking for is reliable tex mex, then the Guapos a few blocks away is a much better choice.
  4. Appears that it will be called "China Jade Bistro." Don, can you give us anymore insight behind the owner? Is this something to keep any eye on?
  5. 2 new restaurants appear to be headed to the "glamorous" Cabin John Shopping Center: The Grilled Oyster -- Website -- Benny's Bar & Grill -- Facebook Page --
  6. Makes sense, although I have to say that the times I have eaten there it seemed to be jammed. However, the last time was about 8 months ago so perhaps traffic has taken a hit. While Wild Tomato is good, I always though the food quality paled in comparison to Persimmon. Let's hope the article's reference to making the new "Persimmon" more like Wild Tomato doesn't move the food in the wrong direction. I guess we'll see.
  7. Dinner there tonight. My fifth time there. Food and service continue to be good (not great) and service is consistent. My only major complaint is that the food is brought too quickly. We were in and out of there in 30 minutes. Margherita pizza. 8/10. Crust continue to have a nice crispy burn to it. Some may complain that the cheese tends to be sparse but I am not a big fan of an overly cheesed pizza. Chicken sliders - 6/10. In the past these have been much better. Tonight's had markings of being too home made - slices of the outer an onion. Obviously they need to pay more attention to the detail of makings these. I also think they could us more sauce. The bread is soft and tasty. Crab cakes - 7/10. They looked good but were mushy (a but like the balls) but had a taste of fresh crab. Spaghetti - 5/10. Still tends to be gummy but sauce is very good. Shrimp - 8/10. Sauce and polenta were light with a bit of kick from the red chiles. Shrimp are good but you can tell they were frozen. Fat Tire - 10/10. I continue to be thankful for its arrival to the dc area.
  8. Given their square footage and the price of Bethesa real estate, I don't think they can survive on alcohol alone. That said, there are a few establishments in Bethesda known more for drinking and less for food (e.g., barking dog; tommy joe's; union jack's; steamers) that manage to survive so maybe they have a chance. My bet, though, is that they are gone in a year.
  9. Agree. Can't go wrong with black bean shrimp or human chicken. Plus where else can you find another Larry La.
  10. Went there today. A bit more fancy than the street dogs of dc but a nice selection of toppinga and what appears to be hand cut fries. If all these burger places can make it, this may have a chance.
  11. I disagree. While the tavern had the usual bumps that are to be expected when a restaurant opens, the service has evened out and is fine. I agree prices are high but can you blame them if the market will bear the price. I would do the same thing if I owned the place.
  12. Sugo, River Falls Tavern and Wild Tomato are all good recent additions.
  13. When I have went with the family of four, we get the grilled bread, 3 pizzas (mozzarella and basil and I agree, nice char and on par with what we get at Mia's), chicken sliders (very tasty), and a pasta (usually just the linguini with marinara; my only complaint is that the pasta can be gummy at times). Sometimes we mix it up and add a salad or the shrimp dish (I forget the name for it). All have been excellent except for the aforementioned pasta at times. Also like the Fat Tire on tap. Still haven't figured out why this place isn't packed but I am not complaining because it is rare to be able to walk into a place with good food that doesn't take reservations and get seated.
  14. Interesting. Went to dinner here tonight (6:00sh). They were out of lasagna and amazingly, buffalo mozzarella. Not sure what to make of it (Melissa was not there as well), but hopefully they are not resting on their laurels with new competition coming into Bethesda.
  15. Thanks. Ended up going to Burger Joint (Potomac) instead, but don't feel bad we didn't go based on yor review.
  16. Wrong message board. Try help wanted. Perhaps things can improve there. Menu needs an overhaul IMHO - needs to be slimmed down and chef should concentrate on doing a few things extremely well. With current menu suggestig high daily food cost and their traffic, I have a hard time believing everything is fresh.
  17. For New York style pizza, Upper Crust on Pennsylvania Avenue (next door to Roti) is pretty good. Not like Giuseppi's Pizza was back in the day in Rockville, but close.
  18. I need to try as well. I have been search for a place like the taco places I ran across in a visit to Nashville -- Local Taco My link San Antonio Taco Company My link
  19. Everytime I watch Kitchen Nightmares I think of this place. The menu should be cut by at least a half and updated. I also don't see how they can have the turn over to keep this much fresh food given the menu and still make a profit. I suspect lots of use of a freezer and can and packaged foods (e.g., your bagged chips). I can only imagine how scary the kitchen must look.
  20. Went there today for lunch but never got to try the sandwiches. Arrived with the restaurant a quarter full. After our sandwiches still hadn't arrived after 40 minutes we left (waitress was basically MiA). Complained to the owner who said "I guess the kitchen is backed up." Prediction. Ths place is closed in a year.
  21. Hmm. Are out of town pizza chains the next "big" thing? Noticed a permit for the Upper Crust to open next to Roti near Penn and 18th (this would be a line of Breadline; Roti; Upper Crust). Appears to be a chain out of Boston. My link
