  1. Agreed. I was fascinated that Jeffrey Steingarten favored them a lot. I kinda like some of the slightly soggy ones too.
  2. This sounds weird. I mean I know they're more firm at room temp, but I always thought that it was when you fried at a hot enough temp it sealed off the outside instantly not allowing the oil to permeate to the inside. This sounds more like a long soak in oil.
  3. My friend and I got carryout from Momiji on our way back from H St. The 18 piece sashimi platter we got only had one fish that tasted decent. The rest were... weird. I do have a soft spot for their spicy tuna roll. The Alaskan (salmon, cucumber, avocado) was disappointing in its lack of balance between the three ingredients - you could mostly taste avocado and the rest not so much. I'll save my money for Kotobuki next time.

  5. You'll be the one on the table with the apple in your mouth?
  6. I believe Rabbi1969 was referring to no cost charged to the restaurant via OpenTable.
  7. I picked up some TJ's strawberry lemonade from the refrigerator section, thinking it would be better than their non-refrigerated stuff in a bottle. It has a very weird, slightly chemical aftertaste. As much as I hate to do it, I think I need to throw out the remainder because it freaks me out.
  8. The Logan Circle store of Pitango Gelato opens today. Noah is a really nice guy, and the gelato is excellent. His dedication to getting the best ingredients is pretty amazing. He definitely scours the area for the best stuff he can get. For a little more about his process I wrote about it on DCist. The pistachio flavor is wonderful.
  9. Eggplant salad. This was fantastic. Grilled eggplant, peppadews, pumpkin seeds, French green beans, mixed greens, ponzu-olive oil vinagrette. Sweet, bitey, sour, crisp, crunchy and fresh all in one place. Just a really, really beyond fantastic salad. Mmm...
  10. I also don't think I've ever seen someone who looked so much like a happy little kid though too. =D Can't wait to see where you land dude. Thanks Adam! BTW, Jake mentioned this last night, the bread at Pilar is so perfect for what it's used for - the white anchovies, the sunnyside up egg with salmon roe, goat cheese, conveyance for mussel sauce. Mmm...
  11. The one time I saw it on the menu at Pilar I had it, and it was fantastic.
  12. This was homemade: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheedge/380097789/
  13. I think TGIFriday's got rid of the flair thing in the last few years. I think they were sick of the jokes. There was some weird stuff when I went to the one at GW about a year ago. The waitress gave change from a wad of cash that she had for anyone who paid cash. Note that was gave change and not made change. Then it all went back into her server's apron.
  14. I stopped by after a quick visit to Target to grab some takeout. For my entree I ordered the pad kha prao, which is your choice of meat stir-fried with hot chili, green pepper and fresh basil leaves. I wish I hadn't. Despite being Asian and giving the double thumbs-up on the spicy, it was barely spicy. Surprisingly the green papaya salad I ordered was spicier. The brown gravy for the beef version of pad kha prao I ordered reminded me of Chinese food. Not terrible Chinese food, but something I could have made myself at home. Next time I will have to try and go for something that the others have recommended above. But I'd rather make a stop at Nava Thai before that.
  15. Me too! Macaron class?! I'd be there.
  16. I know the Giant in Van Ness has a surprisingly good, moist chocolate cake. Tenleytown Whole Foods has a pretty solid selection of cakes.
  17. When I was up in Baltimore I found pink Ting, which has lemon juice as well as grapefruit, and is obviously, pink. Haven't cracked it yet. Am interested to see the new Fanta Grapefruit that supposedly came out this year... supposed to be a lot less artificial compared to the Orange Fanta.
  18. I would definitely point folks to Michel Patisserie. Soo good. Would strongly recommend against those at Patisserie Poupon. EUGH.
  19. It looks like you can pick some up from the front, but it's not really a store? http://www.yelp.com/biz/otterbeins-bakery-gwynn-oak The lemon sugar is supposed to be a big favorite.
  20. I was over at a friend's this weekend, and I just happened to try a chocolate chip cookie from Otterbein's. They looked pretty unextraordinary from the outside, and probably why I never picked these up at home. But it was one of the best store-bought cookies I've ever had. I'm not normally a fan of crisp cookies, but this had an almost lacy texture, was rich with butter, and had a fantastic salt balance. The chocolate chips weren't necessarily the best, but clearly could kick the bejesus out of those mockolate craptastic Chips Ahoy chips. According to the site you can find them at Magruder's, Giant and Wegman's.
  21. I don't know if you're willing to go further afield, but perhaps a crab house might be nice? Esp. one with a waterfront view. Others have recommended Waterman's and Cantler's. It is admittedly a lot less fancy than the other choices, but it is something that I think is pretty unique to the area. If you do try to go, call ahead as it is the mere beginning of the season.
  22. <bump> Debating whether to bring the parents here this weekend. It's either this or pho and banh xeo, I think.
