  1. Things have really changed since Carole left. The crust is totally different. Not a ton of flavor development from dough that hasn't risen long enough. I don't think it's the same whole wheat flour blend. It doesn't have the nice random saltiness that I found so appealing about the old kind. It's softer and closer to regular crusts, rather than the thin, crackery crust that I enjoyed before. The sauce and cheese are still good, but it's a real shame. A can of Old Chub is only $4 though, and for all the talk of how great a $3 PBR is they go for $2.50 at Comet.
  2. Found the sugar free stuff at Rodman's. I imagine if you ask nicely you can buy a case. I had Frutta mango and passionfruit concentrates, so I added a splash of both of those the way Vita Coco does. Yum.
  3. Tabard Inn? Komi + The Jefferson or Tabard The Iron Gate is beyond romantic and gorgeous, but the food is really not great at all =( not in DC, but maybe Brabo + the adjacent Lorien Hotel (sub in Restaurant Eve here too)
  4. From what I've read it's a completely different operation and management from Big Hunt. The guy who runs it is just friends with the Big Hunt people.
  5. Oval Room has an ultra-late reservation. But I wouldn't rely on OpenTable since many restaurants don't list tables for groups that large.
  6. I cannot personally recommend any of these, but they seem good. Bacon of the month: http://www.gratefulpalate.com/index.php?p=MultiOption_31&parent=Page_47 NY Times Wine Club: http://www.nytwineclub.com/ - My friend liked this. Fruit of the month club - particularly the mango and exotic fruit ones appeal to me: http://www.1-800-organicfruitofthemonthclub.com/exfrofmocl.html
  7. I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread for Caribou before. They just started using Guittard chocolate to make their hot chocolate and mochas. I got a dark chocolate mocha this morning, and it is incredibly rich and tasty. You also have the option to get milk or white chocolate, and the medium is only $2 on Mondays. This is pretty amazing given that their previous hot chocolate tasted and looked like muddy water.
  8. I went to the Mount Washington location today. I haven't been to the one in Towson in years, and I wonder if I've just learned a lot more about what makes good sushi since then. The flavor of the fish was very good, but any other attention to detail was pretty awful. The pieces of sashimi were 2-3 biters, as were the rolls. The rice was overcooked and completely falling apart. Our soft shell crab roll was totally mushy. This place is good if you're looking for inexpensive, bulk sushi. When the $50 bill for 3 of us came, I thought... this was enough food for about four people, and this is how much we could have paid in DC for two and still had a mediocre experience. Man... Baltimore is cheap.
  9. Typically Ocean Spray Cranberry Cocktail is 10% juice, so 50% water might even not be anywhere near sufficient.
  10. Yea I would say the one issue with the evaporation, which we didn't experience since they were unopened is that the alcohol is the first to go.
  11. Yeah... we have some 30 year old bottles of Johnnie Black that have been in the basement. Def. drinkable, and def. superior to new, actually.
  12. I'd heard of some single moms making their PBJs for the week and putting them in freezer. Apparently the duration of time from leaving for school and lunch time was sufficient for defrosting. I could see where if you were just getting by with respect to time and money, how this would be an effective, though not ideal, solution.
  13. I hate that the geriatric Giant as Zora calls it doesn't have this system. Though I fear the poor old dears would probably just clog up the system more than just having the regular cashiers. The best part of this handheld scanner system is loading everything into your reusable bag as you walk through the store so you don't have to unload a cart and load up bags. And if you don't see the bag credit right away, it's also on the Favorites tab.
  14. According to the Wikipedia article, only the L-stereoisomer has any flavor, but I don't know if that has something to do with the 99% purity in that image.
  15. If you like the ones from Beck, I know that Wiedmaier's butcher shop in Alexandria sells them. They bake them throughout the day, so you can rely on them being fresh.
  16. I had a relatively big portion of pork belly compared to the bun size when I went, but that was when they first opened. I don't know if it might have started out larger, but it was a bit messy to eat so they may have reduced the size.
  17. I don't know if it's me or if the coconut oil they use is that strong. But I've been getting a hint of coconut when I've been trying these, which is fine by me. Just wondering if anyone noticed the same thing.
  18. I forgot to also note that I think sometimes it's also a question of quantity. My family has used MSG sometimes when cooking. They just use a pinch to enhance, whereas I think many Asian restaurants use it as a substitute for making an effort with the initial cooking. The one experience where we asked for no MSG at New Big Wong threw them for a big loop, and they just added a crapload of salt instead.
  19. Just wonder if this refers to identification via the scientific method. The article is not clear as to whether or not the concept existed prior to the identification as a separate taste. (My guess would be yes.) Much the same way that chicken soup was anecdotally identified as effective for helping respiratory infections, but the actual mechanism of it stimulating leukocytes was not proven via scientific method until some point within the last 5-10 years.
  20. Funny you should mention this - the signs at Rice Paddies say their food doesn't have MSG. Presumably that means they have fish sauce that doesn't have added MSG. I will say that after eating their pho, I didn't have the usual crappy feelings.
  21. I was looking for pho that wasn't too far a drive from where I live, hoping that it would make me feel less sick. I found Rice Paddies on Yelp, and saw that they had pho amongst other Vietnamese food items. The pho doesn't have a ton of depth, but it hit the spot for me and I've definitely had worse. The rice noodles are fine, and all of them automatically come with rib eye and flank steak. It is pre-topped with scallions, jalapeno, cilantro, Thai basil, and bean sprouts. It costs the same at Pho 75, but didn't require my slogging along the Pike or on the highway. They have a bunch of grilled items with rice and noodle bowls. They have a vegan version of pho, and they only have bottled drinks. No iced coffee here.
  22. I subbed dates in last night. Even better than the figs... esp. with the caramelization.
