  1. I can't tell you exactly what it is, but it looks like something that was put on an anti-griddle. Instantly freezes the outside while the inside is gooey.
  2. I had lunch here today. I ordered the bara chirashi which came with chawanmushi. I love chawanmushi with it's wonderfully brothy custard and bits of shrimp and lotus seeds in it. The chirashi was gorgeous when it came out - bits of salmon, tuna, mushroom, egg, shredded egg omelet, seaweed, eel and some other white fish I couldn't identify, some type of pickled veg, and ikura (salmon eggs). The fish just wasn't that good, and really just looks like trimmings. One of the pieces of salmon was sinewy and I had to spit out some of it. Any delicacy was also overwhelmed by shiso leaves. The two times I've had lunch here since it reopened leaves something to be desired.
  3. If I was a guy and wanted to impress a non-foodie hot girl, I would totally take her here. Because it is probably one of the most romantic restaurants in DC. Period. There are wonderful trees within a courtyard that canopy the outdoor eating area. There's a lovely walkway flanked by tables as a bar area. The interior is reminiscent of the lush lounge at the Tabard. But the two food items I sampled were some of the worst things I've had in a loong time. A goat cheese torte came out in a slab like pate, was pink and came out with roasted red pepper sauce. Not a nice little tart shape as we were expecting. And let me say again... PINK! It didn't taste of anything. The chicken liver pate with green peppercorns was extremely kicky, but was a scatological dark brown and not the unctuous deliciousness that I've had at other places. I'd maybe stroll over to enjoy the atmosphere after a dinner at the Tabard, but that's about it.
  4. My friends created this one that's sorta related that's called Cardstar. For all those grocery loyalty codes, you can enter your card number and it will generate a barcode that you can use at the store.
  5. I'm not sure what the prices would be like, but Cava?
  6. I had a coconut cream cheese frosted chocolate cupcake today. The frosting was weird - some kind of acidity to it. At first I thought it was maybe the lime in the coconut and the lime juice was in the frosting, but I don't think it was. WEIRD.
  7. I fed the American-Chinese food monster in me this weekend with an order of orange chicken, some steamed vegetarian dumplings and sauteed Chinese broccoli. The chicken was good and quite gingery though I would have liked it a touch spicier. I'm not a big dumpling person, so I don't really have much to say about their vegetarian dumplings. The Chinese broccoli was quite good and made me feel a little healthier despite all the unhealthy fried stuff. I appreciate that because it got delivered to my place they didn't add utensils, saving the environment a little bit.
  8. That is Danny's Tindahan that I wrote about upthread. I also wrote about it on DCist a few years ago.
  9. One of the DCist folks works with Teddy and she chalks it up to editing, etc.
  10. I think there's some stuff cropping up in Wheaton on Univ. near Georgia in the Anchor Inn area. At the minimum, a bakery. Danny's Tindahan in Tenley sells some prepared items.
  11. I think you can't make multiple reservations under one account at the same time... though it sounds like this person has no problem making multiple accounts.
  12. Quick question. What type of crab? Dungeonness, blue?
  13. Or mozzarella. Maybe these are just weird Belgian combos.
  14. This looked interesting, but some of the suggestions seem terrible or go against everything I've known about them. http://www.foodpairing.be/
  15. Bah everything is not open for lunch or I would have said Comet or Buck's. Redwood in Bethesda wouldn't be too far away. Maybe Blue Ridge if they're open for lunch. That close-in area is pretty much TEH suck though.
  16. I'm always blown away by how good the meats in the refrigerator case look. Today I got one of their prosciutto sandwiches with cornichons and mustard. I understand how that works on a charcuterie board. But if I ever order it again, I will be sure to request both on the side because OMG it was a bit like eating a salty mustard sandwich with some bits of membrane that had to be pulled at. At $8 it was a bit of a lean sandwich, but the French bread it was on was much better than most you would get this meat on.
  17. Didn't see the Post story reporting this, but http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/bal-s...0,4131002.story
  18. I haven't had that issue. Whenever I go to Rodman's they let me carry out my sixers. Then again maybe they also think that I drove there?
  19. When I was growing up my family would drink corn husk water. It's refreshing served cold during the summer.
  20. The tax also applies to paper bags. And the heuristics about the whole thing is interesting. People are not as active in bringing their own bags to the store to get the five cent discount, but go completely bonkers over a five cent tax. I mean I realize it's a difference off of a base rate, but people are much more reactive to paying more than getting a small discount. And I also find it funny that those most vocally protesting the tax in this thread are in the same family .
  21. The menu said there was new management, and I'm not sure if that's a recent development. I just noticed that there seemed to a fairly strong scent of star anise, and the brisket had a lot of undigestible tendon on it. It also didn't seem super beefy.
