  1. Daruma is closed. Drove up today and it was pretty much completely empty aside from some shelving and refrigeration units. ETA: Ren's Ramen is still open.
  2. Didn't think this warranted mention in the Events and Gatherings thread, but DCist is hosting their Exposed Photography Show Reception on March 6 from 6-10 p.m. at the Longview Gallery. For the first time, we've definitely put a lot of emphasis on having a nice bar and some good food. The event features a spiced rum punch from Scott Palmer of Dino, tastings from Leopold Brothers, three wines from Downey Selections, hors d'ouerves from Nage, and just for contrast PBR. Entrance to the reception is $5.
  3. The sushi petit from the chef's menu at Chevy Chase is an amazing steal. $24 for six pieces of nigiri - toro, salmon toro, fatty yellowtail, scallops, sea bream, and I don't know what the sixth piece was since someone else ate it. Most of them were pretty high quality, and def. better than the maki we had (spicy scallop and spicy tuna - the scallop tasted like crab stick).
  4. Well. I wonder if the server thought it was on purpose. Some people are generous, and maybe he thought that mhberk's father was being generous. I wouldn't have automatically thought it was a mistake. And also some servers don't look at the tip line until after their guests have left. It would sure as heck bother me if someone looked at how much I tipped while I was still seated.
  5. Pilar when it's on the menu has fried chicken that is quite delicious. Not traditional fried chicken, but the Taiwanese-style fried chicken at North China is nice and peppery with fried basil leaves on the side to boot. Despite what one would expect the fried chicken at Georgia Brown's is not up to snuff.
  6. The Adventist Bookstore in Cherry Hill might. I remember they had a lot of bulk grains and dried fruits, but call ahead. http://www.potomacabc.com/index.asp
  7. Got a little Chinese New Year delivery. Nothing very New Year-y, but still enjoyable. Really was surprised by their chicken chow fun, which wasn't too greasy and had a nice slightly sweet flavor. Their chicken and corn soup was sweet, and not overwhelmed by salt. Also ordered some go-to items: smelt and peanuts, Taiwanese crispy chicken, and roast duck. The duck wasn't as flavorful as the first time I ordered it, though some of the pieces were tastier than others. It is definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants that deliver.
  8. Is what you ordered yellow in color (from tumeric)? If so it's banh xeo, and the key is to mash it up with some nuoc cham (the usual Vietnamese condiment sauce) and veggies. That's how it's usually eaten, and by itself can tend to be a little bland.
  9. Well if you read the other thread, Hard Times is a decent option with a location in Clarendon. I do enjoy them finished on the grill. I concur with Heather that Quarry House does some decent ones though I wish they had a little bit more sauce (which I imagine is remedied by asking for it).
  10. Pretty yummy. Lots of love and attention paid to the skillet frying. Would have liked a little more intensity in the coating, but still super moist and delicious.
  11. I don't know if I am reliable, but allegedly Hooters is better known for their dredged wings. And in my opinion dredged wings suck. Their non-dredged are disgusting. Flaccid and with a pretty ineffectual sauce. The one time I went to that Hooters I walked out feeling like I needed a shower. Not because of smut, but because the air feels thick with grease. I believe Looking Glass only sells their wings on Sundays and Mondays now... or maybe it was Mondays and Tuesdays. Regardless, of my travails they are the best. I like the sauce at the Big Hunt, and at 20 (25?) cents/wing at HH they're well worth it.
  12. Yes. Spices/Nooshi both sell it. It's a little less gritty and musty than MK's version. My guess is MK uses more belacan.
  13. I'm going to post this here since I don't think it purely is a PS7 issue. What bugs me about this the most is that this is going to empower people to go on one of the local chats and complain, thinking that there will be some similar type of reaction. This sets a precedent and puts the onus on other owners to take similar actions. I know that other owners may likely not choose to accept this pressure, but it's a dangerous road.
  14. I disagree with this analysis. In the short term, yes, you are penalizing the wait staff, but in the long term the odds are that this ultimately penalizes the owner far more. Good wait staff are hard to come by, and as was demonstrated in Peter's letter, a good one will find a new job quickly. If they can't find a new job quickly, well then maybe they were not in the appropriate profession to start.
  15. It's been around for a few years now, and replaced Dragonfly. It's pretty much a club, from what I can tell. Does that mean it's not good? Who knows? Probably?
  16. Yeah the density of lead sounds about right. That's how it always was growing up in my family... Could be interesting to make a version similar to arancini..
  17. What should absolutely not happen is bring a dessert without asking the people paying, and then charge for it. This happened to us at Marrakesh, but that place is a bit of shit-show with regard to anything approaching proper service (of which I believe had actually been posted about, and deleted, but you can see discussion of on the WaPo comments).
  18. Revisited last night. I'm really sad to see the transformation of the pork belly bun from the way it was during the soft opening period. The change really seems focused on the issue of being eaten tidily. The original, messy as it was, was wonderful. The bun is twice as thick now, and the meat is probably 1/4 of the original. The best part of eating a pork bun has always been having the juice saturate the bun to give it flavor, which the new anorexic slices don't really allow for. Growing up, I would eschew bun fillings to eat the juice saturated bread. Ditto with wonton skins. I think the dish is always going to be a messy proposition, in the same way tacos are, so maybe the stylistas of 14th Street just need to suck it up. But seriously... the octopus with chimichurri and Asian slaw? YUM! The octopus is so tender, and I love the heat of the chimichurri up against the Asian slaw. My companion and I were discussing how nice it would be to have a sort of panchan-type plate for a few bucks - some kimchee, some Asian slaw, maybe some other vegetable to make a trio. I also wouldn't be averse to being able to order a few pieces of bun for scooping up sauces from plates like the pork carnitas. The pork carnitas with kabocha make me a happy girl.
