  1. They used to credit accounts if the restaurant closed -- happened to me before. Do they still do that?
  2. Yay, ferment everything! This is great. I am heading out that way for two days, so can't wait to use the list!!
  3. I only really meant that if you are used to one type of flavor, then you may dislike other types. For example, I really like soy milk for my lattes. So if I get milk or rice, almond, or hemp milk for my lattes, I will think it tastes strange because my taste buds are trained to associate soy milk taste in lattes. That was all I meant. Did not mean to sound condescending or snobbish. Was merely thinking too much and being my usual geeky-self of overanalysing. *Thanks, Don. Really appreciate it.
  4. Kind of bittersweet (not sure if I am using term correctly) to find out that Colectivo (fka Alterra) has stayed true to its roots. I regret not trying a cup of joe from this "new" namesake, from this past visit, now knowing it is the same roaster, integrity-wise. On the other hand, I still was quite happy to visit the tried-and-true: Culver's, Kopp's Custard, and the beloved V. Richard's Bakery. The only new place I tried this time was the pretty tasty, AYCE Fushimi Buffet. I now realize that I am a bit different from the rest of my family in my restaurant choices--I state this because I know Milwaukee is coming into its own with fine dining and is truly worthy of exploring. However, I guess I need to visit some time by myself to uncover these gems....
  5. I'll pipe up and say it was a "really, really off day[.]" I've not had a bad cup at either the Cap Hill or Union Market locations, and to me, their coffee and espresso is usually pretty strong. When I last went to the Union Market location, I badly needed a latte to wake me up before I drove home to Virginia, and it did the trick quite well. They are pretty nice too, so I'll take a gamble and say that if you experienced a bad cup, they will probably make you a new one. Maybe you should ask for a pour-over instead, so the coffee can be more tailored to your tastes? Although, if you are used to k-cups and Starbucks coffee, then your taste buds might reject more than few coffeehouses around here, perhaps?
  6. Sadly, I went by hoping to take advantage of a recommend place, only to find a note on the door stating, "We are going out of business." Bubble Laudromat (link to Yelp site) in the Mark's Duck House plaza was a nice substitute. $1 per pound, with comforters between $10-20. Also has hypoallergenic detergent options (always nice).
  7. I read the article and I think it provides some good tips for parents who are kind of scared about making foods for their children at home, or other parenting-related stuff. I'm not sure I saw any superiority, but maybe that showed up more on the chat? Having been through this phase, I found it easier that gelittleman was more of the adventurous type. Mainly because this meant: 1. He can have a balanced diet; 2. I only have to make one meal instead of two; 3. I did not have to worry about his getting enough nutrients for those important first years of growth; and 4. I also did not have to worry about making the same thing repeatedly, which is torture for some of us. Those of my friends' children who were picky eaters had to: 1. Limit the restaurants they can go to because their child doesn't like most of the stuff on the menu of those places they used to frequent; 2. Had to cook multiple meals at home to cater to their picky eater; 3. Had to supplement their diet with products like Ensure in order to catch up on nutrients; 4. It was a bit heart-breaking to see them with frustration or worry at the fact their children limited their palates; and 5. It made playdates hard, if a meal was involved. Meaning, if the parent of the place where the playdate was held made something the child did not care for, well, the child does not or will choose to abstain from eating. Offering another viewpoint.
  8. Biscuit Girl - I thought VCA stood for the VCA Animal Hospital in this region? Regardless, I've found, although this was about eight years ago, they had the friendliest staff and cheapest Emergency Services out of the major pet hospitals around. When my male greyhound had a neuro-autoimmune disease, not only did the vet neurologist examine him ever so gently, she also always patiently answered my questions and carefully explained things and options out for me. I'm glad to hear this is still the case. Mary Tang
  9. Odd - four of us went Saturday for lunch and there was at least five tables, two servers. Service was very attentive with water glasses. Food seemed fine, and the manager came over, making eye contact and all. Wonder what happened?
  10. I wonder if HT had to wait until they got the final figure to file the lawsuit. This was a foreseeable move, as the rumors I heard all pointed that it was Arlington County's sewer system that failed. I guess they were not able to mediate?
  11. ^ Everyone should listen to Mr. Bucher. This is a wonderful little joint (http://www.kanpaisushi.com/), with some nice sushi-grade options cut straight from the fish, iirc, if you wish to make sashimi or nigiri at home. I stumbled upon this little gem after seeing Hinata was closed for summer vacation, late two Saturday afternoons ago. I kept the order simple: 1 fresh crab California Roll and an order of 5pc pick your own sashimi (2 salmon, 1 tuna, and 2 yellowtail). My stomach didn't feel upset or overly heavy, which was nice, meaning the fish is fresh. The sashimi had a nice, clean taste to it. I think my tab was $18, after the sashimi, maki roll, and a daifuku (can't resist mochi), which wasn't bad for the value. It is really hidden! In the shopping center right next to True Value, I think. I also think I might have to order take out again this weekend....
  12. Many thanks to lperry for recommending the Master class! I was inspired, took their free seeds, attempted to plant and label, and I'm surprised little sprouts are appearing already!! Fingers crossed...
  13. I vote for wearing a wrist or elbow support when you chop instead of the new equipment...
  14. Congratulations and yay for following your dreams!
  15. Okay, two questions: 1. I threw an avocado pit in a pot for fun and now it started sprouting. What do I do? Do I need to clip it or anything? 2. I found slugs, beetle and earthworm in my on-a-whim compost. Do I need to fish the slugs out? Thanks!!
  16. If this is the place I think it is, then it right now is called "夢" or dream in Chinese/Japanese Kanji. I know nothing else. End of reprt.
  17. I don't think Lotte has it, at least the one in Fairfax, but HMart and Super HMart has it, as that was where I bought Tamaki Gold before. El Grande in Springfield has it too. Great Wall used to have it, but I'm not sure if they do anymore, since I only go to HMart for rice now (more variety and the ability to mix it with Korean rice/grains options are readily available). If I recall right, the smallest bag runs about $9-11, depending on where you buy; the medium sack ones are about $22-23(?), and I've not purchased a large one, so I'm not sure.
  18. Not related. But the Chinese underground has been thumbs-up-ing this place. Ask for the Xian menu, as that is supposed to be the Chet's hometown speciality. But this news was good only as of three weeks ago.
  19. Sorry to bow out, but this week has been crazy. So a conflict occurs ans I will miss you all... :-(
  20. Say "Hi" next time! Little man asked to buy a pint of the Clear Springs's Honey Yogurt, to which he promptly drank 3/4 of it, surprisingly. It was good to see Clare there.
  21. Maybe not this one but something like this?
  22. I seem to recall a cab driver once told me the owner was his friend, who, like him is Pakistani. But this was awhile ago that I had this conversation. So, I'm not proof positive, other than I had to go try it...
  23. Just the Astro doughnuts and fried chicken, but you'll have to wait a bit in line for it. I'd take chances for the food trucks near there or Bibiana. For quick bites, District Taco, Devon & Blakely, Chop't, or Pret are good fall backs. Don't forget to stop for coffee at Sip of Seattle!
