  1. Be still my heart. And I agree with this:
  2. Do I have to choose? Those tamales sound as bad as the Pad Phrik Khing I had at Benjarong the other night. Oy.
  3. You're not out on a limb. Sure, it's their fault for the oversight, but an honest person would pay for what they consume, IMO.
  4. Fresh corn sauteed with various squash, butter, S&P, fresh basil and a little cream and fresh tomato added with the heat off. Topped with shrimp and more basil. Macon-Fuisse to drink. Fire Fly Farms Mountain Top Blue with Atwater walnut raisin bread for dessert.
  5. Consider this is the gastro equivalent of "What are you wearing?" Right now I'm eating a late lunch: a bagel thinly spread with cream cheese and piled with cold smoked wild salmon, slivers of vidalia onion, and very thin slices of brandywine tomato, pausing every few seconds to lick the tomato juice running down my arms. What are you eating?
  6. Damn! Wish I could've been there, but husband was off slaying Saracens or some such so I was on kid duty. More details please.
  7. This morning at Dupont: apricots, a lovely blue goat cheese from Firefly Farms, raisin walnut bread to go with said goat cheese, squash, cucumbers, Wheatland Farm tomatoes, and more sungold cherry tomatoes to replace the entire pint that the children ate yesterday.
  8. Emma and I visited New Morning (36th & Alton) today. Our haul: peaches, Brandywine field tomatoes, blackberries, corn, lettuce, sungold cherry tomatoes, chives, tarragon. basil, little sweet plums, and a bag of very fresh okra. We scarfed plums on the way home. Ian has eaten most of the pint of sungolds.
  9. I had scallops again. Someone should make me order something else next time just so folks don't think I'm obsessed or something. They were, of course, perfectly cooked, sweet and creamy inside. An excellent match with Bourgogne Blanc I was drinking. And a lovely heirloom tomato salad (thank you Chef Power) with basil oil. The first good tomatoes I've had this year. And beet salad and chocolate torte. That torte is excellent. Imagine the most intense chocolate custard ever and that's what it's like.
  10. Stop that. It's gross. Premade sandwiches... ::shudder:: Armands serves pizza by the slice. Deep dish is bad, but the thin crust is OK.
  11. Cheerios with skim milk, but what I really want is that omelet. Damn! Oh, and lots of coffee.
  12. I'll be at Corduroy's bar at 6:30 With Hannah and Mr Hannah (not sure what your dr.com handle is) enjoying scallops and white burgundy before heading to the 9:30 Club. Perhaps we will see some familiar faces.
  13. We called tonight on a whim and got a reservation for next Wednesday at 9pm. I'm very curious about the wine list - can anyone provide an update?
  14. Uh oh. Vace overrated? I've never bought anything but ingredients there, but many folks whose palates I trust speak highly of it. As for the Italian Store, why bother with pizza when you can get a sandwich?
  15. Had a spur of the moment opportunity to try Hollywood East with Mr and Mrs B and family and the two poorly behaved little Shorters last night. We ordered: Cuttlefish with lightly pickled daikon Liked this, not sure how other members of our party felt about it. Pan fried meat dumplings Good gingery pork filling, but I prefer a lighter dough and less greasiness. Not quite up to the A&J standard. Salt and pepper anchovies Tiny, tasty, crunchy whole anchovies showered with fresh chilies and ginger. A hit with both my kids, and me. Razor clams with black bean sauce Good fresh clams and not overwhelmed by the sauce. Emma loved the cool shells and took one home with her. Oyster and pork casserole Loved the flavor combination, but it would benefit from smaller oysters. These were gigantic, among the largest oysters I've ever seen, and overwhelmed the sweeter pork belly. Steamed Ling fish fillet with ginger and scallions Tender and fresh, if somewhat bony. Emma had this for breakfast this morning. The Busboy kids reported that the Chicken Fried Rice and Beef Lo Mein were good but bland. The Shorter kids' chicken with broccoli in brown sauce was reported as "yummy" and nearly finished. We ordered far too much rich food - a vegetable choice would have balanced the meal. I was not overwhelmed by this place and on the whole prefer the old Hollywood East or New Fortune in Gaithersburg, but must try the dim sum (served Sat and Sun), and a dinner with some of the vegetable offerings before passing judgement.
  16. Wouldn't those be new spring potatoes? As opposed to mature potatoes that perhaps have been stored for a while?
  17. Sounds great, but I am taking Emma to Wolftrap to see Peter Pan tonight, with 6 other little girls and their moms. At least we'll be tailgating so we won't have to eat the food there, and I'll be bringing a thermos of margaritas to help me through the experience.
  18. Count me in the pectin camp as well, just because it allows you to cook the fruit as little as possible. That said, those low-sugar pectin recipes are a waste of good fruit and an expensive lesson - the lesson being if you don't want sugar in then don't make jam.
  19. How about mascarpone with some sort of almond flavoring? or some lemon zest mixed in?
  20. Thanks for posting this. Your description of the wine list was one of my favorite eG posts.
  21. This is my first. Read the thread title.
