  1. Had a marvelous lunch at Rasika with a group yesterday. The Palak Chaat was as good or better than ever, perfectly crisp and incredible thin spinach, just the right amounts of yogurt and tamarind and tomato. Made new converts immediately. We shared the chicken Makhani (thanks to recommendations here), butternut squash bharta which was fabulous (mashed roasted smoky squash, with onion and tomato and spices all incorporated within, savory and perfect, not a bite of it was left), a side of paneer, a side of dal, raita, bread basket, and lemon cashew rice. The lemon cashew rice is definitely worth the increase from plain rice. The bread was crisp on one side, fluffy on the other, and delightfully chewy. We left nothing behind but the plain rice and the sauce from the chicken. My one quibble is that I have liked the dal more in the past because it had more lentils and less liquid - this may just be a serving issue. The food was quite slow to arrive (appetizer came quickly but everything else took a very long time, and we were twice told it was on the way). Service was good in other ways, including the waiter overhearing us discuss that it was one of our birthdays, and then bringing a dessert on the house with a candle though we hadn't ordered dessert.
  2. I haven't been back in a while, but that was definitely my view too. (I should go back soon and get a ginger salad.) Full Kee will still get me to visit when I'm craving shrimp dumpling soup, and their vegetables (snow pea shoots, baby bok choy, and the like) were always good and cooked just right, if perhaps a bit heavier on the oil than I like. But Burma is always my first choice.
  3. When did the chef leave - was it a while back, or recent? About to make a reservation but saw in the Dining Guide that DonRocks noted that the chef had left.
  4. Shoot! I'm sorry to see this. On the other hand, I'm not shocked -- there have been multiple times when I have called in an order (they're my closest options for shu mai and California rolls, which is what I crave when my stomach's upset) and they have said it would be an hour rather than the regular 15/20 minutes, or even that they couldn't take orders, because they didn't have enough sushi chefs that evening. Something definitely seemed to be wrong. They had decent sushi, but their miso was not good. I'll go back to getting it from Whole Foods or from Asahi in Courthouse Plaza.
  5. I'll have to try Ching Ching Cha another time - friends were looking forward to English-style tea. But it sounds good for the future. I think we're set on Tea Cellar. Don't think that's as hyper-upscale and dressy.
  6. Thanks - I love lobster rolls, will definitely come try those! And good crabcakes nearby would be an excellent thing.
  7. Any recent experiences? We're going to tea in Georgetown, tentatively decided on the Tea Cellar but could change our minds and go to Mandarin or Ching Ching Cha (have asked the others if they'd prefer finger sandwiches/pastries or dumplings/custard tart, will see what they say).
  8. Thank you, Don! Logistically, Rocklands is what works for us for pickup tomorrow (because our time together is very short and we have to go by it anyway), but we will definitely be going to Backyard Barbecue very very soon. Probably within a couple weeks, with my mom who loves ribs. Definitely want to support their business and also have the best ribs inside the Beltway.
  9. Thanks! Our group's too small to order catering, but I think some of us will go to Rocklands together to pick up an order. (Definitely prefer their ribs to Red Hot, lately.) Good to know about catering options for when we might have a larger group.
  10. Do you know of any places in Arlington with good ribs that does delivery? Family visiting Sunday, don't want to go out to pick up takeout during their short visit, but they would love ribs.
  11. I miss Cafe Dalat in Clarendon -- their cari chay (tofu and vegetable curry) is something I haven't found anywhere else, at least not tasting like Dalat made it, with tender but slightly chewy tofu infused with creamy curry flavor, and vegetables cooked tender-crisp, and glass noodles soaking up the sauce. And they had the best pho in Clarendon. Hsian Foong in Arlington - home of Hsian Foong chicken (on little styrofoam noodles, in a barely-there red-tinged sauce full of flavor) and perfect sesame broccoli (sigh).
  12. Looking forward to having good seafood in Clarendon again! (I miss Clare and Don's.) We used to go to SoBe a long time ago. What do you recommend (non-raw) besides the fish tacos? Also, will you be having non-alcoholic cocktails? Thanks!
  13. Thanks so much, Joe!! Will look at these places and get ourselves to Suicide Bridge as well as Palm Beach Willie's. I saw very strong recommendations for Bartlett Pear Inn in Easton and we'll go there. If you have any other recommendations for Easton, would love them - very casual is fine. We don't eat hard-shell crabs, but I love soft-shells and crab cakes, and the rest of my family loves rockfish and other fresh fish.
  14. Thank you! good thing I asked before I tried to go for brunch! We'll be there next week and I need to make a reservation - will check back here beforehand to see what you say about your recent visit. (Coffee doesn't really matter to me, so I'll pay attention to the food recommendations.)
  15. Looking around more, I think it's covered generally under Baltimore and Annapolis -- found recommendations for a couple places (Bartlett Pear Inn in Easton, Bistro Poplar in Cambridge), though not centralized. But that helps a lot. The restaurant on the dock that we went to last time was Palm Beach Willie's -- not a name that inspired confidence, but it was terrific, very local, very fresh, very homey. They were hit by a huge party that arrived a few minutes before us, so it took quite a while, but it was well worth the wait. Some kind of sweet potato side was wonderful, too (can't recall the specifics). --- [The following posts have been split into their own threads: Bistro Poplar (rorkin)]
  16. Darkstar or others who've been -- do you recommend it more strongly for brunch or for dinner? (Staying in Cambridge for several days coming up, would definitely like to go here -- and the tween and husband would both love the root bear float.)
  17. It's a casual place and as such, is likely to have kids, who are not always quiet (as the parent of a tween, who was loud as a younger child, I have experience). I certainly wouldn't find that out of line in a casual place, and appreciate family-friendly restaurants that have good food. When I want a peaceful, quiet restaurant, I go somewhere more upscale/fancy (and even then may not find it). I appreciate reviews that mention noise levels in places that you'd expect/hope to find fairly quiet. Since this isn't a place for a romantic evening or business meal, it wouldn't bother me at all.
  18. Thanks! I definitely will go there another time - this week, the group decided on El Paso Cafe (which takes reservations), but we're not far and will try Ravi soon.
  19. Are there long wait-times at Ravi Kabob on weeknights, to eat in? Looking for a place to eat with a group of 8 or 10 (including 2 or 3 tweens, pickiness level unknown), pre-theater at TJ Middle School in Arlington, on a Thursday night. Closest options look to include Ravi Kabob, Lost Dog Cafe, Thai Square, El Paso Cafe, Pupuseria Dona Azucena, and Bob & Edith's Diner. (Also EatBar, but since they don't take reservations and we have theater tickets for 8 p.m., I'm not going to risk it.)
  20. It was pretty casual - we were there on a Sunday night, in shorts, and didn't feel out of place. Might be asking for trouble on the wait time. There is also bar seating, and a big communal table, which is where they seated us when we came without a reservation at 7 on a Sunday - otherwise it would've been a 25-minute wait.
