  1. I thank you for the phone tip! I take lots of pix with my Android phone and they're never as good as the ones friends take with iPhones. Will try Snapseed out. <Avoiding the 'take food pics at a restaurant' discussion. If using a smartphone to take pics considered the free app Snapseed (iOS or Android). Lots <of nice processing capability (at least to use on a smartphone).
  2. Food at Northside is really, really, really good for a coffeehouse, and pretty darn good for a cafe with a small menu. Highly recommend. They go through cycles when they take something I love off the menu and I'm bummed, but I can say that anything with a housemade cheese is worth trying (used to have a salad w/housemade ricotta that I adored, now it's housemade goat cheese which I like nearly as much). Have not tried the famous egg sandwiches.
  3. I'm a big, big fan of their ginger salad. Whenever I'm in the neighborhood, I stop in and get ginger salad, rice paper roll (fresh and tasty with an excellent dipping sauce), and dessert (which I can't find on the menu, but I think is mango and sticky rice with a good thick coconut sauce to pour over it). Those who like ginger salad should also go to Burma in Chinatown.
  4. We love this place. Have eaten from there less often since they discontinued delivery, but it's a great place to go with kids, we get takeout from there from time to time, and it's always delicious. Will have to try the Egyptian pizza (how spicy is it with the jalapenos, though?).
  5. Yes! or a Devon and Blakey's. I'm going to miss Rabbit's very tasty salads. (for the Courthouse area, while people don't think of Bayou Bakery for salad, I'm extremely fond of their green salad with Cherry Glen goat cheese, apples, and pecans).
  6. I saw this and searched "SodaStream," and responded in the long thread "What Are You Drinking?" which included some discussion -- we've tried a bunch of different brands syrups (haven't made our own, unlikely to do that) so I had some recommendations. But it could definitely use its own thread! maybe "SodaStream and other soda machines," Don?
  7. Saw the SodaStream post (yours, I think) in the Coca-Cola Freestyle thread and thought I'd find where they've been discussed before. We don't use the SodaStream flavors -- they all seem to have Nutrasweet, even the non-diet ones, and we didn't like the taste of any of them. Flavrz (sic) makes some tasty ones, including "tropical" which is mostly peach with some other fruits, and an excellently gingery ginger ale that is now my go-to drink. Before I found that, I was making ginger ale with Whole Foods "ginger soother" (I think it's The Ginger People brand - ginger, a little honey, a little lemon) and a little bit of agave. I can strongly recommend (at a higher price point) the soda syrups from Pittsburgh Soda Pop. My husband and son loved the root beer (several types available) and black cherry, and I love the Mint Ginger Mama. You can get "sample packs," smaller bottles of 3 kinds, and we tried a wide variety of out-there flavors (bananas foster, blood orange, mango, dark chocolate) but the root beer, cherry, and mint ginger were by far our favorites.
  8. Thanks so much, everyone! and more recommendations welcome.
  9. DCDuck, anything you recommend in Charlotte based on your trip last summer?
  10. Since this thread is old, I'm wondering if anyone has new additions to the vegan list. Particularly in DC and at a lower price point (so not Elizabeth's Gone Raw, wonderful though I hear that is). Thanks!!
  11. I was looking for sour grape juice, which I understand is similar but perhaps less expensive. Lebanese Taverna Market said they don't have it. If anyone else knows where to get it, I'd love to know. Otherwise, will try Butcher's Block for verjus. (Mainly, I need a non-alcoholic substitute for wine in cooking - dishes I've made with lemon juice or vinegar instead haven't been great. Though I think this may only substitute for red wine?)
  12. I would avoid the fish there (we found it a bit off when we ordered a swordfish kabob), but otherwise I've been extremely happy with it recently, as always. I just wrote a paean to it in "dining in Clarendon," because the discussion centered on the few places open for lunch and I remembered that it is. It's possible that the things I invariably order there are the things they do best. Though I remember having a soup there once that was good.
  13. Responding on the Amoo's Kabob thread (saying that Kabob Bazaar in Clarendon also has delicious Persian food) reminded me that I was pretty sure it was open for lunch. Website says it is. I recommend the chicken shish kabob, juicy and with lots of well-grilled vegetables, with the zeresh polo which is definitely worth the slight surcharge over regular rice for the flavorful bayberries and saffron. The must-o-kheyer is excellent -- yogurt/cucumber sauce akin to raita but thicker -- which I dip the chewy fresh-baked pita in between bites of kabob. I also get the noon paneer sabzi as a side, from the "vegetarian side dishes" -- fresh basil, cilantro and parsley, chunks of pungent feta, and walnuts, all of which I use to top bites of the kabob meal. That's too much food for one meal for me, so I usually get two meals out of it (especially if I order an extra skewer of grilled vegetables).
  14. It may not be as good as Amoo's (I haven't been to Amoo's, though I will definitely point my McLean friends that way and next time I go over will bring them takeout from there), but I am a big fan of Kabob Bazaar in Clarendon. The zeresh polo (rice with saffron and bayberries) and the fresh pita, thick and chewy, make the dinner for me, but it is one of my favorite takeout places. Excellent juicy chicken kabobs (I think the fish ones might be a little fishy), nicely grilled vegetables, good pungent feta, nice mix of fresh herbs (basil and parsley and cilantro, I think), good must-o-kheyar. I only wish they delivered (since parking in that stretch of Clarendon can be iffy).
  15. We definitely enjoyed it, although the drinks and first course were far more successful than the mains and dessert. We'll go there again. I had two non-alcoholic cocktails, both $3 - the aforementioned San Antone, and the Maryland Blueberries (which also includes blueberry soda). The server was knowledgeable and helpful, and the drinks were delicious. Our bread basket foccacia was very tasty (and warm), as was the olive oil w/pesto served with it gratis. I had the house salad of local mixed greens with chevre, grilled pear, smoked red onions, and herb-cider vinaigrette. Nice greens, delicious cheese and pear, tasty dressing. My husband had the special of curried carrot soup with mussels, and loved it -- 3 mussels, delicious soup that he sopped up every drop of with the bread. Mains: my crabcakes were far too much filler, very little lump (some shredded crab). Tasted more of bread than crab, and I definitely would not order it again. The garlic fries were fine, and the English pea and roasted corn succotash was nice and not overcooked (though heavier on the creamy sauce than I expect from succotash). My husband had the duck breast with tea-poached pear and ginger glaze, and liked it except that it was rarer than he likes (he took the chef's recommendation as conveyed by the server, 'medium rare', but found -- as I often do with medium rare for beef -- that it was much closer to rare). For dessert, we shared the black sesame pear tea cake with candied ginger and coconut gelato. We found the cake unusual and tasty but overly dry (a moist sauce would have been good, especially if it soaked in it a bit -- the gelato didn't moisten it sufficiently), and the gelato full of coconut flavor (and visible shreds of coconut, which I like) but full of ice crystals rather than creamy. Service was friendly and efficient (though the shape of the water pitchers led to several ice spills). The space is nice, and open for lunch (for those talking about places open for lunch in Clarendon).
  16. IOTA is open for lunch and a good lunch choice (a little closer to Court House than Clarendon, but I think it counts). Their sandwich smashers are very tasty, and boy do they know fries.
  17. Oh, good, I hadn't noticed that, Don - thank you for highlighting it! I am definitely interested in this topic.
  18. Has anyone been here lately? Is it still fantastic? Possibly taking a relative here for a significant birthday for lunch, would like to know if it's still a sure thing for a wonderful meal. Thank you very much!!
  19. This in and of itself will make me go try it. I'm always asking for non-alcoholic cocktails and so many places don't have anything.
  20. What do you all recommend from the lunch menu? Heading there with a group today. (At those prices, I wouldn't have suggested it, but one person in the group did, another enthusiastically signed on, and I'm excited to try it. It's a moderately festive occasion.)
  21. I certainly hope Crisp & Juicy doesn't get replaced by a chain - it's our go-to place for rotisserie chicken. So much better than the rotisserie chicken at a supermarket, and the sauces are addictive (especially the creamy pink and creamy yellow sauce -- I usually alternate sauces for each bite because they're both so good). Love their plantains, rice and black beans, and pureed sweet potatoes with a sprinkling of nuts on top. Great for meals w/somewhat picky kids b/c they can just have chicken and we can enjoy all the sides with ours.
  22. Anyone had any delicious savory pumpkin dishes lately? DC and Arlington places especially appreciated. (That is a glorious jack o'lantern above!)
  23. Tea Cellar was excellent - definitely recommended. The food was at a buffet rather than being brought to your table, but they had delicious and interesting food, both savory and sweet. Sorry I didn't remember to post soon after, as I've forgotten the details, but I know they had both food that was both traditional (scones with clotted cream and jam) and nontraditional (unusual sandwiches, gazpacho). The buffet was all you can eat and the price was more reasonable than at most places, I think.
