  1. I wasn't a big fan of Piola the one time we had their pizza. If I remember right, the mushrooms were canned (why bother eating them then?) and the pizza was just OK.
  2. Momoyama at 231 2nd Street NW near the Capitol - tiny, excellent sushi, tempura, etc., and casual. But in terms of quiet, sometimes they are playing loudish rock music - I think that's usually at lunch not dinner (they're much emptier at dinner, crowded at lunch), but not positive.
  3. Pizza delivery in N. Arlington - what do you like? With Listrani's gone, we're a bit stuck when it comes to delivery (my family is happy with Papa John's but I'm not). Plenty of options for takeout or eat-in (Pupatella being the best, Faccia Luna though we haven't been in a long time, Fireworks, etc.), but sometimes you want a delivery option.
  4. Thanks! We'll likely skip the Palace Cafe, then. I made a reservation at August. Reserving Brennan's in March turned out to not be allowed by OpenTable yet (it 'exceeds the maximum date'). If you were going to Commander's Palace, would you go for brunch or dinner? I've only been for brunch.
  5. Anyone had good ones somewhere not listed above? If so, I'll keep it in mind for next year's Hanukkah (or even tonight).
  6. Heading to New Orleans in early April - husband and I will be back for the first time since the mid-90s, teen will be there for the first time. Currently have hotel booked in CBD a few blocks from the Quarter (didn't want to stay in the Quarter unless we found a very quiet spot at the far end - once stayed at Lafitte Guest House and that was nice and quiet - but we wanted to be close by). Hotel is short distance from August and from the Palace Café. Am very pleased to see a bunch of restaurants in the CBD recommended above! Is the Palace Café still good? Have very fond memories of it. But with other great places in the CBD, maybe not worth it? If you were going to one Brennan's restaurant (besides perhaps the Palace Café, if we stay at this hotel), would it be Commander's Palace (which I likewise have fond memories of), the new reopened Brennan's, or another? And how early do you need reservations for August? I got burned in Chicago by not realizing The Girl and the Goat reserved months in advance. Have no specific plans for this vacation yet, so I wasn't planning on making dinner reservations yet, but don't want to miss August. Also will be researching what places for music allow teenagers. Last time we were there, pre-kid, we went to Rampart St. to Donna's and The Funky Butt (both closed now, alas), and had a wonderful time. The kid is not a straight-up jazz fan (Preservation Hall would have slight charms for him), but really liked Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, so I think funk-influenced jazz is the way to go. Husband and I like that very much, but also lower-key music (last time also went to Snug Harbor and heard Ellis and Jason Marsalis). The Marigny sounds like the place to look at, where Snug Harbor is, but don't know if we'd have a hard time getting a cab back to the CBD afterwards.
  7. Me Jana in Arlington is open (opens at 2:30 p.m.), and their food is delicious. Good service and hospitality - we've eaten there on Christmas several times, and are having a late lunch there this year. Yayla Bistro in Falls Church is open Christmas Eve.
  8. If I have the choice of buying a brined or not-brined bird from Whole Foods, which should I get? Hoping to get a Bell & Evans turkey.
  9. This gets my vote too - when I've used the Guide, I've often missed places that are in Multiple Locations, which I figure out later would've been better places to go.
  10. Agree +100. I hope he stays around VA/DC and we get to keep eating his fantastic food. I have been recommending Orso left and right to people for a long time, especially people with younger kids who don't have as many options for eating so well when they bring the kids.
  11. I'm meeting a friend at Central (her choice) for her birthday later this week. Anyone been lately who recommends anything to get or to avoid, given the reports that it's gone downhill? Thanks!
  12. Has anyone eaten here lately? Looking for a special occasion where we'll splurge, but the menu itself isn't exciting me that much. Neither of us drink wine so the apparently great wine list isn't a draw.
  13. Thanks for this! Going to the Folger this week and despairing of dinner choices between the Metro and the theater. La Lomita Dos looks great. May stop afterward to get the kid and myself a toasted marshmallow shake at Good Stuff, but couldn't stomach the thought of eating dinner there.
  14. Iron Gate appears to be tasting-menu only, unless you eat at the bar or on the patio (patio will probably not be open by our anniversary - I'm thinking ahead, it's not very soon). Too bad!
  15. Thanks!! I will look at Iron Gate, the Source, Fiola Mare, and Plume (though wine list isn't relevant for us, but otherwise sounds good).
  16. If we're not looking for tasting menus (so no Komi or CityZen) or French (no Marcel's), are Corduroy and 1789 our best bets for a dinner like this? DC or NoVA, preferably at least a couple plainer items on the menu for DH. Is Vermilion still good? Had a lovely anniversary there a few years ago, but I believe that chef is gone.
  17. Hi all - We're heading to the Poconos soon (Lake Harmony/Big Boulder), and will be driving from NoVa. Any recommendations for lunch near somewhere on the drive between NoVa and the Lake Harmony area? Don't have a set route yet, though looks like we might go via US-15 and I-81. Also, any recommendations for decent food (I don't expect much) in Lake Harmony / Big Boulder or the surrounding areas? We've never been there, I'm told to expect greasy food and not a lot of options. Some healthier/lighter options would be appreciated by a large part of the group, though others in the group will like recs for tasty but less healthy places. Some vegetarians in our group as well. I have found recommendations elsewhere (TripAdvisor) for these places: Piggy's (not for our lighter option) for breakfast or lunch Sunset Green bar and restaurant, at Split Rock resort, for good salads and fish and such Boulder View Tavern, which has some salads and lighter options Edit: we need relatively casual dining options, as there are small children in the group as well. Though I'm guessing most places in the Poconos are fairly casual / child-appropriate. But we're not looking to go to a candlelit fine dining restaurant. (Also, how do I remove a tag? I tagged this with "Delaware Water Gap" because I was told that was on the way and we should stop there, but then I looked and it's further away than Lake Harmony.) Thank you!
  18. I knew the music venue's kitchen had a much smaller menu. I've heard the sushi is actually pretty good, but I only do California rolls or things with cooked shrimp or eel, so would probably go for the crabcake. Blackberry and peach salad with spinach and goat cheese and marcona almonds sounds good to me too.
  19. I read that there will be a Milk Bar, which makes me happy. Tried that for the first time in Toronto and loved the desserts.
  20. May be going to The Hamilton for concert this week - has anyone had the crab cake? I would normally avoid it in a music venue, but since they're a Clyde's restaurant, I'm guessing it will be good.
  21. I like their pad thai and my husband likes their pad see ew. The Ka Klook (spicy coconut rice) is very good, and definitely on the spicy side for me at least. I find their tom ka ghai (chicken/coconut/curry soup) a little too oily and spicy for my taste. It's been a long time, but I used to get their chicken rama -- chicken in a peanut sauce with nicely steamed broccoli on the side. I should get that again. Though the menu now says "mixed vegetables," while online there's a pic with broccoli only. I like their Thai custard with sweet rice a lot (or with mango, in season).
