Do the barstools have backs? If so, I need to go eat at the bar here. That's often the impediment for me.

I can't stand brussels sprouts - yes, I had overcooked ones as I child, but I have tried well-prepared ones several times and I don't like the flavor. Same with beets, though there were some golden beets I tried that I did like. Also kale tastes nasty to me, so I haven't done well with the latest trends and often will see that many otherwise delicious-sounding dishes will not be for me (I like spinach and chard and arugula, can't explain why I haven't been able to like kale despite trying it cooked a number of ways). Thank goodness cauliflower is becoming trendy. The one food that makes me feel ill is caraway seed. I have no idea why, but it makes me nauseated (as opposed to just strong dislike).

But they've raised their prices - now that's chutzpah.

Amsterdam Falafelshop is certainly quick and inexpensive, and close to where you'll be. I also really like IOTA's food, and I think they're fairly quick, and you may hear the band warming up, which is fun. (Caveat - it depends on the time and how crowded they are as to whether they're quick! It occurs to me that during happy hour they may be slammed, in which case, no. I've eaten there with my teen, but at off hours.)

Agree with all 3 of these - I was just about to post Kabob Bazaar. (Get the zeresh polo rice with your kabob.)

Boy, that sounds good. If you were replacing the cheddar (migraine trigger for me) with another cheese, what kind would you think? Gouda, maybe?

Same! Made turkey stock in the Instant Pot (pressure cooker setting), my first time making stock - turkey carcass, sweet onion, 2 carrots, thyme; then strained the broth, and put the cooked carrots through a sieve to enrich the broth, per my grandmother's chicken soup recipe. Then reheated it on the stove a few days later with noodles in it, to cook the noodles in the stock, per the turkey soup in a pressure cooker recipe I had. Ended up with barely four servings of soup (the fourth one was maybe 1/5 soup, 4/5 noodles). Delicious noodles, but not a great way to stretch out the broth.

Chicken Parm Sandwiches
Genevieve replied to darkstar965's topic in Washington DC Restaurants and Dining
That would make my husband so happy, DaveO (and I'd be pretty happy too). He had a craving for one a couple weeks ago and we got one at the Italian Store that he liked a lot. I miss Listrani's precisely for their chicken parm sub. -
And my Hawaiian friend really liked the ones at Hula Girl.

My Hawaiian friend says she definitely recommends it.

Ah, terrific - thanks so much for the helpful response, Pat! I'll try it out in the metal pan (not actually sure whether it's aluminum or something else), and pre-heat it first, and convert the volume.

This cornbread sounds so good! One question - we don't own a cast-iron skillet, is there a reasonable substitute? we have regular skillets that we use stove-top, and we have baking dishes (that are rectangular, not square - I think one glass and one aluminum). We wouldn't use a cast-iron skillet except for this recipe (I need to use lighter-weight pans so I can lift them) so I don't want to buy one.

Thank you, Katya4me!

We are getting an Instant Pot - those who have them, do you have a book or website where you find recipes? I've never used a pressure cooker before. For the slow cooker mode, we have a couple cookbooks (and I think more recipes will get used since the saute-beforehand step will be much easier without a separate pan).

How spicy was the pumpkin curry? I was intrigued by it already, but I don't have tolerance above medium-spicy.

I posted this review to several friends who live nearby, who said they've been meaning to try it and will be sure to go. I'm making plans to go there with one of them - bastilla is one of my favorites and I was glad to see your great review.

Thanks all! I have passed the recommendations on.

Got a relative coming to town for a while who'll be staying and working in D.C. (don't know where yet). In Arlington, I'd recommend Brooklyn Bagel Deli, but where in D.C. proper do you highly recommend bagels these days?

We're going for an occasion this weekend - had a lovely time there last year with very good service and food. Will report back.
