  1. We had the same G Sandwiches on Monday and they were good that night - my chicken parm wasn't overcooked or dry, and my Mom really liked her Italian sub (though I don't know re the mayo).
  2. Thank you! I love ginger salad but am not a fan of tea leaf salad (which I tried at Burma DC). I'll look at the noodle dishes you mentioned, and I'm fond of coconut sauce so I may look at the chicken dish your husband likes. Will have to think about what the teen will get - he usually likes plainer/less sauced food, but beef in brown sauce might be something he'd pick.
  3. Has anyone been here recently? I'll be eating there for the first time for a friend's celebration this weekend. I've only eaten Burmese at the late lamented Burma in DC, where I usually got the ginger salad or shrimp salad and shared a friend's noodle entree (no memory which one).
  4. Clare and Don's has pickle chips too (have only been there a few times since they moved out of Arlington - we were regulars before - but they were always good in the past).
  5. Agreed. Also the Suspiro Limena dessert is really festive-looking and unusual tasting (since you're going for a birthday, figured you might get dessert).
  6. China Chilcano is open for lunch (and I will have to try the Yaki Udon). That Cava Grill is delicious but also jam-packed - I usually go there late or early to avoid the crush. What is Raren Lamen? I can't find anything googling it.
  7. Were these battered soft-shells? (Sandwiches tend to be, but not inevitably, and a salad could have one sauteed. I prefer sauteed to deep-fried.)
  8. I wish more restaurants would grill or saute soft shells. So many places deep-fry them, which to my mind hides the delicate crab meat instead of enhancing it. Glad that Dino is doing it this way.
  9. Obviously not the kind of traditional dim sum I think you were referring to, but China Chilcano serves dim sum at dinner.
  10. Thank you so much! If they'll seat us together at the bar, that's perfect. I found pictures of an upstairs bar that show black padded seats with backs (hooray), and also of a bar with white round stools with no backs, but another picture identifies that as "chef's counter," which I assume is something different? http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/legacy/i/partypictures/01_05_15/carol/6a0115720d4e87970b01a511d60a76970c-800wi.jpg (upstairs bar, barstools with backs) http://www.bonappetit.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/roses-luxury-chefs-counter.jpg (chef's counter? backless stools) There are also these backless seats at a raised counter (left of picture), but maybe that's just a high table downstairs? https://www.lacademie.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Roses-Luxury-Restaurant-Washington-DC.jpg
  11. Thank you, bettyjoan. If we do that, are we at all likely to get seats together at the bar? and do the bar stools have any backrest, or are they just stools? If yes to both, this is a good solution!
  12. Just ate at Buz & Ned's for the first time on Sunday - what terrific ribs! I knew a half-rack would be a lot of food, but I didn't realize how much. And I should've gotten the beans as a side dish, apparently (next time). My husband has been there several times on trips to the area and has brought back their bottled sauce, which is excellent. We use it all the time on chicken from the slow cooker (we don't make ribs or pulled pork at home, but it would of course be excellent on those). We bought two more bottles this time.
  13. My husband was given a gift certificate for dinner at Rose's to celebrate a major accomplishment, and he expressed interest in using it soon. He has a broken toe and can't stand in line for long, and I also would have difficulty standing more than a half hour due to some physical issues. I told him that it's a no-reservations place with lines to wait, but now that I've reviewed the thread I'm reminded that it's often a two-or-more hour wait in line. Is that also true on a weeknight? Are there best times to go to avoid a more than half-hour wait? Has anything changed since Pineapple and Pearls has opened? This is why I have never tried Rose's.....and because I know how hard it is to get parking in Barracks Row (having had that issue at Garrison, but at least we had a reservation there), so we can't just try it on a whim (unless we taxi there and taxi home, but even then, we wouldn't want to come out there by taxi and find we'd timed it terribly). It was an extremely sweet and thoughtful gift, but I think the giver just knew it was one of the best restaurants in town, not about the two hour waits in line. I would hate for the gift to end up causing him stress/annoyance and not be fully enjoyed. Trying to decide whether to look into hiring a line-stander (not something either of us would normally do), or what time one would go over to put your name in at the hostess stand with only a short wait in line and then wait in a bar down the street for two hours (which, if it gets us in at 8 or later, we usually will have needed at least an appetizer by then, and I really don't love that idea as it seems better to go to Rose's fully hungry, but I guess it may be our best option - maybe it'll work if we eat a really late lunch). A 9:30 p.m. dinner would not work for him (as I see above that's a good time to show up) and the experience of eating at a great restaurant would be largely wasted. Thank you for any ideas.
  14. Sounds very intriguing and I want to try it! But wait, it's in the little Hell Burger restaurant at Wilson and N. Quinn? How is there room? (I haven't been there in a long time, maybe it's expanded) Also, you have to forgive anyone who looked at the menu online and thought it was an April Fool's joke: "Inspired by my years in Onhava following the fall of the Soviet Union"”by day working to restore the House of Botkin to the Throne of Zembla"¦and by night hunting the sea-marshes for the rare Crepuscular Bog Orchid, waiting for first dawn to pluck its prized fragrant dark bloom"”I proudly bring to you imaginative tastes from the Estoty and Tartary Cuisines of Zembla, as well as exotic ethnic flavors from its elusive Crypto-Hebraic minority. 15. Very pleased to know there will once again be some good food so close to the KenCen, and even more so that the team from one of my favorite restaurants (Oh, we miss Willow a LOT) has good things planned! Can't wait.
  16. The TVs at each booth made it a favorite of my teen and a group of his friends - they've been there two or three times to watch afternoon games while noshing.
  17. Yes, and in many places, it's hard to avoid having them in their sightline even from the restaurant (when the restaurant and the bar aren't separated). Bigger problem for me is that many moments on TV have light flashes that can be migraine triggers for me, and I wind up having to shield my eyes. My son, on the other hand, is always pleased when there's a TV showing sports.
  18. The one near my office used to regularly have jap chae and an excellent hot-and-sour soup, but doesn't seem to carry either any more (at least on the infrequent times I've gone lately). I miss my quick jap chae fix.
