  1. Funny. I spoke to an owner of another business in the complex and that may not be too far from the truth. Rents have been steadily rising there even though they do not have full occupancy and businesses there have been dropping like flies.
  2. Cross Pho Hot off the list of decent Centreville grub. I stopped by today and they were closed. A new Pho place would be replacing them. Sunrise. Sunset. Also, Des I had not been to Sino's in about 10 years after a bad meal we had there. We got carryout that was not horrible, almost but not quite good. It is notable because I have yet to really have decent Chinese food in Centreville. What was intriguing about Sino's is the menu had a lot of hong kong style items on the menu.
  3. I wouldn't call Red Rock the best mexican out there but it is certainly adequate. In fact, their fried beef tacos are not only bad for you, but quite tasty. The place is much better now that the smoking ban is in place as it is a bar first, and a food establishment second. My family goes there from time to time. None of it is fine cuisine but sometimes the food there can be better than average.
  4. Just paid a visit myself. Called in my order for a gyro sandwich when I left Wegman's in Fairfax. They started making it for me when I got there which was a little annoying because I had a toddler to get to bed. The place was obviously going through some growing pains having just opened and getting the staff trained and it took them a while to make the sandwich. On the bright side, the gyro was excellent and served on fresh baked bread. I also got a side of the chick peas to compare them to the competition. They are a little different than the ones served at Rawal Kabob in Chantilly but my wife and I declared them equally excellent. They had 5 or 6 other sides their that all looked like they were worth trying. I'll be going back in a few weeks hopefully after some of the new restaurant issues die down. Having tried Kabob Express and Virginia Kabob in Centreville I think I like Food Corner better.
  5. Taking a group here on Saturday for a pre-bachelor party dinner. Any dishes we should avoid? Anything we should try? What I am reading here is that the non-steak dishes may be better than the steak dishes and that the side dishes are excellent.
  6. Question for those of you more familiar with Sichuan food than I. I will be going to Sichuan village with a group of people who can't handle spicy food. Can anyone recommend some good and authentic dishes here that aren't spicy?
  7. Surprised that there are no posts here since Rangoli is an excellent restaurant. I got carry out on Sunday. Note to those of you who by the discounted rangoli gift cards from Costco. They are only good for dine in only, oops. As to the food, the Butter Chicken and Palek Paneer are excellent. Probably my favorite in the area (ahead of Minerva). The menu is a little small, but what they do have is good.
  8. It looks like it may have just opened. I checked out the website and a centreville location is not mentioned. That being said, there is a van in front of the building that looks awfully similar to the one on the webste.
  9. The Zpizza and Pancheros are already out of business. Who'd of thought, putting a pizza place in a shopping center with not one, not two, not three but 4 other pizza places may have been a bad idea. We tried the Masala Country on friday because we had a coupon. Maybe I am missing something with indo-chinese fusion cooking but I couldn't have been more dissapointed. We had some chop-suey dish which essentially was an ommlette in a pool of ketchup. We also got the thai fried rice while not horrible, wasn't really good either. The Basmatti rice didn't leand itself well to the preparation. Admitedly we may not have ordered to the strength of the meny but we were in a hurry. My wife is willing to give them another try so we may go back. Is their anything I am missing that we should order there? Also, for decent stripmall indian, Rasoi of India is suprisingly solid. They have replaced Bombay Cafe in Fairfax as my cheap but good indian buffet joint.
  10. Went to Buy Buy Baby today and needed lunch so we got some carryout. My son was under the weather so I just got some safe picks. Roast Pork fried rice (something I use, fairly or not to judge chinese places) and some of the dumplings off the dim sum carts. The fried rice rated a solid 8 out of 10 and there were no leftovers. My wife liked the shrimp dumplings so much that I only got one. The pork ones were only so so. Had I more time I would have ordered a little better but I needed to run i and run out before the boy blew up. All in all I would return, just to try some more of the BBQ meat.
  11. Had a second visit on Saturday. Pleased to say that the food came out a lot quicker. The Lamb Gnochi was still excellent. My Duck and my wife's Roast Chicken were both good. If you live in South Riding and are thinking of going to Ruby Tuesday, hit yourself in the head and come here instead.
  12. When you have two working parents and a toddler at home, sometimes you are forced to get a lot of carry out. This place opened up a few weeks ago and I jumped on the grenade and gave it a try. I ordered the combo that had chicken, beef and seekh kabob. For sides we got the spiced rice, chick peas and spinach. Overall verdict... underwhelming. The seekh kabob and chicken were adequate. The beef kabobs were so tough as to be inedible. The chick peas and spinach were also decidedly average. The price was right but if I was in the area and in need of a kabob fix I would be high-tailing it up to Rawal Kabob in Chantilly.
  13. Bombay cafe used to be one of my favorite indian buffet's but alas with the falling prices, the quality of some of the food has fallen off as well. I haven't been in about 9 months but the last time I was there I was underwhelmed.
  14. FWIW my wife and I went probably a year and a half ago. Its a little hazy due to lack of sleep due to our infants son. I'm fairly certain we walked in after a trip to Babies 'r' Us. I do recall seeing a different set of waitstaff there FWIW. I also recall that one of the waiters did teh mongolian bbq vs. a dedicated chef that they used to have.
  15. I should have posted after we went here for my wife's birthday a few months ago. I took the advice of the board and ignored the Washington post reviews. As we had a toddler in tow we took the first seating and a table in the back near the door to the garden. As other posters mention, the adult libations are uniformly good. I recall having a pan fried skate filet which was excellent. Someone else had some kind of pork roast which I recall being the highlight of the table. Actually, the highlight of the table was the server whose job it is to dole out rolls. My toddler was in love with him because he kept providing him bread. In fact, on the way out of the restaurant he gave him a high five for a job well done.
  16. This place is fairly new. Probably about two years old. Please don't make the mistake of going into Golden China which is a few doors down. A once decent source of Chinese food hasn't been good in years.
  17. I thought that this deserves a thread because it may turn out that there are some culinary finds here. Aside from being a huge supermarket in the old (back in the day) Lowe's space, the Chantilly Lotte has a food court as well. Seeing as I work nearby and can't always go to Sichuan Village I need to branch out. Has anyone else tried it and are there any hidden gems? I've only been to the Japanese stand and have had some decent carry-out.. I've had the katsu udon combination which is a fried pork cutlet and a bowl of udon soup. The soup is actually pretty good and worth having by itself. I've also had their fried rice omelet which was also good. Nothing worth making a special trip for, but worth having if you are there and you are hungry. The Evergreen Sweets stand was supposed to sell some traditional Indian savories (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/20/AR2010042001238.html) but the last time I was by I only saw them selling sweets. Anyone else try getting lunch from here?
  18. My wife and I checked this place out for dinner a few weeks ago. It was a Saturday night, our son was hungry and we were sick to death of Chick-fil-e (aka The Moo Place). We ran in here and only a few tables were full which didn't bode well in our opinion. Thankfully we were wrong. We had an excellent meal that was good from beginning to end. We started with a grilled mahi mahi appetizer which was just excellent. My wife had a seafood Udon soup that lasted us well into the next week. I had some kind of special sushi roll whose name eludes me but was not only visually appealing but tasted good as well. I didn't get confirmation but it seems like the husband and wife owners were waiting the tables and making the sushi so it is a family operation. This place is tucked away in the big shopping center with the Lotte and Lowes. It is located a few doors down from the Babies 'r' Us. Its a bad location but I hope more people find out about it because we had a good meal there (of course, your results may vary).
  19. We had a coupon for this place and went in for dinner with very little expectations. We had actually first tried to go on a Saturday but it was mobbed and you can't do a 30 minute wait with a toddler in tow. Apparently this place is pretty popular with the locals. We tried going again on a Thursday and were pleasantly surprised with our meal. My wife had the hibachi chicken and I had the hibachi fillet mignon. The fillet was surprisingly tender and flavorful. The meal comes with soup, salad, rice, noodles, shrimp, vegetables, desert and your meat. My meal was 22 dollars and I felt like I got my moneys worth. We also had a few rolls of sushi which were good (but not great). Although we did have some special roll that was fried spicy salmon and tuna which actually was darned tasty. I know frying sushi is kind of lame, but this item was good. If you're in the area and want to do the whole Japanese steakhouse experience, you could do worse than Otani. We'll will definitely return. The show at the hibachi was enough to keep our son distracted while we ate our food. On weekdays the restaurant also does a sushi buffet which is solid if that is what you are into.
  20. There is a Velocity 5 now in Centreville in the old Catbo/Austin Grill place. I wonder what restaurant will go there next since I don't think Velocity 5 will be there long. We went for Sunday Brunch yesterday because we had a coupon. For most of our meal we were the only customers there. Well, the only customers if you didn't include the flies which were swarming around us while we tried to eat. When we mentioned that the flies seemed a little excessive the waitress blamed it on the pond that is nearby. Strangely enough we never had fly issues at Catbo or Red Rock (copper Canyon) or Carabbas for that matter. The food was decidedly average but seemed pricey. Two of us got burgers which were completely adequate but did not really justify their $10 + pricetag. The 6 dollar side salad we got seemed excessive as well. Even with a coupon, I doubt we will return.
  21. Tried this over the weekend. Good not great. Highlights were the country fried chicken and the mahi-mahi. The homemade ice cream is also very good. The only real downside was the service which was poor. Having waited tables for 4 years I can tell when a server is in the weeds or they are just inattentive. Our server was just inattentive.
  22. I searched and couldn't find a thread for this place which is a shame because I think they may have some of the best Kabob's in the area. My office goes here all the time and they do a brisk carry-out business. I've been going here for years and I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. It's one of those places where you walk down the hall and say "Anyone want lunch?" and people demure saying that they have leftovers from home. You come back down the hall and you say "Anyone want Kabobs?" and their leftovers go back in the fridge. I'd like to say that I have explored a lot of the menu but I have not. I either get the lamb kabob or the Rawal kabob special (a skewer of chicken and a skewer of seekh kabob). All meals are served with nan, rice, salad and vegetables. I always get the channa masala which is always excellent here. This shopping center really is a culinary mecca. Picante, Minerva, Thai Basil (when it is good, which hasn't been recently) and Rawal Kabob. All in a low rent out of the way strip mall.
  23. This is the kind of place I enjoy writing about and I really hope this place does well. Its located on University Blvd just north of Main Street. Its located in the basement of one of the shops facing main street and I for one am glad I stopped in on Saturday night. After a day's worth of yard work I had no desire to cook and didn't feel like picking anything up from Wegmans so I figured now was the time to check this place out. There are a few tables inside but it is mostly a carry-out business. We had two of the meat pies, which were flaky and just spicy enough to get your attention. Also tried was the ox-tail dish which was good, but a little salty. The highlight of the evening was the brown stew chicken which was very flavorful and moist. Both the ox-tail and chicken were served on rice and peas which looked a lot like red beans and rice. The dishes were also served with stewed plantains which my son loved. I looked forward to bringing the leftover chicken to work for lunch today but was sadly informed that my wife and I beat me to the punch yesterday. Parking is a bit of a chore here but the food is good and the prices are cheap. I am definitely adding this one to the regular rotation.
  24. I was heading off to Harrisonburg the other weekend when I caught a whiff of BBQ smoke from the side of the road. It was early and it appeared as though a BBQ stand had taken up shop at the old restaurant site that was between the battlefield and Gainesville. Fast forward to this weekend as I was returning from another trip to Harrisonburg. Its almost dinner time and I figure I'd give it a try. The verdict? It bears watching. And I will be making a return visit. First off, avoid the sweet tea. I saw it being poured out of an Arizona Ice T jug. Not what I was looking for when buying sweet tea. Second off, try the ribs. They are St. Louis cut and were some of the better ribs I have had in a while (This includes the Pit Stop out in Aldie). The rub they used was sweet and the ribs were still nice and moist. I also tried the BBQ Pork and BBQ Beef Brisket sandwiches which both got mixed reviews. I thought they were only okay but my wife really liked them. I did not try any of their sides. They were out of beans when I got there and I didn't feel like coleslaw. You can view their menu at http://reddysbbqco.com/
