  1. The problem is that the new batter reminded me of Arthur Treachers. The old recipe made Eamonn's someplace I went out of my way for. The last meal I had didn't compare to the fish and chips at Hunter's Head or Ford's Fish Shack.
  2. Taste at Hong Kong also had good hot and sour soup which is one of the ways I judge a chinese restaraunt. El Fresco is adequate. Kind of on par with Anitas which also has its place (breakfast burritos). It may deserve another thread as it is a local chain but Santini's is pretty freakin solid. I find myself eating there a lot.
  3. Funny you should mention this. I eagerly tried out their new location a few months ago and had a similar experience. Fries were still good though.
  4. You guys beat me to the punch. Karaikudi is awesome and needs to be near the top of this list. It is currently my favorite indian place although I have only had the buffet. I also think Thai Basil is too high as well. I took cooking classes there about 10 years ago and pimped that place before it became popular. The problem I am seeing lately is inconsistency. For every 2 good meals I have had there in recent years I have had one bad one My last order of Pad Thai from there was awful. Gloopy and sickeningly sweet. The prior two had been quite good.,,, but that last one.... Taste @ Hong Kong is worth checking out but I think they are closed for repairs.
  5. We went a few weeks ago. Burger was very similar to Smashburger down the road although I liked this one better. I also liked the fries better than Smashburger. We drove all the way to Fairfax for the burgers. As someone who used to spend a few weeks a year in Milwaulkee I can say that while the custard is good, its no better than Milwaukee's Frozen Custard. Cheaper though.
  6. I've never seen anyone at that Thai place.... Being a Centreville resident I thought I'd give props to where I normally eat. Pizza - Ciros is good but for carry out or delivery I prefer Brick's Pizza. The ingredients are always good and it is cheaper than Ciros. They deliver as well so it beats the heck out of Dominos or the other delivery options. Thai - Thai by PK is new and really quite solid. http://www.thaicuisinebypkva.com/ Kabob - If I am not venturing to Chantilly, Food Corner Kabob House is my go to place. Good food, friendly and my kids will eat anything on the menu. Mexican - In the rubble of the old Shade (Shadey Tree) - I've been twice -It has potential Pho Aura - Technically this is Chantilly but for lunch they offer some excellent Ban Minh. Indian Ocean - Opened on Stone Road. Standard Indian cuisine. Very solid.
  7. Welp, there was no info on their site about Ray's the third but I drove by anyways on Saturday for lunch. They were indeed open and they were indeed excellent. The onion strings are fairly awesome and the fact that you can get the crab soup there is even more awesome. I may just get three cups of that next time I go, then swing by the cardiologist on the way back.
  8. I know Rays to the 3rd are open for lunch on the weekdays. How about tomorrow? Thinking of stopping in on my way back from the zoo.
  9. I'm pretty sure this place has changed hands in the last year. There are different people behind the counter and they stopped accepting their Entertainment Coupons. That said, the lamb kabobs have still held up and the place is still in my office's rotation.
  10. So I am in Columbia South Carolina last week enjoying some good local BBQ and thinking to myself, "Damn I miss Ben's" . Fast forward to today when I get an e-mail stating that there is a sign in front of the old Ben's Whole Hog BBQ location that states: "Ben's Whole Hog BBQ is coming back!" If this is true this is potentially huge news. Bad news for my waistline. Good news for the relatively barren BBQ scene in Northern Virginia.
  11. Vintage 51 seems to be doing a lot better lately. They may have found their niche. I've had some solid meals there yesterday. My one visit to Catch 52 was dissapointing. I think the concept was good, the execution was lacking.
  12. I've been twice and agree with OP. I've also recently been to Pho Aura and Pho 98 and confirm that Pho Duong is better.
  13. What do they say about restaurants? Location Location Location. This one sucks. The food on the other hand, doesn't. Between this, Rawal Kabob and Food Corner Kabob house we have entered a golden age in Chantilly/Centreville ethnic cuisine. I've been 4 times so far and have not had a bad meal yet. Especially noteworthy are their excellent redntition of the obligitory chick peas. With the chicken Kabob you can really taste the difference in their marinade. the real star here is the Kahari Chicken which is delicious (granted I have not had it elsewhere but it was damned good). If you beleive Yelp it is owned by Tariq Khan the original owner and founder of Ravi Kabob . I'd verify with the website but it is down right now.
  14. On my way back from a meeting I treated myself to a lunch at HB Too. The burger was excellent of course but the real item of note are the onion rings. These were huge and you really have to share an order of them because there is no way you can finish them yourself.
  15. Catching up on some of my restaurant reviews. This place is.... interesting..... It seems that a family bought the malibu grill and partitioned the place in half. Half the restaurant is the malibu grill, the other half is Cheong Wong, a cantonese restaurant. I've gotten carry out from them twice. Both times were hit and miss. The First time the HK Wonton soup and pork fried rice were excellent but the beef chow foon was only ok. The second time around the spicy pork chop dish and house fried rice were good, but the wanton soup was bland. I'll probably give them another try in a few minutes but that is more of a result of the lack of good chinese food near me (Aside from Sichuan Village of course).
  16. San Vito is indeed open. Now that I've been twice I feel I can probably say something about it. 1st visit was shortly after they opened and they were going through the new restaurant problems. Took forever to place the carry out order, some problems with the pizza oven. Eventually I got out of there with my food. The pizza was ok. The toppings were good but the crust needed to be in the oven a little longer. We also had the Agnolotti which was Rapini & sausage ravioli with aurora sauce, mushrooms & onions. That dish the first time around was excellent. We also tried the mozzerella sticks which were huge. They also give fresh bread with a homemade pesto which is quite good. 2nd time around we got the agnolotti which was not quite as good as last time and Farfalle Alessandro which was only ok (probably just a poor menu choice as opposed to a problem with the preparation). When we went the second time the place was doing a brisk business which was a good sign. I'll be going back (as it is on my way home) and next time I will try and explore the menu a little more.
  17. I've been keeping an eye on this space for a while since the old Scotto's Rigatoni Grill disapeared. I've seen the signs for Aguaymanto for some time but they hadn't opened yet. Last thursday I was cutting through the area on my way to Chipotle (having talked my son out of Chick'fil'e). As I droe by I noticed lights on here and hung a quick left to check it out. I'm glad I did. They opened a few weeks ago. and they did a very good job of remodling space. The staff there was very nice and were especially kind to my rampaging 2 year old. We got carry out, a half a chicken with yuca and Seco con Frijole which was a Beef stew (with cliantro and garlic), beans and rice. Both dishes were quite good although the chicken was a little dry (probably the nature of the beast). Qhile we waited for the food they gave out a small bowl of freshly roasted corn (which was quite good). When the food was ready one of the managers even helped me carry the food to the car (as I was wrangling with the aforementioned 2 year old). Anyways I am glad to have them around as they are on my way home and will likely be a regular addition to the carry out rotation. Edited to add the website: www.aguaymantorestaurant.com
  18. Ok. I was in the bag for the old incarnation of Sam Pan. Sure it was outdated but the food was excellent (although the new sam pan website completely trashes the old business which was an institution back in the day). I have tried the new incarnation twice and have been unimpressed both times. Most recently I went for dim sum. We tried about 7 or 8 dishes. The best of which were the shark fin dumplings and one of the shrimp dumplings. The rest were all mediocre. My son who normally eats anything and everything didn't even have a bite. I have had better dim sum at Canton Cafe or even Fortune. On my previous visit I got a couple carry out items like the Beef in Black Pepper sauce. I may be biased but again I thought Canton Cafe was better. On my way out of town I hit Mediterranean Gourmet for some carryout to reheat for dinner. That food didn't dissapoint....
  19. The sign is up and it looks like they will be open soon. The website has the announcment as well. The menu looks half interesting and seeing as it is on my way home I am half looking forward to trying it.
  20. Indeed, the one in Westfields. Horrible location but it was very solid pizza annd occassionally good pasta. The cheesy breadsticks were always good. Last time I was there I fgured out why. They were deep fried. No wonder they were good. I'll be interested to see what happens with the Argentinian place. Having two young kids and two working parents there is a lot of carry out in the rotation.
  21. Happened to drive by the future Bon Chon location today. Good luck finding parking there.
  22. The people from BBQ Chicken and Beer will be thrilled. Also, Scotto's Riggatoni Grill is closed. It is being replaced by an Argentinian place.
