  1. Ellicott City, Md.: Submitted many times, but never got a reply. Do we have to extremely flattering to be recognised. Just Plain Doe's will not do looks like it. Love your reviews, but have been lately disppointed in not getting any response without a bling. This is maybe my single favorite chat question ever.
  2. Penag is Malaysian, but they will be competing with the nearby Star of Siam. Pan-asian lunchtime spots Nooshi and Signapore Bistro are also a block south on 19th. But considering the lines out of the better lunchtime options in that area it seems like they've got the concentration for it.
  3. Yes, Andale's is consistently good, and I don't think the mezcal hurts that perception.
  4. I'd avoid the mushroom ravioli - dry filling with no mushroom taste. The place is a charmer, though, and it was a nice variety of crostini (anchovy & mozzarella, vegetable, rabbit ragout(?), and a couple others that escape me) for $6.
  5. The space was originally opened as Boccaccio, then Twenty-One Federal, then Ciao Baby Cucina. Perhaps he's thinking of Boccaccio?
  6. It's all about take-out sandwiches from The Cheese Shop.
  7. I would guess that hiring a James Beard award-winner signals some sort of fundamental shift in their focus, and I wouldn't think he'd have accepted the position unless that was part of the deal.

    Happy Hour

Heritage India Dupont (and the above-mentioned Corduroy) both run drink and food specials during happy hour -most restaurants tend to run one or the other. The best plan of attack is Taberna del Alabardero for food (1/2 price tapas from 3-6pm) and then over to Circle Bistro for drinks (1/2 price wines by the glass, beer, and martinis until 8pm)
  9. I believe their pastry chef is still Lizzy Evelyn, who's been turning out better desserts (mmm honey goat cheesecake) for the last couple of years than a good number of more serious restaurants around town.
  10. Stopped by Heritage Dupont today for lunch and was informed that they had Restaurant Week going on - fine, but I wasn't in the mood for three courses when one is normally too much for me to finish there. Figured I'd order some korma as usual. Unfortunately, the host informed me that they were only serving the Restaurant Week menu - WTF!?! I thought the point was to maybe get new customers, not alienate your existing ones. And they still had the normal menu posted outside and no mention of RW...
  11. Since it's based on their Hotel Palomar model in SF (which houses the pretty damn upscale Fifth Floor), it might have a pricier restaurant than their other properties. Considering the location, I guess "Urbana" sounded better than "The Basement".
  12. The Dupont Location's "Curry of the Day" lunch special is, for $10, a great meal every single time. And the service hadn't been so bad the past 5-6 times I've been.
  13. Cairo on 17th St has a great keg selection, though most have to be ordered. They've got a list posted inside of available kegs, though they've not yet added proces for Corsendonk and Rodenbach, which a flier in the window indicates are available.
  14. Oh, I certainly wasn't trying to steer you away! And if it's not to your liking there's always Cafe Saint-Ex a few doors down. Dino might be a little dicey as they've been pretty crowded and the bar is so few seats.
  15. Cafe Atlantico has the best I've tasted in the area, including Habanna Village, Rhumba, etc.
  16. It just wasn't good when I tried it - nor were the homemade chips and salsa. I was in there on Sunday and the AC was going but it was still a bit warm - if you can position yourselves at a table under one of the air registers it should be fine.
  17. You will not like the guacamole. The Tacos Pilar are pretty ideal bar food, the tater tots are crunchy and good, the burger's decent. Haven't had the other things on the (limited) menu. The tap lineup is nice, but I think Saint-Ex's is better right now (the kolsch!).
  18. At this point I'd settle for one place like Alberto's.
  19. As long as they're packed every night they're making more money by not having dessert. If/when the crowds die down it would be good to add a couple options.
  20. Looks like some actual work is going on at Alberto's (after thay've had the same "closed 3-6 weeks for repairs" sign up for the past 4 months), so hopefully they'll soon reclaim their place as my favorite by-the-slice pizza in the area (4am on weekends!).
  21. I ate in the back room the same night night the Chowhound poster had issues and our service was fantastic. The meal lasted 3 hours but I certainly didn't see that as a downside. When I go somewhere that only has tasting menus I expect to make a night out of it. I've had slow service in the cafe before, but it's still been accurate and affable.
