  1. Yesterday's chat is here. I was interested in the post about the downfall of City Lights/Meiwah; I'll add Chen's for the trifecta. I live in the area and have had so much middling Chinese delivery lately it's not even funny. Have any of you heard of the restaurant recommended as an alternative--Peking Gourmet Inn? Or can you recommend any standout dishes at other neighborhood places?
  2. My taste buds can now confirm, first-hand, the fabulousness of this dish. In seven months, when we start the thread on the best dishes of 2006, this deserves an honored position.I also had the preserved tuna as a starter. And it's almost a shame, really, because the tuna is very, very good too, people. Preserved in-house, it's served with greens, roasted grape tomatoes, fava beans, several kinds of olives, and shavings of (I think) aged sheep's milk cheese. Every forkful was delicious, but every combination of elements also hit on a different theme and flavor. Super dish. But alas for the tuna--the raviolini still won the day! The soft pasta and tangy filling, the creamy sauce, the sweet peas offering a bit of resistance, and some baby arugula on top to cut through it all just when you thought you couldn't eat any more... THIS is eating, folks. I look forward to many more future menu death-matches at Notti Bianche.
  3. I was just gifted with a $100 gift card to the (eventual) store. What's a gal to do? BTW, the gifter was informed on purchase of said gift card that the store would be open in June. Woohoo!!
  4. Man, I used to live in that neighborhood. Then I moved out and in moved Hank's, Komi, and now this place. I'm happy for the neighborhood, but ... harumph, just a little.
  5. I flip flop between Duccini's and Alberto's. Alberto's is much, much better, but it's also very expensive, and delivery can take forever.
  6. It's called Luigi's now--decent checked tablecloth Italian with a pretty darn good pizza for dine in. ETA: Whoops. Wrong street. Luigi's is on 19th and M. But still good 'za.
  7. But(t) very comfy barstools, to tie into another thread...
  8. Is that also the chicken shop that's been "coming soon" for quite some time on 18th Street (roundabouts between Blue Fin and San Marco)? Does anyone have info on that outlet?
  9. When I'm in the mood for diviness, I'm a big fan of Toledo, Nanny's, and Stetson's. And Dremo's is one of the few attractions that can get me to leave the city. Do they still have beer pong outside? Incidentally, at Toledo, the food's actually pretty good. Plus, you can get any of their sandwiches with fries, onion rings, half onion rings and half fries, or a salad. The half and half is the idea of the century, I think.
  10. It's really not. Disagreement is dandy--even fun! But stalking and frothing, personal responses have led me, for one, to curtail my time responding here. If I wanted to be harangued by wierdos I'd hang out with my family.
  11. For Mex, it seems you need to wander on over to the Taqueria Distrito Federal thread.
  12. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But this argument is a red herring. I mean, really--is there ANY issue that couldn't be trumped by something more serious? Why worry about dope dealers when people are dying in Darfur? Why worry about ABC licensing when our schools are falling apart? There will always something more important, more worthy, to do. Of course, I think the ban is silly too, but not for that reason. What makes these birds more important than cows and chickens and piggies?
  13. But you've never been to the Tasting Room. I've never been to the Tasting Room either, but is it presumptuous to think we should reserve personal attacks on critics of the Tasting Room for people who have actually eaten there? I agree with this part 100%!!
  14. Is Eve so consistent and transcendent that all its dishes appeal to all its customers at all times?
  15. Thanks for the update, Lizzie. I've been really curious to pop in and give the place a spin. I think I will... Tell me, do you think it would be hard for two to get in on a Friday night without a reservation? Someone's flying in in a few weeks around the dinner hour. I'm not sure we'll make it out anywhere, but wanted a neighborhood option we could just drop into on the off-chance the flight is on time. (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA)
  16. Yes. Not to beat a dead horse, but now that I think of it, even with the brunch buffet (it's serve yourself for pete's sake!), the service was brutal. I wanted to stand up and shout, "I want to order more alcoholic drinks! I want to pad the check! Why won't you let me pay you more? Why???"
  17. I've only been a couple of times for brunch (I have a friend who likes to go there). It is expensive, but as far as brunch buffets go, this one is okay. Stick with the breads, fried chicken, mac n cheese, and catfish fritters, and don't waste the calories on the shrimp pasta.
  18. I also had those tacos last week, and I was impressed by the taste and crispness of the fish. But my taco had beans on it. And I just don't think you should put beans on a fish taco. But I whole-heartedly agree with you--good food, good beer, and good atmosphere. I prefer the chillness early in the week, but if you like a scene, you'll like the Reef on a weekend.
  19. The Washington Post has an online discussion scheduled with Chef Armstrong tomorrow--Tuesday, April 18--at 1:00. Find it HERE!
