  1. Last night: Beef heart and carrot stew. The recipe called for parsnips but I didn't have any. BL1st-grader refused to eat the carrots (carrots can only be eaten when they have been shredded finely in the food processor and added to ground beef entrees.) but liked the meat. I usually just roast the beef heart but then I'm the only one who eats it. This time everyone ate it and Mr. BLB at least pretended to like it. (I also didn't tell the little one what the meat was beyond beef--I didn't spare Mr. BLB's feelings. )
  2. I suggested Station 4 based on geography. Mr. Blb was impressed that other people backed me up.
  3. Nothing like lots of restrictions to hamper you as you try to help someone find a place for a lunch meeting. It needs to be somewhere quiet, ideally with a booth or table set up so two people can sit next to each. It can't be too expensive (so Proof is out...) It has to be on the Metro line in DC, because there isn't a lot of time. Any ideas? I'm out of ideas on this one. Thanks!
  4. I have to confess that since I last posted about this, I actually have started to use Yelp when I travel. Not for the reviews but because I can tell it I'm looking for X cuisine in Y place and it will give me a list. Usually with the websites so I can look at the menus and do more research. For reviews when I'm traveling, I tend to stick to trip advisor. My SIL likes Urbanspoon.
  5. I hadn't been since the renovations to to the Penn Quarter location but found myself in the area at the end of the summer with a "Starving" 6 year old at 2:00 PM. (Never mind that he had eaten enough meatballs 2 hours earlier at my office...) Despiste his mixed feelings about tapas in the past, I offered him a choice between "spanish snacks" or "hunks of cooked meat" (Hill Country). He picked the snacks and in a moment of my own hunger, we ordered the RW menu. We had gazpacho, a tuna salad, garlic shrimp, squid, croquettes and pork loin. He refused to try the shrimp but everything else was a hit and I had to fight for my share. He also loved the flan (which I told him was like panna cotta). It was a great success and the service was quite good. By the time we were done, the Penn Quarter Market was home and he was delighted to go explore there for a bit. I'm going to be broke by the time he's a teenager.
  6. I love Proof. It is just about perfect in my estimation. I would love to try Rogue 24 but it is out of my price range. Seasonal Pantry is never on my radar.
  7. 2013 edition. I realize part of the problem is my family. 2007--Corduroy. Perfect but too far. 2008 and 2009--Tower Oak Lodge. Okay but crowded and hot. Service issues. 2010--Normandie Farm. Lovely food, decent service. The road was "too curvey." 2011 and 2012--Founding Farmers Potomac. Decent food, train wreck service last year. For 2013 the inlaws requested a return to Tower Oak Lodge. At this point I don't care about the food. I just want decent service. That is no farther than Exit 4 on 270 to the South or Exit 16 to the North. And isn't on a curving road. This is the problem with not being a regular anywhere, as highlighted by the recent piece by Frank Bruni. Is there anything out there that works? Thanks!
  8. I wouldn't object to changing the simmering, etc., but I would be sad to see the"to whom are you drinking" changed. Sometimes I just go and read the whole thing from start to finish. The shared joys and sorrows are a bedrock of this community for me.
  9. And a great way to get extra veg into a dish. BL1st grader will not eat a carrot but will watch me whizz a pound , along with onions and summer squash, into whatever ground beef thing we are having that week and eat his body weight. I don't question. I just food process.
  10. Drat. Monday is grandparents day at school and I'm pretty sure we'll be doing in-law stuff all weekend.
  11. Sad to see it go. It was a go-to place for easy business lunches in the late 90s but I don't think I've been there in at least 10 years.
  12. So I was driving through the plaza on Bureau Drive (the one with the really tiny Giant) and noticed there is a new Uzbeck place. I'm not familiar with the cuisine though I noted the Washingtonian reviews one in Virginia this month. Unclear if it is connected to Choyhona in Baltimore. I'm not sure when I can check it out but I'm curious!
  13. Today's oddball question (and I did google a bit but couldn't find it): Does anyone know the address on Melrose where Michel Richard's Citrus was in the 1990s? Thanks!
  14. Yes but the lack of wifi and the fact that I can't even get a phone signal in there keeps me away. (And I'm not one to linger--I usually need 20 to 30 minutes to enjoy my coffee and do a smidge of work.)
  15. Don, I think that is great! I remember asking if it was okay to ask a Philly question in the early, early days of the site. I don't get there much anymore, though someone is getting to be old enough to appreciate the historic sites, but I love the resource. Thanks! Jennifer
  16. This is probably my favorite food truck in the area--the pork belly they are putting out is pretty amazing.
  17. But, but, but... I actually don't mind the Cosi. And their salads aren't bad. And the line is much shorter than at Sweet Green. Really, after working on the Hill for 20+ years, you'd think they might consult with me first...
  18. I had lunch there about a month ago. They were out of half of the menu. Out of the chivito. Out of most of the tapas. I ended up with the shrimp and those were lovely but I'm not likely to go back if the food I want to order isn't available.
  19. I know I have seen them in the past but they aren't a favorite so I can't tell you where. I can tell you my market circuit in the last few years has been Takoma, Dupont, Bethesda Central, Penn Quarter and Crystal City.
