  1. Chicken broth with a ton of real salt. Kombucha. And water.
  2. Blue Smoke has discontinued the fried bologna sandwiches "because they didn't sell well." Ended up with the mexican place a few stalls down--steak burrito for the boy (which he loved) and a lousy box of nachos for me. Since our seats were on the other side of the stadium the boy was a bit peeved that I had dragged him all the way over there when we could have just gotten hotdogs anywhere.... I have to say (and this is from a season ticket holder their first season...), that aside from going to see my beloved Cards, I'm not sure I need to go to Nationals Park again. It just doesn't work for me and somehow the team has lost its "umph" that it had that first magical season. How sad is that I kind of miss RFK, lousy food and all???
  3. Bumping up. Does anyone know if they are doing any markets anymore? I gather the owner was having some health issues and was cutting back. Which is shame because is super nice and makes such good products.
  4. You know it is all cute when your kid starts to like real food. Until you realize he eats more than you do and has more expensive tastes. We have two hours between the end of his school day and choir practice on Tuesdays. I won't battle the traffic home just to turn around and go back out. So we eat out must weeks. He is begging for sushi for dinner. But that gets expensive fast and I honestly don't have any idea where in the Rockville/Bethesda area to go. Thanks for ideas!
  5. Boring, boring, boring. And I even had wine. Ellen was dreadful. We stopped watching with 90 minutes to go because we had started late (had to watch the Amazing Race first) and just couldn't stay up any later. So we will pick it up after Bette sometime today.
  6. Ann Amernick's website is still up. She did our wedding cake and ten years later, people are still talking about it as the only wedding where people went back for seconds on the cake. It was that good. She also did a cake for our first anniversary. And a lightbulb just went off for our 10th anniversary in May...
  7. Bacon. It isn't a snow/ice day if there isn't bacon. The Trader Joe's Bits and Ends is very satisfying. Tomorrow I'm getting more creative with the bacon. I bought actual slices and I'm going to try to shape them into hearts. I also have cinnamon rolls that I'm going to do the same thing with. Followed by heart-shaped fried eggs. (I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be school tomorrow and BL-1st grader is going to be bummed.)
  8. I liked both Nina and Nick but I stopped watching a few weeks ago with no regrets. I nearly quit the show last season and the year before. Absent a compelling DC-based chef, I think I've broken up with Top Chef for good.
  9. For the Gaithersburg branch: Late 2009? Early 2010? I don't remember going more than once or twice and never with BL-1st grader when he was a wee one.
  10. I can't eat the Taza's stone ground. Trader Joe's has a similar but less gritty stone ground that I liked but I've been trying not to buy chocolate.
  11. He looked and sounded exactly like the guy I see on Top Chef. Doing a google image search of brother Klaus, I think it was Wolfgang. But I admit I could be wrong. (And I realize my first post may have sounded like which ever Puck it was, working the host stand. Rather, he was conferring with staff about something but also taking the time to talk to patrons who were leaving, if that makes sense.)
  12. I stopped in to the lounge yesterday and as I was leaving, Wolfgang Puck was standing at the host stand. He smiled warmly and thanked me for stopping in. It took me a minute to remember that the Source is a Wolfgang Puck restaurant.
  13. Last night I had a lovely birthday dinner at CityZen. Solo. I had a perfectly lovely celebration with Mr. BLB and BL-1st grader the night before, but you can't underestimate the power of solo dining to an extreme introvert with my screen name who has yet to finish a book this year. I find the service a wee bit too hovering but that is just me. On the other hand, they clearly listen. So when I asked for no ice in my water, there was never any ice in my water even as it was refilled by multiple staff members during the evening. I did the four course menu--foie gras, scallops, sweetbreads and the souffle. I was deeply impressed by the first three courses. My only nitpick is the dessert course. My server insisted I had to pick when I ordered, which always irritates me because I don't know how hungry I will be by then, or what taste notes will still be lingering. So I picked the souffle and it was over the top sweet to me. It hurt my teeth sweet. Had I ordered at the end of the first 3 courses (and yes, I know the souffle takes time and that is why they wanted to know so far and in advance.) I probably would have done a cheese plate and skipped dessert. Or asked more questions about something that was smaller or portable. This was the second time I celebrated my birthday dinner here and I hope to do it again in a few years after I've saved more pennies.
  14. I have not. We usually hit one while in Daytona or on the ride there or back. Had a terrible time at one in Georgia on the last trip though.
  15. I haven't been thrilled with the food at the Dupont location. The original location was amazing. But I still think that is partially a mid-western girl's longing for hometown food and I appreciate Danny Meyer's presentation of some hometown classics.
  16. We saw an amazing production of it in Stratford in the early to mid 2000s. I thought it was a lot more accessible than some of the other plays--A Winter's Tale, I'm looking at you--and was interested enough to track down other versions of their story.
  17. We haven't gone but heard good things from friends. Their view was that it didn't replace O'Donnell's and was a little loud but solid food. I think I saw a groupon/living social deal there but I didn't scoop it up. Perhaps I should!
  18. My guess: It's written by someone whose first language isn't English. "Mix green salad" instead of mixed green salad. "cream" spinach instead of creamed spinach. Etc...
  19. Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine on their election to the Hall of Fame. (Not that I have anything against Frank Thomas but I'm not an AL person...)
  20. I've been sick with pneumonia since Thanksgiving, making an insanely slow recovery, so we threw money at the problem of Christmas dinner. Unfortunately we didn't make great choices. The Harris-Teeter prepackaged Prime Rib was salty and flabby. The broccoli cheddar rice casserole had no flavor and the sweet potatoes were so sweet my teeth hurt. The mashed potatoes were edible. Most importantly though, BL-1st Grader felt like he was having a special Christmas meal and that was enough. (He also gasped in horror when I said I wasn't making a special Christmas Eve meal but he was appeased by a grass-fed ribeye from Trader Joe's.) For baking we used the Immaculate Baking Company products. The gingerbread spice and chocolate chip cookies based in no time and were a hit with Santa and everyone else in the house. The crescent rolls were the only good part of the dinner last night. Now back to bone broth, kefir and all the other healing foods I can force down so I can finally shake this thing...
  21. Somehow I had missed that Beck was coming to the Kentlands. But I turned left instead of right out of Whole Foods this morning and there was the sign. We discovered O'Donnell's right before it closed and it was the perfect "in-law" dining place. I'm pretty sure they will be appalled by the prices at Beck, and it will be too loud, but goodness I might actually get a good meal in my own hood for a change.
