  1. Bethesda location seems to have closed--windows are papered over and there is a for rent sign in the window. We've been going every few months with the boy to recreate "The Cricket in Times Square" Chinese dinner. Damn...It wasn't perfect but it was SO much better than what you can get out hear in Gaithersburg.
  2. Do consumers really believe organic is safe and good for you? I always view organic as hopefully fewer weird chemicals that might kill me in odd and unusual ways in my 80s.
  3. Mr. BLB still talks about the Wolfgang Puck breakfast pizza we had at LAX on the way to Hawaii in 2006.
  4. Playdate with BL-1st-grader and his BFF today. We had planned on the zoo (and a side of 2Amys) but the 1-3 inches of rain has changed that plan. We are now looking at heading to the Uder-Hazy Center for a few hours of indoor fun. Except that the only on site food is McDonalds. What can we find nearby that is kid friendly? With these two, I'm more concerned about the noise than food. BFF keeps kosher, though the rules are lenient for eating out of the house. As long as I don't give him pork, shellfish, or meat mixed with cheese, we're okay. Thanks!
  5. The parking is extremely limited at the new location. I had missed the announcement that Haskins Farm was stopping their production--very sad that they aren't there anymore. I seem to be breaking farmers this year. I miss having Gunpowder Bison there as well. I'm sure the new vendors are all perfectly lovely but I get a little cranky when they have zero signs indicating who they are. I usually only have half a dozen Tuesday's that I would go each summer but I don't think I'll make the effort again this year.
  6. http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?/topic/5672-moms-organic-market/?hl=%2Bmy+%2Borganic+%2Bmarket
  7. Last season there was a meat/egg vendor called Grassentials. They were based in Potomac. They aren't there this year, their website has vanished and the email address I had is bouncing back. I hate when good farmers/purveyors disappear. Sigh...
  8. To everyone who is daydreaming about winning the Powerball tonight--good luck. To Alan Cumming who gave a masterful, amazing, brilliant performance in MacBeth and To my darling husband for juggling so I could get to NY to see it.
  9. No one ever guessed Porcupine's drink. Overlooking a patio. With less than solid looking furniture. (Which was surely a clue...)
  10. Thank goodness I'm not the only one. Or I'll find myself about to post something, especially about a farmer's market, and discover that I wrote the exact same thing 3, 4, 6 years earlier.
  11. Thanks! I've passed these on to Mr. BLB and I'm letting him make the final decision.
  12. I think I know the answer but I'm typing out loud anyway. We can take a few hours off for lunch on our anniversary next week but we can't stray far. He's in SW, I'm on Capitol Hill. I'm willing to go as far as 15th Street. I was going to suggest Sou'Wester but I remembered that Eric Ziebold is no longer connected to it. Central is an old favorite but is a little loud. If someone else asked me this, I'd say go to Proof. Except that he didn't like Proof. But I'm pretty sure that was immediately after it opened and I've been back several times and loved it. Am I missing someplace obvious or should we just go to Proof? Thanks!
  13. The crab vendor is probably the one who has been at Crystal City since last year. The crab dip is pretty good. I didn't like the crab hummus.
  14. We gave up on the High Line after 36 hours of smiling, visiting, etc. Locande Verde and Gramercy were booked when we called/open tabled so we stuck with the David Burke Kitchen reservation I had made. But I'll definitely keep those in mind for the next trip. 1) We found parking in front of the hotel. A legal and free parking space. I'm not sure I've experienced that before in Manhattan unless I was dining on 10th Avenue. 2) After being seated, they brought over a container of grapes which kept the 6 year old occupied while we decided what to order. 3) The roast suckling pig was tender but seasoned a bit dully. I also had problems cutting it but that was because Mr. BLB had taken away all the sharp knives when we were seated and I was using a butter knife. He liked his eggs benedict. The little guy did not like his burger and I'm not surprised--it was hockey puck-ish even though I had asked that it be cooked to medium. (It also had cheese on it even though it was advertised as a burger rather than a cheeseburger. Had it been me at age six, the tantrum and sadness would have lasted the whole day. He's fortunately more flexible than I was at that age. He's complaint was merely about the quality...) The service was friendly and the water was topped off endlessly. Lots of kids with their moms. It was lovely and a perfect break before driving home.
  15. The Beverly is available at "Club Cool" in Epcot. We tried it, along with all the other international sodas available and I didn't think it was that bad. I wouldn't seek it out but I rarely seek out soda anymore these days.
  16. Sigh. I miss my mother. 28 mother's days have come and gone and I think I miss her more now than before. I don't know if she was much of a cook before I was born, but from the time I was 3, her mother lived with us and did most of the cooking. My mother's contributions were heated cans of Campbell's soup and a mean grilled cheese sandwich. When I was 10 I started to read cookbooks and was in charge of dinner one night a week. But what she really liked was going out to eat. Lunches at Famous-Barr. Breakfast at Miss Hullings. When I was 10 we moved from the suburbs into the city. She scrimped the budget and we tried one new place for lunch every week that summer. She wasn't the "best mom ever" or the world's "most awesome mom." She had me at 40. She worried a lot and let her anxiety overshadow her parenting. But she loved me. Of that I have no doubt. And it sucks every day that she's gone.
  17. Alas, we're locked into breakfast or brunch, though I'm the only one who needs to be pleased by the outcome. Pondering David Burke in Soho...
  18. We have a family committment in the area next weekend. Mr. BLB offered to come back through Manhattan. We could have breakfast/brunch and maybe finally check out the High Line. Except that it is Mother's Day. Isn't every dining establishment going to be a zoo? (We don't dine out typically on any of these type of days.). Ideas? Thanks!
  19. No but you've got the memories and the stories to share with Matt and others. My parents died when I was in high school and it has been really hard for me to talk about them but I try really hard to let BLKindergardner know who they were. But the ache....the ache is there...
  20. I think there is also a disconnect between people who view this as a lifestyle or way of eating and people who haven't done much research but have heard it is a great way to lose weight. Neither Mr. BLB or I have lost that much weight since adopting this way of eating. But his reflux disappeared and seriously, I didn't know how much of my crankiness was connected to grains and sugar. I really believe the mantra from It Starts With Food. Every bite of food you take can either help heal and nourish you or hurt you. The headache after eating a piece of bread isn't worth it anymore. The sugar hangover in the morning isn't worth it anymore.
  21. California Rolls are a gateway sushi. We have been known to employ reverse psychology to assure the kid that he wouldn't like the sushi we're eating until he begs to try it. Of course he's now a more expensive sushi date...
  22. I think we're birthday party free so put me down as a probably, with a likely +1. Will bring something temp stable since we'll be coming from Sunday school... (And please, put me down as a back up for the kefir grains. Mr. BLB tossed mine when I was away...)
