  1. Like the Express Corduroy article, this Express article makes it sound like Co Co Sala is now open. I went there tonight to check it out, and it's NOT open and just has a coming soon sign on it. It's misleading for the article to be talking about the menu and trying the "tarted-up mac and cheese" when the place isn't even open yet.
  2. The Wash Post had an article last fall about restaurant investing that discussed Hudson, Brasserie Beck, and Central.
  3. We were also in Phoenix/Scottsdale about 2 weeks ago visiting a friend. For Sat dinner, we went to Pizzeria Bianco (downtown Phoenix). We got there about 6:20pm, and the hostess said the wait would be about 4 1/2 to 5 hours (for 3 of us). We went to Bar Bianco in the building next door, and we spent some quality time together (that's how I rationalized it for everyone; they were not as gung ho as I was about waiting it out.) We had wine, large green olives (cerignola I think), grilled cheese, and a cheese plate while we waited. After about 3 hrs and 35 mins, we were seated. I had the Sonny Boy pizza which comes with salami and olives. The middle of the pizza sagged a bit from the toppings, but it was a really good pizza. For Sun dinner, we went to Cowboy Ciao (Scottsdale). I had the slow-roasted short ribs, and they surprised me in how good they were. The ribs had a crisped roasted exterior and were very tender inside. The ribs came with a side of dried cherry bbq sauce that I only used every so often because I kept wanting to taste the flavor of the ribs on its own. For dessert I had a bacon cookie, which had some dried fruits in it. The bacon taste was subtle. I also had a taste of my friend's bacon brittle that came with his elvis dessert, which I think was chocolate souffle and banana ice cream, but I was fixated on the bacon brittle. There was definitely a strong bacon flavor in the brittle, in a good way. For Mon pre-dinner, I went to In-N-Out Burger (northern Phoenix). I'd never been to one and wasn't expecting to see any In-N-Out Burgers on my trip so I hadn't done my homework. I just got a cheeseburger and fries. The beef patty was thin and well-done, which makes me wonder what the excitement is. Even if you stack a few of the patties. I know, next time I'll try a double double animal style and see how that is... For Mon dinner, we went to Blue Agave Mexican Cantina (Scottsdale). I had a beef burrito. The food was fine, but nothing special. If you like Frank Lloyd Wright, you could take a tour of Taliesin West in Scottsdale. The tickets are pricey, but it was an interesting tour. This might be too long for an afternoon trip because it's about a 2 hour drive from northern Phoenix, but you could go to Sedona to see the red rocks and/or stop at Montezuma Castle (cliff dwellings) on the way. Right near Montezuma Castle, we stopped at a fry bread/crafts stand on the side of the road run by a Native American woman and her son. He fried the fry bread to order while she was working on a sand painting. We had one fry bread sprinkled with salt and the other with powdered sugar. Both kinds were really good. They did remind us of funnel cakes.
  4. Friday dinner at The Source in DC (downstairs lounge) - pork belly dumplings, general tso's wings Saturday lunch at Hook in Georgetown - cinnamon sugar donut holes, rockfish with roasted potatoes and romesco sauce Saturday dinner at Vaso's Kitchen in Alexandria - Greek appetizer platter (corned beef meatballs, hummus, feta/tomato/pepper dip, pita, grape leaves, feta, tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers with greek dressing, olives, anchovies) and moussaka Sunday lunch at Fontaine Caffe in Alexandria - Parisienne crepe with chicken, ratatouille, and brie Monday lunch at The Bagelry in Silver Spring (near New Hampshire and Randolph) - reuben sandwich and an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese
  5. Java Green Organic Eco Cafe 1020 19th Street, NW (between K and L St) 202-775-8899 Website here Eve Zibart writeup here This place is all vegetarian with sandwiches, wraps, salads, noodle bowls, rice bowls, much of which are Korean. It's also very "green" in its practices (e.g., purchasing 100% wind power and biodegradable serving ware). I had the boolgogi and kimchee rice bowl, which I enjoyed. It came in a bento box with fermented flavorful kimchi, good jobche (or japchae) noodles, fake meat boolgogi, a red (kinda burgundy) tinted rice with what looked like wild rice type grains in it, and Korean hot paste (kochujang) that was thinned out into a sauce. The boolgogi was a pretty good vegetarian version though of course it didn't taste just like the beef version because the seitan gives it a different flavor. I also tried a side of the popcorn chicken -- little chunks of fake chicken – that were good dipped in the hot sauce that came with my bento box. I'd definitely go back.
  6. I noticed no one mentioned Celebrity Delly in Loehmann's Plaza...(dr thread here)
  7. Sat dinner - (Not my choice, got invited by friends) Cafe Asia in Rosslyn. Sushi. Yesterday lunch - the buffet at Woodlands in Langley Park (I see upthread that Spiral Stairs was there Sun.) At one point, a waiter was going around with a tray of small-sized masala dosas and offering them to folks at the tables. However, the smell of burning incense in the restaurant detracted from my enjoyment of lunch.
  8. Don't forget to watch Top Chef Season 4 starting this Wed. (3/12) at 10pm. I'm looking forward to watching the new season!
  9. Maybe the smaller Martin's Party Potato rolls or the bigger Dinner Potato rolls at the grocery store.
  10. ^ The Whole Foods in Clarendon sells Central Coffee Roasters' coffee beans. I bought a bag of their Ethiopian Washed Sidamo (Fair Trade) coffee beans this weekend.
  11. I don't know how they are, and I don't know if they're still on the menu, but Restaurant 3 has this on their website menu at least: "Coffee and Doughnuts Malasada style doughnuts with a chocolate coffee sauce - 6"
  12. There are some reports in the Whole Foods thread. Here are a few -- click, click, and click.
  13. Has anyone tried the Caribbean place at the White Oak Shopping Center, in the general vicinity of Chef Theo's? I don't remember the exact name - it had the words Caribbean and Ice Cream.
  14. (I'm not sure if this should be a new thread or a post in the Cupcakes thread.) I noticed Georgetown Cupcake today. The sign says opening on Feb. 14. It's across from Quick Pita.
  15. A friend likes Let's Dish so I looked at their info and particularly the availability of vegetarian dishes because my husband is vegetarian. It looks like you pay the same price whether you get all meat or all vegetarian or both. I felt I wouldn't be getting my money's worth if I got all vegetarian dishes (since they seem sized for sharing) because it seems the cost of the ingredients for the meat dishes would be higher.
  16. I got the eat me crunchy cereal bowl for Christmas. It works!
  17. I've been to the Mem Sahib in Rockville a few times for their lunch buffet. Most recently, I went last week and there was a salad, samosas, pakora, naan, poori, rice, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, eggplant, chick peas, a lamb curry, a carrot dessert, there might have been rice pudding unless I'm confusing it with another time I was there, and I could be forgetting other dishes. There's a good variety. Nothing was particularly spicy, but it's decent for a buffet. During lunch, they have Bollywood videos going and there's no belly dancer. They also don't wash your hands for lunch as mentioned above for dinner. It's a quick-ish restaurant lunch. The service is friendly, and they're pretty efficient about taking your used buffet plates.
  18. Can you share details at this point about the new Eventide restaurant?
  19. Sounds like tater tots could be the next trend. (I love tater tots!) Chefs take the Humble Tater Tot to the Next Level
  20. I also ordered from Cushman's last year and again this year. I didn't order grapefruit though. Last year I ordered honeybells, honey tangerines, and royal tandora, and this year I ordered honey tangerines and delites.
