  1. Just went to Trinacria on N. Paca Street for the first time and came away quite happy. in many ways it's like a smaller A. Litteri, with slightly better hours, and they offer a selection of cookies either prepackaged or by the pound. We got a selection of these cookies and the rainbow cookie was divine, perfect almond flavor with raspberry, moist and delicious, and my companion looooved the amaretti, which had a wonderful italian flavor and a strong hint of cinnamon too (i love amaretti, but found the cinnamon offputting). we tried two breads, a circular asiago bread, that was just ok, and an excellent rosemary foccacia. and the tre funghi ravioli, from the frozen selection, were great--the filling was strongly flavored mushrooms mixed with a creamy cheese, with a good pasta to filling ratio.
  2. Ventured out to Frederick yesterday for brunch at Firestone's, located on the main drag of Market Street. It's gotten a couple quick mentions in the Dining in Frederick thread, but figured I'd expand on it a bit. I was being a temporary teetotaler yesterday so I didn't bother opening the drink menu, but it appears that it has a reputation of being a good bar. The lounge area was quite nice and there was a decent jazz band playing throughout our meal, which was a nice touch. We started off with crab dip, which was served with two small loaves of bread and some carrots and cucumbers. Despite the sherry, the crab dip wasn't too rich and the large amount of cheese made dipping a bit difficult, but it was good. The eggs benedict was a hit and my grandmother, born and raised in New York City on delis, was quite happy with her hot pastrami sandwich. The meat was quite red and lean and she was pleased with it. I decided to spoil myself and get my once-a-year order of biscuits and gravy, which weighed me down (duh! it's biscuits and gravy!) but hit the spot. It probably wasn't the best item to order on the menu, but it caught my eye while I was in the mood. The burgers looked delicious and our waitress also recommended the Frittata, but nobody in our party went with either option. Their website lists a bunch of awards from OpenTable, Frederick Magazine and Wine Spectator. The bottom line is that it's not going to blow you away like Volt, but if you're in downtown Frederick on a whim and wanted a classier meal it wouldn't be a bad choice at all. I'd be interested in going back for an upscale dinner and a night out if I was in the area and the occasion called for it. ------ http://firestonesrestaurant.com/ Firestone's Culinary Tavern 105 North Market Street Frederick, MD 21701 Hours: tues.- sat. 11am-1:30am sun - 10am-1am closed mondays
  3. A visit to the doctor yesterday gave me an excuse to visit my favorite Vietnamese carryout. Now, it's probably not as good as the places in the Eden Center, but Ba Le is cheap, good, and until we moved in August, was a half mile from my house. The have a dozen sandwich varieties, plus soups, noodles, and rice dishes. Bahn mi are $2.50 each, or 5 for $10. Nothing on the rest of the menu is more than $8.25. My standard order is the combination sandwich (headcheese, pate, & ham with plenty of pickled veg, cilantro, and sliced chilis) and an iced coffee, but I have sampled some of the rice and noodle plates on occasion and been favorably impressed. The grilled lemongrass pork sandwich is also very good. Their decor used to be grim, but they have recently spiffed it up with new tile and more tables, and they now accept credit cards. Ba Le Vietnamese Deli 842-A Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 301-294-7808 (It's conveniently located in the same block as the MoCo liquor store, right across from the Wintergreen shopping center)
  4. Kasha Neam sold Kennedy's Natural Foods to a longtime customer, Karen Sherwood, a couple months ago. It's ironic that I'd been going to Kennedy's for well over ten years, and that Kasha's daughter, Elaine, knew my voice when I called, and even what I was going to order: "Tofu Delight, multi grain, no onions, right?" But as many times as I'd been there, we never even knew each other's names, and they had no idea it was me who had been raving about them for so long. But yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Karen (yes, Kennedy's is now open mid-day on Sundays), and here's the scoop: Karen will be keeping the name "Kennedy's Natural Foods" which has been around for decades. She's also opening Nourish Market on Old Dominion Drive in McLean, near the intersection of Spring Hill Road (this is very close to being Great Falls). Nourish Market will (in addition to being a market) feature grab-and-go fare that's made at Kennedy's, so in essence, she'll have a single-kitchen mini-chain in a few more weeks. At some point in the future, "Nourish Market" will be worked into the Kennedy's Natural Foods signage in Falls Church. The sandwiches (I enjoyed a Chicken Salad, multi-grain, no onions) appear to be fairly close to what they were before, with slight variations on the names. Cheers, Rocks [P.S. Out of deference to both Kasha and Karen, I'm retiring the Kasha's Kitchen thread (retired in italic), and beginning this new one.]
  5. Grape + Bean on S. Royal St. in Old Town Alexandria was recently opened by a local couple in this townhome turned gourmet wine, cheese and coffee shop. And.....they are (exclusively) selling fresh breads made by Nathan at Restaurant Eve. Today, for example, they have rosemary-potato, baguettes, fruit loaves and foccacia. The owner said it's best to call ahead to place an order or reserve a bread if you have something particular in mind or want to make sure you get something before they run out. They are focusing on smaller producer wines and sparkling wines. A wine counter had wines to sample and the main counter had olives, breads and cheeses out to graze on. There is also (what appears to be a unique thing in the area) a Clover coffee machine that they use to brew/make Counter Culture coffee beans. More here.
  6. The Italian Market on South Street is on my must visit list every time I go to Philly. The butchers, sausage shops and all around feel of the place makes me very happy. Very good prices. Very cool people. Better than Eataly (and I like Eataly). Not organic. Atmospheric. Think Rocky. Bring a cooler, you might need it.
  7. Close to where Pepperonata was located, at 12169 Darnestown Road, is the Italian Gourmet Market tucked away in a far corner behind Fuddruckers. They make their own mozzarella, have an extensive selection of wine, and sell gelato. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...-2005Jan11.html
  8. Owner of Cannon's got busted a couple years ago for selling illegally harvested local rockfish. Not sure if current ownership is the same.
  9. Reporting on Le Bledo made me think of it. There is a quick-e-mart type Vietnamese store in Centreville that sells Banh Minh called Park and Shop. It is by the 7-11 on 29 near the bowling alley. The sandwiches are 3.50 and are made on fresh baked bread. Worth a try if you are in need of a snack and you are in the area. In fact, they sell the bread for a quarter a roll in a huge box up front. I've been known to pick up several, an onion, a pepper and some frozen sliced rib eye and make some KILLER cheesesteaks.
  10. Hi All, Any idea where a home cook can source either fresh sea urchin or trays of uni? Also, where the hell do I get decent prices on lobster, considering how cheap it supposedly has become wholesale? Thanks, N.
  11. I walked by and Cathal/Meshelle Armstrong's new food market and it just began construction. The 7,000 sq foot bakery, butchery, wine bar and "studio kitchen" on Washington Street is supposed to open this summer. Missy Frederick has more on it in the Washington Business Journal. They are busy with Virtue Beer & Barley concurrently under construction. Here is the permit that includes a description of the project and some mock-ups.
  12. A new, small, local-sourced market opened up on September 29 at the Rockville Town Center. Dawson's Market is apparently named after the Dawson family, who owned the farmed land under the current structure, though they are an off-shoot of a market in Richmond, VA. It is slightly higher-priced for some things compared to WF (ie. Alden's is $7.29 here), but meats are from farms, they carry Trickling Springs dairy, offer Blue Sky cane sugared soda, local farm apples, etc. I was very happy. The only gimmicky thing they are doing is offering these "Envirocredits" if you walk or bike here. Not sure how it pans but might be helpful for some. Free 1 hour parking in its immediate lot. http://www.dawsonsmarket.com/
  13. Calabria Pork Store on Arthur Avenue in The Bronx...Haven't been, just tasted their product. The step-father of the gf was kind enought to bring me back a whole sweet sopprassata (at least that is what he told me it was). Whatever it is, it is damn good, some of the best cured meat I've had. The thing looks like a mutant sweet potato! My photo: Photo swiped from Yelp (wouldn't normally do this but you must see to believe!):
  14. Mr. MV and I drove to Middleburg over the Labor Day weekend for a nice afternoon trip. The weather was gorgeous and the crowd in town was not bad at all. We had a late lunch at Market Salamander, which I've been wanting to check out for a while now. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It comes dressed with a thin tomato based bbq sauce which is a bit tangy. It's topped with red cabbage coleslaw and served on a warm kaiser roll. I enjoyed every last bit of the juicy tender pork. The red potato salad side was delicious with fresh tarragon. Mr. MV had the crispy chicken BLT and gave it a thumbs up. We split a side of mac and cheese which was a bit boring despite it's creamy goodness. Overall quite a cute place, especially the outdoor seating which allowed us to people watch. 2 sandwiches (with sides) + mac and cheese + 2 soft drinks = under $22
  15. Has anybody else heard that Eatzi's in Rockville has just closed with only 24 hour notice to its employees? Happy Thanksgiving. And others too.
