  1. Hi everyone, One of our favorite wines is the Jean-Louis Chave "Mon Coeur". We can get it from Chelsea Wine Vault in NYC, but have struck out around here. Does anyone know of any wine shops that happen to stock it (or any JL Chave wine, for that matter) in the area? Thanks in advance!
  2. Silver Spring residents Mike Mowery and Mike Diegel have launched Source of the Spring, a news site to fill the void left by the Gazette: http://www.sourceofthespring.com/
  3. For those of you with iPhones, the Michelin Dining Guide app has been updated to include DC:
  4. I haven't had a proper Irish Breakfast in Ireland so I don't really have much of a reference, but I thought what we had at Dead Rabbit was quite good. It definitely served its purpose of keeping me sustained during a full day in NYC!
  5. Wow. I've never been to Bread Furst (I've only been in this area for ~2 years), but I am sure as hell going to visit now.
  6. Dr. Gerres recently appeared on The Hope and Wellness Show, talking all things Podiatry: Listen on the BLIS.fm website, or in iTunes. David Lay
  7. Earlier this year, my friends Ryan Irvine and Stephanie Jansky launched Full Measure Bitters, a Cleveland-based purveyor of small-batch cocktail bitters (and Ohio's first legal bitters company!). They recently finished production on Batch 4 and have had great local success. They just started selling their product on Amazon and I couldn't be happier for them. Until they get approved for Prime, they're offering free shipping to anywhere in the Continental US. It makes for an excellent Old Fashioned; the recipe is on the label.
  8. My friend Will (who owns The Spotted Owl in Cleveland) waxed poetic about Great Wall - he visited a lot when he lived in the area. I'll have to give them a try.
  9. Arepas Pues joined the Downtown Silver Spring dining scene in April, replacing a Quiznos Sub on Fenton Street (next to Sushi Jin). After seeing some online reviews that seemed to show inconsistencies in both food and service, we decided to give them some time to iron out the kinks before we visited for the first time. Today, we gave in and decided to stop in for lunch. We stopped in during the middle of a quite busy lunch service. In addition to several groups and couples dining in, there was quite a bit of takeout orders being picked up. A good sign. Tajadas: Fried sweet plantains with salty cheese Empanada de Carne La de Pernil Arepa (foreground): Roasted pork shoulder, tomato slice, spicy sauce (the spicy sauce!!!) La Safrina Arepa (background): Chicken, mayonnaise, avocado, cheddar cheese - served cold, it was like a delicious chicken salad Sancocho de Cola: Oxtail soup slow-cooked with potatoes, cassava, green plantains, served with rice & avocados. My wife LOVED this - it reminded her of her mission trips to the Dominican Republic while in pre-med! We really enjoyed our lunch, and will definitely frequent them in the future. 10. After our most recent visit to our hometown, 3 places that I can't recommend enough for great drink programs: Society Lounge (Downtown) Porco Lounge and Tiki Room (Ohio City) The Spotted Owl (Tremont) I also (finally) got around to picking up a bottle of Full Measure Bitters, made by a couple of friends of ours. I'm very much looking forward to mixing this into my drinks.
  11. City Paper took note of Chef Ryan Ratino's efforts to change Masa 14's nightclub reputation: "But now, some diners are making new, and unexpected memories, at Masa 14, one of 14th Street’s first nightlife hubs. Instead of typical club grub, they’re delighting in foie gras and black truffles on house brioche, and later, dry-aged dairy cow with chanterelles and huckleberries. These dishes fly out of Chef Ryan Ratino’s kitchen and land with grace—and the occasional liquid nitrogen cloud—in front of diners at the chef’s counter that launched in May. The 26-year-old’s resume includes stints at Michelin-starred Big Apple restaurants Caviar Russe and WD-50, plus a term as executive chef at Virginia’s L’Auberge Provencale." 12. Harpers Ferry (American Civil War, Rafting) - map Recently, Jennifer & I happened upon Bisou Bistro at the Canal House, owned and operated by Chef Kevin Plunkett (formerly of Two Nineteen in Old Town Alexandria). It's a cute Cajun/Creole bistro in the historic Canal House (a stone house from 1790!) in Harpers Ferry, WV. We really enjoyed our visit. I had the Shrimp & Grits as my entree, while Jennifer had the Shrimp & Crab Potage: Shrimp & Grits Shrimp & Crab Potage The menu changes every couple of months based on seasonality and availability of ingredients. While it was BYOB when we visited, they have secured a license and are now serving wine. As of right now, they are open strictly for dinner. Bisou Bistro at the Canal House 1226 W. 14. Dr. Jennifer Gerres, DPM is a Podiatrist at Foot & Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic in Washington, DC and Silver Spring, MD. Full Disclosure: She's also my wife, but in my opinion, her training and experience speaks for itself: --- "Jennifer Gerres, DPM, is a 2010 graduate of the Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Gerres completed a three-year Podiatric Medicine and Surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic in her native Cleveland, Ohio. During residency, Dr. Gerres served as Academics Coordinator, where she organized resident-run, weekly evidence-based medicine lectures concerning pertinent topics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. In addition, she supervised yearly research initiatives, to ensure that each resident published completed research, and that each resident presented at least one poster, lecture or manuscript at a national scientific meeting. Dr. Gerres also served as Adjunct Faculty at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio, where she taught students in Surgical Pharmacology. A published researcher, seasoned presenter and former Jeopardy! contestant, Dr. Gerres combines an empathic, evidence-based approach to patient care." --- She, along with her colleague Dr. Howard Osterman, are Consultant Podiatrists to the Washington Wizards and Mystics basketball teams. On a personal note, she is also a Colon Cancer survivor, which in my opinion gives her added insight into the Patient Experience.
