  1. I don't know if I'd go that far, but I wasn't very impressed when I went earlier this year. Definitely overpriced. I literally can't remember what I ate (and, though my memory ain't what it used to be, I can usually remember tasty restaurant meals even many years after the fact). I seem to recall having a bite of my friend's duck. Just meh overall. Except for the bill! The bill was not meh.
  2. Nooooo! Keep the faith! Signed, a Red Sox fan who kept watching against the Yankees in 2004 ETA a random factoid: Dave Roberts, the Dodgers manager, stole the base that turned that series around for the Red Sox!
  3. This makes me feel better about the 2016 Red Sox postseason, so thank you. I wish I could say I'm all in for the Nats now (I'm a Red Sox fan first, but the Nats are my NL team, though I admit I don't pay a ton of attention since my husband is a bigger baseball fan than I am and doesn't care about them at all), but I can't help but want to see the Cubs win the World Series.
  4. Indeed! My husband and I did the pork and pinot menu (was that summer of 2015??*), which was great. We'd love to do another Grapeseed tasting menu, but babysitter procurement is very infrequent. ETA: No, it was January of this year. For some reason I was associating the evening with warm weather.
  5. Darn, my husband is going to be in Tampa tomorrow and Friday and I was going to make him bring a Cubano back from this place for me. (After all, I brought him barbecue from Jack Stack in Kansas City last week, so it seems only fair.) But I don't see him tracking down a food truck. I think the closest Cubano to me at home is at Cubano's in downtown Silver Spring. I wouldn't call myself a connoisseur (yet), but I think their Cubano is pretty good. My only complaint is that they use pulled pork instead of a slab of roast pork. I'd prefer the slab. Cuba de Ayer isn't that far from us, and I've been meaning to check it out.
  6. Thanks! I didn't know about The Whole Ox. I'm sure we'll stop in there, maybe for dinner provisions. I've been reading about Field and Main with interest, but we'll likely be in Marshall in the mid-afternoon. I'm also not sure if the 2.5-year-old is ready for Field and Main ... or if they're ready for her. :-) Thanks again!
  7. I'm heading back to Brightwood with my husband and 2.5-year-old October 21-23 (hoping to catch some fall foliage this year!) and wondered if there was anything new to recommend. I think we'll hit Red Truck Bakery in Marshall (a bit out of our way but worth it, I'm sure) and Moo Thru on our drive out. I suspect we'll hit Yoder's again since we really enjoyed our visit last year (though I'm not sure if we'll eat there -- even though the sandwiches were good!). We'll probably visit Shawn's Smokehouse BBQ on our way out of town again on Sunday. Which actually doesn't leave all that many more eating opportunities, although I'd be happy to alter our plan for something else recommended. We didn't make it to the Barbecue Exchange last year, but I'd really like to go this year, especially since it's supposed to be a nice drive. Knakals is a possibility. The 2.5-year-old may be able to handle It's About Thyme (but probably not Foti's), but the menu doesn't really grab me. Anyway, if anyone has any new recommendations since last year (or any changes in quality from last year's recommendations) I'd love to know them. Thanks in advance!
  8. I watched it when it was first released, so memories are a bit hazy on details, but I remember being quite disturbed by the treatment of Steven Avery but even more disturbed by the treatment of his nephew, Brendan Dassey, a child with a low IQ, not only by the police but also by his first court-appointed attorney.
  9. Did anyone watch "The Night Of" on HBO? Very dark and depressing but very good (though had some clunky moments). Of course I couldn't really binge watch it because I had to wait for the next episode each week, but I'm guessing all the episodes are available for streaming now on HBO Go.
  10. I've never been to Missouri or Kansas, either. I have a ways to go to get to 50 (I've been to 30 but about to make that 32!). Thanks for the dining feedback!
  11. I just found out that DHS employees (feds, not contractors, at least for now), can get free TSA Pre-Check. You need to opt in while connected to the DHS network. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to include the link to the opt-in site here, so I'd recommend my fellow DHS employees ask around at work if you didn't know about this already. I just opted in in about 5 seconds (no interview -- I'm sure this is based off of security clearances). Hopefully Global Entry is coming as well!
  12. I'm not a beer drinker, but I saw Anton's recommended for steak elsewhere, and it's very close to my hotel, so I'll consider it along with The Majestic. Great tips about Jack Stack. I'll be a solo diner at lunchtime, so hopefully the wait won't be prohibitively long (considering I'll need to be en route to the airport following lunch -- or maybe I'll do Jack Stack the day before so I don't have that constraint), but if it is I'll have options. Thanks again!!
  13. Thank you so much for this! I've spent the last couple of hours doing food research. I haven't made any travel arrangements or thought for more than 30 seconds about the presentation I'll be giving, but I'm trying to maximize my food options! Looks like I'll hopefully have three meals to play with, two lunches and a dinner. I'm thinking Mexican for one lunch (El Camino Real in Kansas City, KS, so I can tick Kansas off as a state I've visited ... it's the important things in life), The Majestic for dinner (I've read great things about the Rieger Hotel, but I've come around to the idea of steak, and apparently The Majestic is known for that; plus they have live jazz), and barbecue for lunch before I fly home. Your post is causing me to reconsider Arthur Bryant's. I'd like to go to Joe's, but Jack Stack would be a lot more convenient and I love burnt ends! The Freight House location is closest to my hotel -- is that where you went? I'm reading about long waits for a table. Was that your experience? This would probably be for an early-ish lunch on a Friday. I'm happy to sit at the bar if necessary. I'm sad to hear about Uber. I assume cabs aren't particularly easy to come by, either. Hopefully I'll have a car (although I'd rather just Uber!).
  14. I helped my friend with the taste testing for her article. Nutraloaf is nasty (but at least presumably filling?).
  15. So many disturbing factoids in that article. They discontinued lunch on weekends?! And on the days they do serve lunch they expect (mostly) grown men to subsist on a sandwich and a bag of chips? Also on the topic of food in prisons, my friend wrote an article for Slate a few years ago about Nutraloaf, which is served by many prisons, asking whether the dish is so disgusting as to make it cruel and unusual punishment and thus a violation of the Eighth Amendment: Taste-Testing Nutraloaf by Arin Greenwood in Slate.
  16. What about Sakana in Dupont Circle? It's been many years (like 10 or 15) since I've been there and I'm no sushi connoisseur anyway, but I figured it deserves consideration.
  17. Looks like I'll be in Kansas City at the end of the month, sadly for just one night. I'm thinking/hoping I'll have a lunch and a dinner to plan. I'm sorry to say I'm not hugely into barbecue, fried chicken, or steak, though I like them all well enough. Assuming Arthur Bryant's on Brooklyn Avenue is still good I'd happily go there for some burnt ends, maybe for lunch on the day I fly home. Any other current recommendations? I'll probably be staying near the convention center. I'm not sure if I'll have a car, but I'd be happy to Uber reasonable distances. I read about Stroud's but think I'd rather seek out great steak rather than great fried chicken ... or something else altogether. Thanks in advance for any recommendations! Also, I found two threads on Kansas City, one for Kansas and one for Missouri. It seems like they should be combined? There are only a few posts in the Kansas City, Missouri, thread, mostly about Arthur Bryant's.
  18. I was just at Victoria Gastro Pub on Sunday and enjoyed my meal. The duck fat fries were tasty as always, and I had the wild boar grilled cheese, also tasty. The other two times I'd eaten there I'd ordered the lobster grilled cheese, which is also tasty but also very rich, and I regretted it afterwards. The wild boar grilled cheese wasn't so rich. We also had a very generous cheese plate with house made pickles and yummy bread. I'm not a beer drinker, but of course they have a huge selection. My only complaint was that the service was pretty slow, especially considering that our party contained a 2-year-old and I was on the way to the airport. But it was Labor Day, so maybe that explains it. I don't recall slow service on my past visits.
  19. I learned this for the first time in law school. Burglary is a crime against property and robbery is a crime against the person. Kind of like smuggling is a crime against a border and trafficking is a crime against a person.
  20. I went to B&J's tonight -- the fried shrimp was delicious! I also loved my server. He was so friendly and nice and steered me away from the pound of shrimp (I told him I had no concept of how many shrimp were in a pound versus a half pound), which I probably could've eaten, but I would've been stuffed to the gills and wouldn't have had room for the banana pudding (also recommended by my server), which was just the sweet ending to the meal that I wanted.
  21. I'm going to be in Brunswick, GA, for 2 nights next week, arriving in Jacksonville around dinner time Monday. I think I'm pretty set for recommendations near Brunswick (definitely hitting up B&J's in Darien!) but was wondering if anyone had any dinner recommendations for my drive from Jacksonville to Brunswick (about an hour north) not too far off I-95. I checked out Amelia Island (The Salty Pelican) on a prior trip and liked it, but as I recall that was a bit of a detour from I-95. I might consider stopping at Amelia Island for lunch on my drive back to Jacksonville on Wednesday, but on Monday I think I'd rather not stray too far from the highway for dinner since I'm going to want to get settled in my hotel. Is anyone familiar with St. Mary's, GA? It seems close to I-95 and they have some seafood restaurants. I'd be more inclined toward seafood than barbecue but would be open to barbecue or any other recommendations as well. Thanks!
  22. I made a special trip there a couple of summers ago (I was on the Eastern Shore and made a detour for ice cream BEFORE lunch -- crazy) and quite enjoyed it.
  23. The Dupont location, contrary to the thread title, is actually in South Dupont. It's almost due south of the Circle (east of 19th Street but west of Connecticut Avenue).
