  1. I've been meaning to visit the UMD dairy for ice cream for years, but I've yet to manage a visit. FYI, they moved to the student union in 2014.
  2. John's Grill was established in 1908 according to their website. My husband and I wandered in there once. We may have just had drinks.
  3. According to my neighborhood listserv, there's a sign posted at Adega saying that due to unforeseen circumstances they would close indefinitely on February 19. And apparently they're closed.
  4. Plus one for the smores dessert except I ate mine all by myself. :-) Also saw him on the floor, although for me it was a Friday night so maybe not so noteworthy.
  5. Looks like they closed late last year to "re-imagine the Artisanal brand" and they'll be reopening soon.
  6. Costco has it, too (at least the one in Wheaton), but only in vanilla. I think they sell it in packs of four pints. I didn't notice the price.
  7. Tom's take. The lagman pictured looks like the lagman I ate in Beijing back in the day, except that the lagman I ate was always made with cuminy lamb. I'm anxious to try this place.
  8. I made chocolate chip banana bread over the weekend. I thought it would be a fun project to do with my toddler, but she wasn't really interested aside from eating the chocolate chips. I defrosted overripe bananas from the freezer. The recipe didn't specify how many chocolate chips to use (it said to use as many as you want). I used 2 cups, which was too much. The chocolate flavor overwhelmed the banana flavor. The bread was still tasty, but next time I'll try cutting the chocolate chips down to 1.5 cups.
  9. Really enjoyed "The Crown" and can't wait for more episodes. Just started "The Man in the High Castle." Not sold yet but will continue on given all the good reviews from professionals and friends.
  10. And WMATA is opening early and running extra trains after all: https://www.wmata.com/about/news/Womens-March-Service.cfm I'm still staying home. :-)
  11. Here's an article from Washingtonian mentioning Woolly Mammoth and many others.
  12. Interesting. I haven't been to Guapo's in many, many years (like 10+) and never think of it. I'll have to plan a return trip. I assume it's not nearly as much of a mob scene as Chuy's.
  13. I ate there within a couple of years of when they opened, and it wasn't a tasting menu. I think there were two or three options for each course, plus they brought lots of extra little plates between courses. I remember a lot of raw fish on the extra little plates. For my main course I had insanely delicious goat that was served in a portion for two. I think that was the first time I'd ever had goat -- what an introduction. I remember the goat 10+ years later. I remember thinking it was more expensive than most places at the time but not insanely expensive. It was already hard to get a reservation. Sadly I haven't been back, although I lived a block away for 13 years and used to see Johnny Monis at CVS. :-)
  14. I can vouch for the beauty of Early Mountain. It's also not far off the beaten path (Route 29). I can't really speak to the wine since it's been a couple of years, but I recall enjoying it.
  15. (ETA this was the Rockville location.) Nothing great but in terms of Tex-Mex in this area pretty good. Definitely better than Mi Rancho in Silver Spring, which is where we usually go. (The main draw to Mi Rancho is the huge patio and the fact that it's 10 minutes from our house.) I visited the original Chuy's in Austin in 2014 and didn't think it was anything super special, either. Our service was perfectly fine. The place was mobbed just before 6pm on a Saturday with tons of small children (including my 2-year-old). Noisy and chaotic. I felt sorry for the servers, but they were all pleasant and hustling. At least a couple of people who I assume were manager types swung by and asked us if everything was OK. They kept the light, crispy, freshly made tortilla chips coming. We ordered queso, which I think they're known for, and it was quite tasty, although I'm a sucker for melted cheesy goodness. I think they're also known for their creamy jalapeno sauce, which I've heard Texans rave about, so we ordered some of that, too (not sure if it was complementary or not). I didn't see what was so great about it -- it basically tasted like ranch dressing. I had the chicken flautas, which were listed as a house specialty and which I'm pretty sure I also had in Austin. They were fine but nothing special. I'm no flauta expert, but I thought they could have been more delicately fried. The chicken was well seasoned and flavorful. My husband had steak fajitas, which he orders whenever they're available. He really liked them. The accompanying molcajete with fixings was impressive. I had sangria, which I enjoyed, and my husband had the 18 ounce margarita that SilverBullitt had, and we also wondered whether it was 18 ounces. He liked it, though. We purposely got there early because we read about the big crowds. We only had to wait a few minutes (before 6pm!). I'd certainly not be willing wait much longer than that, but I do suspect we'll be back at an off hour.
  16. I somehow became a part of the Local Guides community on Google. Basically you provide Google with information about businesses with which you're familiar. I'm sure you can also notify them of a missing business. After I visit a place I get a request via a notification on my phone to answer questions about the place (is there a wheelchair accessible entrance? are they open for breakfast? do they have a full bar?). Some of the questions are more subjective than others (do they have an excellent wine program?). The more you participate the more "benefits" you unlock. You can also upload photos that will appear with their Google Places listing. I took photos at Husk and Hominy Grill in Charleston that have hundreds or maybe by now thousands of views. I haven't participated in the community too much, but sometimes it comes in handy when I need to procrastinate. :-)
  17. I just watched "The OA" on Netflix. I'm usually turned off by anything along the lines of sci fi or fantasy, but I was pretty enthralled. Now I'm a few episodes into "The Crown," also on Netflix, which is excellent. Historical dramas are much more in my wheelhouse.
  18. I went to Steffen's the last time I was in SE Georgia in September based on this recommendation -- thank you! I agree with the quirky down home southern diner description. I enjoyed my fried pickles and patty melt. Because I love biscuits I also ordered a side thinking they'd be amazing, but I ended up being disappointed that they were very dense and hockey puck-esque. Still worth the detour maybe 10 minutes off I-95.
  19. I couldn't deal with long lines in 90 degree and humid heat when I was in Austin a couple of years ago. I got carry out from Stiles Switch and quite enjoyed it. They were named one of maybe 20 best barbecue places in Austin by some local publication for whatever that's worth.
