  1. I also saw this when it came out, so I'm not going to be able to back this opinion up with abundant detail because I haven't seen it since, but I remember finding it hokey and very on the nose at least in spots. I often find this with Eastwood-directed films. I don't understand all the accolades for his directing or especially for his acting. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch "Gran Torino" yet ("Get off my lawn.").
  2. I've attended several enjoyable group work lunches at the Chinatown location. They have a party menu where for $28 per person they'll bring you unlimited huge platters of a set list of tapas. The amount of food is ridiculous, and at least when I went (admittedly it's been a couple of years now) they were happy to have us take leftovers home. I ate so much I wasn't hungry for dinner and also took home enough food for my husband to make a meal out of. Admittedly it's no Jaleo or Amada, but for us government schlubs who have limited group work lunch options (no one's treating us to Jaleo for lunch*), La Tasca serves a purpose. And the food is not awful and is maybe even fine. *Granted one could get out of Jaleo at lunch for around $28 with no alcohol (which we're not having at government work lunches anyway), but La Tasca's flat price always seemed much simpler and the amount of food always seemed much more celebratory. But then I'm a glutton.
  3. Same. I haven't seen it in 20+ years, but I DESPISED that movie, which has unfortunately also led me to despise Tom Hanks, who seems to be a lovely person (but who mostly plays the same everyman character over and over except for his character in "Philadelphia"*). 1995 was the year I realized the Oscars are a farce, because "Forrest Gump" won over "Pulp Fiction" (I was in college at the time). It's been a very long time since I've seen "Pulp Fiction," too, so maybe it's not as good as I remember, but at least it's not totally conventional and mainstream like "Forrest Gump." (That being said, @DanielK's comment is making me wonder if I should rewatch it.) *I've seen very few movies in the last 3 years, so if Tom Hanks has taken some edgier roles in that time please forgive me.
  4. Here's an existing thread on Mission BBQ.
  5. How awful, especially given her profession and the fact that she's mom to a toddler.
  6. I recently bought my first spaghetti squash and would be interested in any other tasty recipes anyone can share. I made a spaghetti squash gratin recipe with the one I bought and found it to be so-so (and I LOVE cheese).
  7. This place was on my to eat list for the couple of years I lived in Anne Arundel County, but I never made it. Some day I'll make the drive from Silver Spring!
  8. An update from an e-mail I received: Trattoria Da Lina, Takoma Park's newest restaurant, opened quietly this past weekend and will be open again to the public starting Wednesday, March 29th for dinner at 5:00pm. Diners will enjoy the rustic dining room complete with high ceilings, soft lighting and wood and brick accents. The open kitchen is view-able from the 55 seat dining room and future outdoor seating is planned. Owner Marcello Minna offers Italian dishes using the freshest ingredients. The menu starts off with antipasti including salads, calamari, octopus and meatballs. Main dishes range from traditional favorites like spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna and chicken Marsala to innovative pasta options and others prepared with lamb chops and branzino. There is a carefully selected wine list with choices by the glass. Authentic desserts like tiramisu and pannacotta are available to complete the dining experience. Trattoria Da Lina is located 3 blocks from the Takoma Metro station on Metro's Red Line and parking is available next door to the restaurant. Trattoria Da Lina 7000 Carroll Ave Takoma Park, MD 20912 Hours: Tuesday-Sunday: 5:00pm-10:00pm Sundays: 10:00am-3:00pm and 5:00pm-10:00pm
  9. Went last night for a friend's birthday dinner. Very loud. I liked our server, although she disappeared for awhile between dessert and the check. Generous pours of wine. The schnitzel mentioned several times above is no longer on the menu, nor is the steak with bearnaise sauce (praised in many online reviews), which disappointed my friend (although our server offered to see if the kitchen could still make it). I had the braised clams as my entree. I enjoyed them, but the broth they were served in, while tasty, was very, very salty. I left most of the fennel in the bowl, as it was just kind of floppy, pale, and flavorless. (Is that just how fennel is?) The trumpet mushrooms in the trumpet mushroom appetizer were very rubbery. (Is that just how trumpet mushrooms are?) The three of us tried a bunch of other things on the menu (potato chips, deviled eggs, burrata, smoked trout, burger, Brussels sprouts, creme brulee, sundae -- we're pigs :-)). I enjoyed my bites of all of those items, although the Brussels sprouts, which were supposedly prepared with fish sauce caramel, just tasted like run of the mill roasted Brussels sprouts with pomegranate. I thought portions overall were quite generous, especially the first courses. I wish the divine strawberry shortcake mentioned above had been in season.
  10. Was going to post that earlier but then wondered about the "moderately priced" part. The Classics is great, though, and they do have the bistro special, which could keep costs down.
  11. Per the Googles this placed closed, seemingly in April 2016. Many recent one-star reviews on Yelp (I tend to put more stock in one-star Yelp reviews than 5-star Yelp reviews) and a reference to an experiment with a Caribbean menu. Wonder what happened. Side note: I had a hard time finding this thread. It's not in the Maryland Dining Guide (ETA: it's in the Baltimore Dining Guide under North Laurel and Scaggsville, but Laurel is in the Maryland Dining Guide), and I couldn't find it via various searches. I eventually found a link to it in the Dining in Beltsville and Laurel thread.

  13. I'm fascinated to read this since I lived a few blocks away for 13 years but never knew anyone who'd actually been inside much less eaten there.
  14. I noticed a not yet open storefront at 1st and K, NE, today, and when I checked their website I saw they're opening four new locations: Atlas District (625 H Street, NE) NoMa (111 K Street, NE) Tenleytown (4235 Wisconsin Avenue, NW) Bethesda (Wildwood Shopping Center) Although I keep noticing locations soon to open, I've yet to actually eat at this place.
  15. Looks like this place opened as Methi Indian and Nepalese Cuisine earlier this year. I haven't checked it out yet.
