  1. Hey, I've been there. I've only been to Oregon once. Most of the visit was in Portland, but we also did (way too short) day trips to the Willamette Valley and Astoria and Cannon Beach. I'm not a beer drinker, but I remember enjoying fried oysters for lunch. I can't remember what my husband had, but I know he liked it, too, including the beer. He bought a t-shirt.
  2. Yes, but you're only supposed to cut up grapes for very young children, not all children who could be ordering from the children's menu. I didn't even know that grapes were a choking hazard for young children until I had a kid, so I'm not sure I'd expect restaurant staff to know for whom they need to cut grapes and for whom they don't ... and to know how to cut them (length wise).
  3. Apparently Todd Fisher, Debbie's son and Carrie's brother, told the Associated Press that his mother said "I want to be with Carrie" shortly before her death. So, so sad. Also loved reading about the story behind this photo of a young Carrie watching Debbie perform.
  4. The characters for the two dialects are the same, so it would probably be slightly less complicated than you're expecting. Sorry -- off topic. I haven't had the soup.
  5. I didn't report back, but I had this special, too, and totally agree with this assessment (no expert on posole but delicious!). I also tried some of the barbacoa from my husband's tacos, and it was smoky and delicious. And the hush puppies were as amazing as I remembered from last year.
  6. There's also Squire's Rock Creek Chophouse in Wheaton. I believe it's owned by the Limerick Pub people. I only went once and wasn't in the mood for steak so ordered something else.
  7. There have been so many times that I've swiped away something from in front of my 2-year-old in a restaurant. A lot of times the item isn't even dangerous, but I don't want her to get syrup or ketchup all over herself, for example. That's the parent's responsibility. Swipe the grapes, cut them up, put them back. And Tom likes the plan of the 10-person birthday dinner at Red Hen? Are they way less busy these days? I guess maybe if you try early enough you could get a reservation for 10, but that place is pretty small.
  8. I graduated in 1995. Any other Wesleyan grads here? Like 20 or so other institutions of higher education in the United States, Wesleyan University was named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesleyan University is now secular and is not affiliated with any of the other Wesleyans around the country. Or with Wellesley. :-) Wesleyan is one of the top schools in the country for the study of ethnomusicology. Wesleyan also has a strong film studies program that has resulted in a "Wesleyan Mafia" in Hollywood. Wesleyan enrolls about 3000 undergraduates and postgraduates. Famous alumni include Lin-Manual Miranda, Bill Belichick, Matthew Weiner, and Joss Whedon.
  9. Better than expected. :-) She lost interest toward the end, which was fine with me because at that point I just wanted to get the cookies done. The worst part was when she stuck her hands into egg yolks and flour. She had fun dumping ingredients into the bowl, though. And the cookies came out pretty well. :-)
  10. Figured. Oh, well. I'm going to be at a party out there and am picking up dinner to bring home to my husband and daughter in Silver Spring. Some day I'll have to eat in so I can enjoy the fried shrimp!
  11. I'm going to be back out in Fairfax tomorrow not far from ABC Canteen and am planning to pick up dinner again. I was thinking about the posole, but I don't see it on their menu online. Is it a special? If so, is it often or rarely available? Any other recent tips since it's been almost exactly a year since I ate there? Thanks in advance!
  12. Yes! I'm going to make these. I'm going to attempt to enlist the assistance of my 2.5-year-old. Wish me luck. :-)
  13. Totally agree. I don't usually bother with coffee in a restaurant, even with dessert, but this coffee service was delightful. Also just have to say I'm seething with jealousy that you're going to Kinship tonight.
  14. Total blast from the past. I used to work in Bailey's Crossroads, and I and my work colleagues loved the lunch buffet at Raaga. This was 10+ years ago. We'd always try to go when they had "CTM" (chicken tikka masala) on the buffet, but I liked all the usual buffet options. It was usually mobbed at lunchtime. I had to go back to Bailey's for a work obligation a couple of years ago and made a special effort to meet a couple of former work colleagues for lunch at Raaga. I don't remember that the buffet was any different than all those years ago. The servers were always really nice, too. When I was a regular back in the day they would remember me when I would visit. Now I'm craving Indian food.
  15. I'm only in RI a couple of times a year, and lately my food explorations have been hindered by a toddler. Last year I enjoyed Cook and Brown Public House on the East Side of Providence (near Brown University), and a couple of years ago I enjoyed Mill's Tavern, which I think is in what would be considered Downtown Providence (North Main Street). Julian's on Federal Hill in Providence is a funky place known for brunch, although I've only been there for dinner. Federal Hill (the Italian neighborhood of Providence) has tons of Italian restaurants, but I don't know which ones are good and which aren't. Al Forno (in Fox Point, Providence) is known for grilled pizza, which I think is a Rhode Island thing. I've been there but not in years, and I sadly haven't had the pizza. Oberlin in Downtown Providence was recently named the seventh best new restaurant in America by Bon Appetit. I haven't been. I think it's currently a no reservations long waits situation. If you don't mind a drive to the beach, Matunuck Oyster Bar (in East Matunuck, South Kingston) is very popular. They harvest oysters from a pond right next to the restaurant (among other nearby locations). I visited for the first time recently and enjoyed my oyster-heavy meal, including raw oysters (I'm very much a raw oyster neophyte, though) and oyster stew. They don't take reservations in the summer and crowds are insane, but they do take them in the winter. There are tons of clam shacks in that general vicinity, too (Aunt Carrie's, Iggy's, George's, Champlin's). You could have a classic shore dinner. There's a Connecticut and Rhode Island thread that you might find helpful. If you do go exploring please report back!
  16. I studied in China for 6 months in 1993 and used to frequent what the foreigners called Uyghurville in Beijing for Uyghur food. 20+ (!) years later I don't remember too many details, but I do remember a lot of lamb. I'm surprised there's not a lamb section of the menu (but there are some lamb dishes). Nevertheless, I'm very excited to try this place!
  17. Because of the Top Chef connection, I think Shaw Bijou got/gets a lot more buzz in the Yelp-focused world than Metier. Totally just hypothesizing here.
  18. I suspect the first as well. There's a large segment of the population that would be all over Yelp bragging to their friends that they went ... if they went. They'd either brag about their glorious experience or revel in shredding the place to pieces.
