  1. Sushi Taro Omakase Dinner. One of the best meals I have had in the last decade. (and the perfect choice if money is no object )
  2. After spending the day kayaking in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, we stopped in at Max's Stone Fired Pizza for a bit of sustenance. It is located somewhere around mile Marker 5 and in Kitty Hawk and should be avoided at all fucking costs. A hot pocket at the Kwik Mart, eaten raw, would be more satisfying. "Max" must be the brother of Joe Corbi. This place blows.
  3. $50 is a giant middle finger to, perhaps, some of your most discerning guests. I've been to plenty of dinners where we have brought a bunch of wine and also BOUGHT a bunch of wine. The bell curve on people who BYOW to a restaurant is a big fat phallus: 5% who want to get off on the cheap, 5% who are just insufferable wine pricks, and 90% rising up from the middle, that generally want to drink their good wine, AND yours! $50? Never in a million years.
  4. I placed a relatively large carry-out order today as a treat to some of my co-workers. Halfway to the restaurant, I received a call that my 6 year old hit her head and was being taken to Inova Fairfax. I made a detour to the hospital, and en route told Bangkok Golden that I would NOT be picking up my food. I asked them to take my CC number and charge me. "We cannot charge you if you did not get your food". I persisted, explaining that the food was ready (it was) and that I was more than happy to pay. After much protestation, they toom my credit card number. Half an hour later, they called me on my cell phone and informed me that they would only charge me half-price, because I did not get the food and this would cover their expenses. I again reiterated that I would be happy to pay for it all. They said no, and expressed hope that everything would be OK with my daughter. Good for you, Bangkok Golden. I loved you before, and will attempt to share this act of kindness with as many people as possible. ETA - A few minutes after posting this, they called me again to inform me that they did not charge my card AT ALL, that they appreciated my business, and wished me well.
  5. My wife just got back from a whirlwind weekend in Charleston. Ate at Husk and F.I.G. , among others. She enjoyed Husk, and found the food very interesting and unique. She was blown away by F.I.G. and said that it was one of the best meals she has ever eaten, eclipsing, in her mind, a 2009 dinner at Komi. "Not as sublime an experience as Komi, but with better food."
  6. It's been almost 6 months since I have had my first and only Sushi Taro omakase dinner....it has improved with age. Although Nobu was in the kitchen on the night of our dinner, all of our dishes were created by Masaya. I cannot recall ever having a meal that so amazed me, and I am not sure I'll ever have a meal that special again. If you can go, GO.
  7. If I was 21-23 I'd be there all of the time, and would actively try to be "The King". Sounds like a quirky/fun place with cheap drinks- not too many places like that in Downtown. But I am old, so I'll never set foot in there.
  8. I went for a salad. The Knife + Fork Pork Sandwich was the special, so I got that instead. Different from the last time I had it, with a cilantro dressing instead of fresh cilantro (which I would have preferred) and a different, more pedestrian slice of ham. There was a subtle amount of heat to the sandwich, but I could not detect its origin through all the runny egg and mess. The pork was fried perfectly. Despite these nitpicks, this is the greatest sandwich I've ever had. It's not even close.
  9. Was not in City of Fairfax, but I believet the Meal Tax there is an additional 4%, bringing it to 9% total. I believe Vienna is 3%. I am sure the restaurant I ate in that the tax rate is 5%, as there are plenty of other restaurants in the immediate vicinity and my wife is a good receipt keeper. So, after checking the internet for tax rates, I found adjacent restaurant receipts charging the "correct" tax. This is far from an industry problem and I've never seen this before. But there are such varying rates in local that the opportunity does exist for unscrupulous people. The only reason that I have not posted the restaurants name was (a) I wanted to hear from them and ( I could be wrong.
  10. I had to check, and the area I was in (Fairfax) was 5%
  11. Although this post is not about tax delinquencies, it is in the same vein. Last evening, I ate at a small, very casual restaurant with my children in Northern Virginia. We ordered just a couple of items and I was surprised by the overall cost. Not shocked, mind you, just surprised. As we finished our meal I glanced at my receipt, when something jumped out at me. The tax on my bill was 10%, and furthermore, the rounding was incorrect as well, rounding up a penny when it should have been down a penny. The total amount I was overcharged was slightly less than a $1. I doubt anyone would notice, and I only noticed by accident. But this was no accident. Tax rates in a POS are entered by the proprietor, and can easily be changed on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. They can be changed to the 1/100th of a percent. Any monies collected above the tax rate is pure profit for the proprietor. I have contacted the restaurant this morning and am affording them the opportunity to correct it. It is possible that a new manager accidentally changed the tax rate, but I doubt that. Shameful.
  12. At the risk of seeming like a complete shill.......today's special Pork + Fork Sandwich was a completely ridiculous hodgepodge of random shit piled on a bun that was the most delicious trainwreck of a sandwich I've ever had spill out all over my shirt and tie. Fried pork (ala schnitzel), thick cut ham, caramelized onions, some kind of soft gooey cheese, tomatoes, black bean spread, piles of fresh cilantro, heaped onto a grilled ciabatta roll. And just for the hell of it, let's throw a perfectly cooked, sunny side up egg on there as well. Presto! Mad. Scientist. Genius. $9.75
  13. Although I disagree with PJ Clarks, and I have not been to Bar Pilar in years so cannot judge its relative hotness (maybe too hot for me?), this is a good list.
  14. Although I have not tried any of the sweets, I have had the Garden Salad, Salad Nicoise, Corned Beef Brisket, the Porky Pig, the Duck Reuben and today's Muffaletta, along with an assortment of sides. There's no better sandwich/salad shop in DC.
  15. I believe too many restaurants have opened up to possibly all flourish. Winter is coming.
  16. Restauranteurs comping other chef/restauranteurs/bartenders has really become commonplace in this town and frankly, I'm not sure how it ever got started. In other cities in which I've ran restaurants, I was always afforded professional courtesies the "regular" dining public would not get. A table at a prime dining hour, waiving of corkage, a free appetizer, cheese plate, whatever. But I always expected to pay. As I read the "invite" it seemed nothing more than a trawling ad to hopefully fill some tables during a soft-opening with industry folk who might be more likely to excuse some foibles, drink heavily, and tip heavier. I would have expected to pay. But in DC, there does seem to be some massive comp dinner escrow account that Chefs/Sous Chefs/Managers seem to make regular withdrawals from, and deposits to.
  17. Ditto. I use them whenever I can because my stress level plummets when driving on the relatively empty and expansive new road. To Rocks point, I believe they said the maximum toll would be $11.00 to go from Braddock to MD line. If they could tell drivers the time they would (could) save, there'd be a lot more people on there.
  18. This arrived in my wife's inbox. I have no idea what the menu might entail, but looking at the Tumblr , the chefs formerly worked at Blue Hill and are doing a series of farm-to-table pop-ups around the country. For $40, I'm in.
  19. To Kevin Durant. I don't even like basketball, much less NBA basketball, but you, sir, seem to be admirable.
  20. Almost every time I am out on my road bike, peddling along and obeying the traffic laws, I almost get hit by a car. Not worth it.
