  1. That's just the nature of fresh seafood. If a restauranteur is truly concerned about serving only the freshest, most pristine seafood available, which Chef Trabocchi seems to be, his menu should should be on par with steakhouse prices. Actually, when you consider the waste incurred in a menu featuring nothing but seafood, it should be much higher than a steakhouse.* *98% of steakhouses are ridiculously overpriced
  2. I'll try and post a more *substantive* review in a bit when I have more time, but our dinner here last night was one of the more enjoyable dinners I have had in the last few years. Unpretentious, generous, flawlessly executed - just really, really strong. *Having had meals at several of the "why dont they take reservations?" neighborhood hotspots, I found The Red Hen to be superior in every sense.
  3. I will be going to the Red Hen tomorrow night. My plan is to Uber over, with a fat knot of $100's, a t-shirt that boldly states "Do You Know Who I AM?", and my DonRockwell.com Dining Card. I have no doubt the combination of these four things will move me to the front of the line, and I am sure Mr. Friedman and Mr. Zutant will be overjoyed, if not outright exuberant, to have me. The rest of you can dine at 9.
  4. Tough call, but I say eat it. A long slow stew will either kill all that bacteria or make it bloom. My guess is kill the bacteria
  5. Like Jazz? Check out this free download and then race to iTunes and purchase "Enter the Dynasty" by trumpeter Dontae Winslow, his amazing wife Mashica, and their beautiful son Jedi. Dontae has some amazing artists collaborating with him on the album (Roy Hargrove, QuestLove, Chick Corea....) and is currently lead trumpet in Justin Timberlake's Band. He is a Baltimore native and graduate of the Peabody Institute. He's released the album independently, and 2,000 sales in the first week would be huge. iTunes: http://bit.ly/1kNH01g Android/Amazon: http://amzn.to/1nfYYZq Thanks!
  6. Rocks tweeted earlier in the week that several restauranteurs had reached out to him about hiring Elisir's line cooks. If anyone has a need for an excellent AM line cook, please PM me. One of my cooks worked lunch at Elisir, and he and several friends are still trying to find jobs. Thank you.
  7. back in the days when I sold wine, I popped into Paradiso on a sales cold call. It seemed to be your generic Italian restaurant, BUT they had a whole room set aside for child care with an attendant during peak hours, games, TV, etc, etc and I just thought that was brilliant. Maybe *that* is their specialty?
  8. So my wife is turning 40 next year and we were discussing taking a trip together without the kids. I asked her to put together a list of places she'd like to visit so we could start checking things out. We are limited somewhat by tavel time in order to maximize our time in country, so we mainly looked towards Europe. The list was Barcelona, Budapest, Prague, Istanbul, and Cinque Terra. I'd never heard of Cinque Terra, and asked a friend who is from Naples. He said it was breathtaking and raved about it. This is no bullshit, but I thought "I wonder if Joe H has ever been there" and logged on to DR.com in order to send him a PM. But before I could, I saw his name, on this thread, and started reading. Too funny!
  9. And the one at WTF (served as a random special) is fabulous. I've had it twice now.
  10. Because this isn't Italy, and last time I checked, habitually ripping off your employees, vendors, and the government - for 15+years- isn't a quaint part of the American way. I have heard of Mr. Bruner-Yang's transgressions exactly once. ONCE. Let me be even more clear. I believe Roberto Donna to be an extraordinary talent. I believe he has not only a right to work, in order to make a living and sustain his family, but an obligation to work, in order to pay back those to which he is indebted. I will be happy to even assist him in this endeavor with my patronage. I just need to know that people are getting paid back.
  11. This is awesome. His picture I so familiar, but I cannot place him. Can anyone tell me where he's worked? I've been in hundreds of bars/restaurants in DC but frequent none. I am sure I've bumped into him (maybe at mutiple places) and if anyone knows where he worked, hopefully it will jar my (and others) memory. Brian
  12. Roberto Donna is a brilliant Chef and deserving of all the claim, accolades, and lifestyle his talents can provide. More deserving are those whom he has wronged financially during his 20+ years plying his trade in Washington DC. I can't wait to go to this restaurant and heap praise upon the food, if it is as delicious as Joe H describes (and I am sure it is.) But that absolutely won't happen until I have heard some verification that serious restitution is being made. To date, I have heard of none.
  13. My wife stopped in here last night after having drinks with a friend. She called me, mid-meal (she never does this) and said "I'm having dinner at Thai Basil, and it's awesome." She brought me home some leftovers, which I had moments ago, and this was among the best Thai food I've ever had. I'm going to have to spend some serious time in that place over the next few months.
  14. Can you spill the beans yet?
  15. There was nothing in the original review that should have illicited this mean-spirited diatribe. His post, in my opinion, was substantive. Everything after his declination of a gracious, complimentary return visit? *meh*
  16. Really? I think the dinner menu looks decent and I would happily order 20 of the 24 items on the menu. Now, if it was a "small plate" menu......
  17. i went in there and asked if they are related to the fabulous Bangkok Golden Seven Corners and they said "kind of". I've never eaten here in 10 years, so I guess I know where I'll get dinner Friday night.
