  1. I'm surprised that there is no thread yet on Capriotti's, which opened in Midtown at 18th and M last Thursday. The place has had a massive line each day since it opened, including this weekend. I've already been three times.
  2. It's the same reason that Prince George's County used to be Prince Georges County: USPS. The local post office is "Tysons Corner" because USPS formerly had a habit of eliminating the apostrophe from place names. I have always assumed that it had to do with their systems, which historically have had trouble with apostrophes. I also eliminated them from the place names in DCDiningGuide because they were a PITA (SQL hates them).
  3. Note to publicists: You know why I think that new restaurant you're pimping is going to suck? Because you used the word "concept" to describe it.
  4. In case anyone was curious what Eater and its sister sites, Curbed and Racked, are worth...
  5. With porcupine's permission, I have embedded the coffeeshop map into DCDiningGuide.com. Hopefully this makes it a little easier to find when you're on the go.
  6. Has anyone heard anything about the distillery that is going into the old repair shop behind Family Meal (which used to be a car dealership)? It was originally reported that the space would be leased to a distiller, but Jonathan Staples (the husband of Bryan Voltaggio's partner Hilda) recently purchased distilling equipment. I'm curious whether Voltaggio is involved in the plans.
  7. On my last two visits in the last 4 months or so (the last two weeks ago), it was the same as always. It's a good sandwich, and my preferred pre-9:30 destination.
  8. I thought of this tonight as I ate a Kale Caesar at Green Pig. Their version combines two trite food items, kale and boquerones, that I hope never become trite. Kale is great in this kind of salad and boquerones are one of my favorite things (I "discovered" them at Jaleo long before they became ubiquitous, and I wonder why it took us so long). So, as a life-long resident of this area, hail yeah: "Kale to the Redskins."
  9. I believe this "solution" to the issue was first proposed to Tony Kornheiser in 1992, though he later conscripted it as his own: Apparently PETA recently revived this suggestion.
  10. The full and correct chronology is: Rockwell, Carman, Rockwell, Frederick, and Voelker. In actuality, I attribute no malicious intent to any of these parties. I suspect that the official policy at the established publications is that you don't publish a story based on rumors unless you can confirm it with a source. The disconnect is that something from a "blogger" (which most of these types equate Don with) constitutes a rumor and confirming that rumor equates with actual, original reporting. The problem with this approach is that so-called "blogged" information is not a rumor in the classic sense -- it's out there; people can read it and they do. Chalk it up to yet another example of the "mainstream media's" utter lack of comprehension regarding all things "new media." Their problem isn't irrelevance, it's stupidity. The correct way to do this is reporting that "someone my superiors don't trust is reporting . . . ." But, whatever, the publications don't care. It's food. The headlines are "a cook left his job at a place you can go to" and "Redskins hire a new cook at a place you can't." I respect the hell out of the gentleman in question and his work. But c'mon. Watergate it ain't. Which is not to say that the big guys shouldn't give credit where credit is due. Fair is fair.
  11. Being completely oblivious to something that a significant number of people interested in the "DC food scene" have already known for about two weeks would not seem to be a strong defense for one purporting to be a professional DC food reporter, no?
  12. Some of the dishes listed have a little prep involved that make the prices charged slightly easier to rationalize, but I'd be tempted to punch somebody that charged me $10 for the carrot pictured here.
  13. As first reported by the Jessica Voelker this morning. In fairness, Eater had it yesterday, citing Don as the source. The funniest thing about the "food news" business is that it's news at all. This doesn't stop me from following it, but sometimes you need to stop and appreciate the ridiculousness of it all.
  14. The only Maryland restaurant in the guide is in Baltimore.
  15. You answered your own question. Food is the most basic, and perhaps deepest, expression of culture and self. Being able to understand and -- better still -- enjoy different foods allows you to understand and appreciate new people and places better than someone who sticks to things that are familiar. I traveled to Germany for six months with a colleague who ate nothing but pizza and, when available, chicken fingers. This attitude carried over into other things and he was, by most accounts, miserable. Meanwhile, I ate, drank and explored as much as possible. I'm confident that I got to know the country and its people on a much deeper level than my colleague. I also made some real friends and had a lot more fun.
  16. The Philadelphia News Feed should be a little more interesting now. Foobooz, Philadelphia Magazine's food and booze blog (get it?) finally fixed its rss feed, so it's now available to youse guys.
  17. If Crystal City is convenient, my sister is the events manager at the Ruth's Chris and can handle this. They do banquets surprisingly well and the view is spectacular. The restaurant is on the top floor of the office building across from Jaleo and overlooks the airport and monuments. Her info is: Kathy Boone Sales Manager 2231 Crystal Drive 11th Floor Arlington, VA 22202 (703) 979-7275 Telephone (703) 625-6540 Cell (703) 979-0367 Fax salesarlington@ruthschris.com [End of family shill.]
  18. You could also reschedule it to Pohick Bay Park, which is a Fairfax County park so it's still open There are some nice picnic tables and grills down by where they rent the canoes, etc. that are free but first come, first-served.
  19. It was originally a Zayre's, which my mother inexplicably loved. Anybody remember the smorgasbord restaurant at the opposite end of the center?
