  1. Washington Deli is probably your best bet in the neighborhood, though it appears they have a minimum delivery amount (3 pizzas or the equivalent).
  2. We did! Our intern, Kathryn Chou, is a journalism major from AU. Kathryn has been posting stories in our News Feed for about two weeks, and we plan to involve her in a lot more soon. But we're expanding fairly quickly are looking to hire two interns this summer. So, if you know of someone who might be interested, please have them send their resume to dcdiningguide@gmail.com.
  3. I can't imagine there is anything that Barkeeper's Friend won't take off a pot if you're willing to scrub. I wouldn't use it on the nonstick surface itself, but if it something on the hardened exterior, I bet it would be fine.
  4. The dividing line should be whether it sells food that is ready to eat, as opposed to something that you need to cook, assemble, reheat, etc. Otherwise, no food truck is a restaurant. Regardless, Stachowski's has a table, but is in Shopping and Cooking.
  5. I met some friends at Mari Vanna on Tuesday to watch the Olympics. A lot of stuff on the menu looks good, but I never seem to make it much past the vareniki and pelmeni: They were so good we immediately ordered a second round of each. Later, we tried the blini with smoked salmon and the pirozhok: Then I think the Baltika must have started to kick in, because things got weird: We didn't last much longer after that.
  6. People who drink lattes do not like coffee. A typical Starbucks "latte" is basically a hot milkshake.
  7. It's a shame there isn't some more trustworthy source for tourists to find nearby restaurants.
  8. Cool that he named his son in honor of his growing restaurant empire.
  9. You'd be surprised. The New York City News Feed is the most viewed forum in DonRockwell.com.
  10. This is, first and foremost, a bar, and the dress is as casual as you like. You would basically need to vomit on the floor before anyone there starts to judge you. I only know this because I have been in the bar with someone who vomited on the floor. She was not made to leave, although I would have preferred she had. The food is great, though, and the upstairs dining room is removed from the crazy but retains a good view of it all. I was once one of the crazies, but it's been a good long while. I've eaten there recently and would recommend it. It's fairly sedate during Saturday dinner hours, but gets considerably more interesting after 10 p.m. Friday is busy from happy hour until close.
  11. It's got to be nearly impossible to afford Clarendon rents without a very busy bar or high prices. There really isn't a lunch crowd, at least not one that's proportionate to the number of restaurants, so you need to earn a lot in one meal.
  12. This sucks. Not that there's much to differentiate the various hot dog and papaya drink places in NY, but Gray's was my first. It's a bit like cheesesteaks in Philly: whichever one you first fall in love with is the one that you hold above all others. The original is still open, but I don't make it to the Upper West Side much.
  13. We posted the above-quoted ad for a spring intern with local universities, but also wanted to note the opportunity here in case any members know of any suitable candidates. We are interviewing this week and next, but if you make sure that the resume is submitted with "DCDiningGuide.com Spring Intern [DonRockwell.com Listing]" in the subject line, I'll make sure it gets prompt attention. If you have any questions, you can email me directly at rwboonejr@dcdiningguide.com. Rich.
  14. I can't believe that 2014 is now more than a week old and nobody has started a "best of 2013" thread. As my father once told me after our family's power had gone out due to a storm, "it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness." Despite his obviously literal intent, I'll seize on the metaphor and start: the best meal I had at a restaurant in 2013 was at The Farm and Fisherman, a tasting-menu BYOB in Philly. The best locally was at Rose's Luxury. What were your best meals last year?
  15. I recently visited Dr. Silveus, who just relocated to Tysons, because I cracked a molar. I thought I'd add that I not only received the same excellent care as always, but the practice has gone even more high-tech. They now have a milling machine that can make inlays and crowns while you wait, which means one visit instead of two. The inlay that replaced the missing part of my tooth is really beautiful work. And there's a garage that's free with validation, so parking is easy. Rich Boone
  16. There has been much background discussion about the post on DCDiningGuide. So, just to clarify: (1) Don has no bearing on what is posted there, it's just roundup of what's going on in the food world; and (2) DCDG posted the attached photo for two reasons: (i) posts look cooler if there is a photo than if there is not a photo; and (ii) I like the photo -- RJ posted it here and it reminds me of a great dinner I had at Rogue 24 with a close friend for her birthday (how can you look at it and not want to at least TRY Rogue 24?). As for the report itself, it doesn't take sides -- the post just stated what was said (it was directly quoted) and invites people to see the rest. Anyway, I guess this is an appropriate forum to say that you can see all the news at: DCDiningGuide.com's News Feed. I mean, if people are gonna get pissy about it, they should at least know it's there. I ask Chef Cooper to tell us what upset him about any of this.
  17. The opening would itself be unremarkable in a city with a lot of decent hoagie shops, but DC isn't one of them. You can find much better Italians at Stachowski's and Cheesesteaks at Ray's to the Third, but you can also find much worse ones just about everywhere. What is remarkable, in any event, is the massive response. I like the place largely out of nostalgia -- a good friend in Pennsylvania has one right by his house and we get takeout from there whenever I visit. But the sandwiches I've had at the DC branch have all been good and they're significantly better than anything I've eaten from Bub & Pops, which is directly across the street.
