  1. Evening Star is on our short list as it is always tasty, always consistent and the service is top notch. Mussels were very good, maybe a bit too much roquefort but that really isn't a problem is it? The duck spring rolls had tremendous flavor. The jambalaya on the bar menu has a great kick. The presentation of it is somewhat lacking (lumped in a too small dish) but it makes up for it in flavor. White truffle ravioli - one word - yum. The wine and beer choices add that much more to the food and ambiance. Just an overall great time.
  2. Because we were trying to keep it a secret! Kidding. I agree. It is our go to local place for crabs. The service tends to be on the poor side paticularly for tables bigger than 4, but once you get your crabs who really cares. I usually find them to be cheaper than Captain Pell's. We order by the dozen as it seems from looking around at other tables that the all you can eat crabs are smaller and come out of the kitchen more slowly. But maybe it is just the budweiser in the solo cups getting to me though. And the allure of the plastic tables and chairs outside with the usual threat of evening summer storms looming overhead adds even more to the appeal.
  3. Nor am I, just stating a personal observation. I find the options steps from my front door dizzying and that is a fantastic thing. I appreciate and thank all of you for bringing the new places in and making the neighborhood that much better. Bethesda can go pound sand! Perhaps we can all join forces and get rid of "the place that shall not be named" with the gold dome down the street. Think of all the square footage you guys could play with there! Plan to meet friends at Spider's this evening and very much looking forward to it. Question - is it non-smoking?
  4. Me too but let's not lose any more of the variety then we already have, or perhaps add some more back in. That stretch was filled with independent restaurants of the ethnic variety (Queen Bee, Atami, Little Viet Garden, Curry House, the Chinese place with the menu written on the wall). They might not have been the best, but they were different. I enjoy the Liberty Tavern/Restaurant 3/Spider Kelly/Eleven/Woodgrill/Harry's places just as much as the next guy. And although they have their differences good and bad and small and large, remember when Whitlow's was just about the only place to get "American" food between Ballston and Rosslyn?
  5. FroYo must be the new cupcake (or hamburger). The old CD Warehouse on the corner of 30th and M has Coming Soon signs for a frozen yogurt shop. Sorry can't remember the name, I was busy feeling sorry for the cd/record shop owners around the city.
  6. I second the Eat Bar burger as Very Good. And Chadwicks in Old Town as Not Bad, but not worth the special trip unless you have a wicked hangover then it is a must.
  7. We have been a few times. The kabobs are ok. Had the lamb once and it was overcooked also. Decent Lebanese for the price. The owners appear to have made a good effort fixing the place up. However, I think the reason for the big late night crowd are the hookahs, not the food.
  8. The same thing that happened to Little Viet Garden, Queen Bee, Atami, Lazy Sundae, etc., etc. etc..... (May Dr. Dremo rest in peace.) Maybe if we are lucky we will get a TGI Fridays or Chilis in the new condo they are building there for when the line at Cheesecake Factory is too long!
  9. Friday night Rasika. Sunday late afternoon at the bar at Liberty Tavern with one paper, two pizzas and a couple more than that dogfish head IPAs.....
  10. Oh lord, I can walk there from home. I think my liver just groaned.
  11. Definitely try Casa Picasa. Great tapas. Superior hosts. I think you will be pleasantly suprised. Or, if you haven't been, take a boat trip up to Rojo at the far north end of the island. The food isn't off the charts, but if you add in the atmosphere and the decor, you will enjoy. Capricorn (also north of the cut) is pricy but decent. Or when all else fails, do what we do and I am sure you may have done, eat roadside then score the plastic table outside at Cholo's and waste away the afternoon drinking the belikins and lighthouses. I am extremely jealous. We have been there 3 times also and will be back for good if I win megamillions tomorrow. p.s. go diving with Alonzo at Unda Da Sea (based out of El Pescador). Never met a comparable divemaster.
  12. Ditto. When debating between Rasika and elsewhere, Gina was always the tie breaker. If anyone finds out where she goes, please fill us in!
  13. House of India - we ate there twice on a 5 day trip. It is in Hamilton, but you have to take a cab up from the water. A bit to far to walk. Best Indian I have ever had. Maybe we hit them on a good week, but I would consider going back to Bermuda just to eat there again. L'Oriental - sushi and such. Not so bad, not fantastic. But the italian place below it serves up HUGE glasses of wine, so go there first and it might not matter so much. Pickled Onion - mixed fare. Right on the main drag, so if you sit on the balcony expect to stare at a big freaking cruise ship.
  14. I mash mine by hand first and then use hand mixer for adding milk and butter. I agree with adding the milk gradually. A good secret is to boil/scald the milk first and then add it a little at a time while blending with the hand mixer. Also room temperature butter adds to creaminess, like 2 or 3 sticks(!!).
  15. For a Saturday night dinner, mini-reunion of sorts for 10 college friends. I am looking for a place with good to great atmosphere, good to great food (moderately priced $30ish/person) and great to excellent drinks (price not an issue! - only weekend away from kids for most of them). They are staying in hotels in the West End but up for any location. A place that takes reservations would be a bonus. I have lots of mothers with toddlers in this group that don't get out sans little ones (or husbands!) very often, so the pressure is on and any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
  16. Great news! Now the people waiting in line for the Cheesecake Factory can have somewhere to pass the time......
  17. Vero is excellent, but I would recommend more for a leisurely dinner when you have time to enjoy it. If you are looking for quick and inexpensive, I would go with Taqueria Poblano at Lee Hghwy and Harrison Street. Authentic food, but not too spicy to kill any wine tasting buds.
  18. The pre-made meals are very good indeed. And extremely handy for last minute dinner guests when you are in a pinch. Although, almost every meal I have tried has been heavy on the salt. I am not a big fan of salt, so it was a bit overpowering but not horrible. My dining mates have had no complaints though.
  19. It appears that it will wear both hats. We stopped by on friday night - the bar was open to the public, but not the restaurant part. I think it has potential space-wise. Comfy place with plenty of seating options. Great beers on tap (the stout was excellent) -with one noted exception... I am a bit nervous that they have PBR on tap. I certainly hope that the presence of this one tap will not cause those who may otherwise frequent the Clarendon Ballroom or Whitlow's to gather en masse. Not that there is anything wrong with that beer or people who enjoy those places, but the neighborhood could use another higher end place like Harry's, Eleventh or the Woodgrille for those who enjoy a post-Dehli Club cocktail.
  20. I second the Nam Viet recommendation. We have been fans for years. Fortunately, it has been saved from the bastardization of Clarendon. I was happy to see that it did not get torn down as they literally built an apartment building over it. No more patio overlooking a parking lot - oh well. But the goodness is all inside! I recommend almost everything but my favorite is the grilled pork over vermicelli as well. Sometimes the spring rolls can be a bit greasy but oh so worth it...
  21. We did Willow for RW also. Agree with Laura's assessment. Our table of 6 had 4 different entree selections. The beef was by far the best. The fried chicken was great also - not too dry not too greasy. The spinach was good, but a tad salty. BUT - the carrot cake!!! Holy cow. Who knew! I'm not a big sweets eater, but it was the best dessert I have had in the last 5 years. Next time I go, I will be sitting at the table next to Laura housing on the carrot cake.
  22. We have been a few times and it is just ok. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to overly complain about. A couple of times we only went because Dehli Club was too crowded. I much prefer the new Sala Thai and Sawatdee down the street. Both are consistent, flavorful and a great value. By the way, what happened to Singh Thai? Did it just change names or owners?
  23. The food was quite phenomenal from the appetizers all the way through to the dessert. Probably the best meal I have ever had in Richmond. We had mouth-watering duck, lamb, gorgonzola pasta, the crab appetizer, and a few other dishes I can't even remember (there were 6 of us). However, we had such a bad experience with the owner(?)/host, that I will not go back. The best food in the world is not worth being treated like crap while you wait for a table.
  24. We finally decided to go to the Curry House instead of Delhi Cluba few weeks ago. And we went back again this week. I have to say I think it was on par with Delhi Club. And since I very much dislike the dining room at the latter, I would have to say given the option I would go back to the Curry House. The wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The naan was light and tasty. I had the butter chicken, which was very flavorful. Although Delhi Club and Delhi Daba (for "fast food") Indian are both quite good, I would give India Curry House a shot if I were you.
