  1. Anything I can get my hands on after the debacle that was the Capitals playoff run.
  2. +1 on the Rhodeside vote. The honey-pepper wings are really good.
  3. I went to a birthday party about 2 years ago and the hostess raved and raved to anyone and everyone that she got the cake from Cakelove. I agree with the above poster that a box of duncan hines and some canned frosting would have been better. But the funny part was that the trash can in the bathroom was filled with plates of uneaten cake as were the bookshelves lining the hallway. I went back in the kitchen and realized the hostess was sitting in front of the trash can, so people were ditching the cake wherever they could.
  4. Gina at PS7 makes this insanely good drink with rum, vanilla, fresh orange juice and rootbeer crust on the rim. I think the exact ingredients should be on the menu on the website.
  5. I agree that it was a harsh reaction and completely over the top given the source. However, I thought Sietsema should have taken more responsibility for posting it in the first place. Reading both the chats and the tweets made me feel like I was watching a school girl start a rumor and then feign disbelief with her buddies in the lunch room when it hit the fan.
  6. On our way to Blue Duck friday night and decided to give this a try instead. Most excellent decision on our part. Walked in around 7:15 and there was a wait for tables. The place was hopping! Fortunately, we saddled up to the bar just as 2 were leaving and were set for the night. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of our bartender, but he was excellent, engaging and very attentive. Opened the wine list to discover my 2 new favorites were both on the list (due solely to an awesome tasting dinner at Eve and the assistance later of Mr. Thrasher in piecing back together what we drank that night ). We also had a bottle of the Chateau Olivier, which was quite good and recommended by the I-need-to-figure-out-his-name bartender. We started with the scallops appetizer with the tequila ice. I am not a scallops person (consistency issues) but these were fantastic. We had the pork chop and duck for mains. Both were very good and perfect for a freezing cold night. I don't remember seeing the aforementioned meatlof on the menu, but the chicken pot pie lookied appealing. Finished with the butterscotch pudding desert. What a complete suprise at how awesome that was. I think I would go back just for the pudding. All in all, a bang up evening. We plan to return and are very excited to have this on the short list of west end options.
  7. One of the most underrated places around in my opinion. Made a few visits recently and spent the last two snowstorms (now that I am too old to hang at the 4 Courts all day) there drinking great beer and eating warm comfort food. The grilled cheese is tasty (not like stoneys but still great) and paired with soup of the day. The wings are meaty, not greasy and a bit sweet but substantial. Tasted the pulled duck and would make a trip back just for that. Even the plain chicken sandwich was worth shoveling the car out for. The crabcake was a miss but I suppose there has to be one thing not quite up to snuff. I also was granted tastes of the short ribs and stuffed pork chops, both of which were top notch. And if not for the food, go for the drink! The HH specials and the beer list - oh my, the beer list! - should be enough to drag you over from the Wilson Blvd side over to Clarendon Blvd. Or not, more space at the bar for us! Thanks to Chef Robinson - Restaurant 3 is at the top of our short list now.
  8. Ecco is the first place I thought of too! I have not had it myself, but I have also heard on good authority that the lasagna at Kora is noteworthy.
  9. I completely and whole-heartedly second this suggestion from above. "'t Brugse Beertje (pics) - no food here, but our favorite beer bar in Brugge. A great list, and unrivaled atmosphere." A few years back, we dropped in for a quick beer on a rainy day and ended up playing cards with some locales while doing serious damage to the beer list. In the top ten on my list of best days ever.

  11. I highly recommend Nine One Five in Key West. The whole fish was phenomenal, followed by the steak option (I can't remember the cut). The wild mushroom risotto was acceptable. Decent wine list. Seven Fish came highly rated. The fish was fairly decent but presentation was horrendous. I agree with the bove poster that there was just way to much going on on the plate. Even more horrendous was the fact that they tried to rush us out of there with appetizers and deserts in under an hour. Even after we ordered a second bottle of not so cheap wine. I think we spent 10 bucks a minute to be there. Go to Sarabeth's for breakfast or lunch. Awesome muffins, pancakes, fresh squeezed juices. Oh, and Finnegan's Wake for irish car bombs if it is raining.
  12. Did I hear a rumor that Gina left? I haven't been there in over a month. I knew she was waiting to move into her own place, but word is she left for H Street golf place in the meantime. Fact or fiction?
  13. We love Evening Star and it remains in our regular rotation of at least twice a month. I have no complaints at all about the food, my problem is always with the wine served by the glass. I have no beef with the selection - that is fantastic. My problem is that it is always, without fail, served too warm. I like a good red wine and am no wine snob, but often it is borderline hot. I have had them stick the glass in the fridge many times but normally, god forbid, I just ask for a water with it and throw a small cube in to chill it down from nasty warm. Given the association with Planet Wine and given that I mention this every time I go, it still never ceases to surprise me. Am I the only one that has this problem there? I should note we generally sit in the bar And I must repeat - I have no issues with the food and/or the service. They are both top notch and keep me going back to drink my ice cubed wine.
  14. I would only go to Capt. Pell's if you would be truly inconvenienced going someplace else. We order from there about twice a year and always pay more than from other places for smaller crabs that aren't as good. We got them from the wharf 2 weeks ago. I think we paid about $165 for mediums but I would have pegged them as closer to large. Chock full o' meat, sweet and not watery. They skimped on the old bay but we got over it since we had our own. Capt. Pell's is ok in a crunch but my money is on the wharf. Plus they never stay warm when Pell's gives them to you in a cardboard box.
  15. We were lazy and ended up at Dehli Club because it is so close. The food is consistently good there, so I am not complaining. The chicken in the biryani was a bit dry. But for the most part the rest of the meal was good and service as great as ever. We also tried the kashmiri naan - has raisin, cashews, pistachios and couple other things I can't remember. It was great but sweet. We ended up eating it after as a dessert. Thanks for all of the recommendations. Now that I have had my initial fix, I can't wait to go up to Heritage in Glover Park. We had cocktails after on the patio at Restaurant 3. No problem getting a seat at 8 on a friday night. I should probably put this in their thread, but I think this place gets overlooked in all of the hulabaloo about Clarendon. We have also eaten there twice in the last month or so. Their crabcakes suck (was that cilantro in there?) but the rest of their menu is full of pleasant surprises. Hits have been the tuna pops, the burger, lettuce wraps and the short ribs. I think they had a lobster roll that someone liked too. I suppose I should not talk them up too much because the patio might actually fill up.
  16. Ditto on the request for DC recommendations! Bonus to those received in the next 90 minutes.
  17. I might have missed that one, but the tuna in the ice cream cone shaped thingy from Source was amazing. As was the champagne from the booth next to it!
  18. The peruvian chicken place on Walter Reed has made it into our regular rotation. Simple, easy, consistently good. Some nights it is on par with Pollo Rico, but it is always reliably adequate. I have no idea what the name of it is though. I second the thoughts about the Lost Dog. Hopefully they will not have the oh-sorry-we-are-out-of-that-one syndrome that often happens at the original location. I heard the pub was a branch of McGinty's in Silver Spring. That stretch is in desparate need of a pub or anything to call a local joint. The LA Bar and Grill doesn't cut it. Maybe we can start a "Bring Guinness to the Pike in '09" club.
  19. Kids or no kids, the beer list is worth the trip. Not Rustico great, but certainly Lee Highway good. As to the debate - It was explained to me that they would not turn the volume on during an afternoon football game because of the family atmosphere. Those may not have been the exact words, but that was the idea conveyed. Whatever. Point is - sit at the bar with a good friend or a good book and after one or a few of the great draft or bottle selections, who cares what is going on behind you. You may even want to color some yourself at that point. And for all the haters, sayers, or whatevers, I am not sold on the food alone quite yet - so if the beer list wasn't there I would probably opt for someplace else. And maybe the next person who goes could suggest a dimmer on the lights! Dare I say it was chuck-e-cheese-bright in there.
  20. The one further west is closed permanently. The original has been non-smoking for quite a long time. You can now give it the love it deserves and not stink afterward. Well, at least not stink like smoke...
  21. Would appreciate any recommendations for an afternoon late-lunch stop after 2 or 3 wine tastings. We've got a big-40 in the group who is EXTREMELY fond of pubs, i.e. food not as important as atmosphere and Harp/Guiness. We will be out in the Markham/Middleburg area. Thought about Red Horse. Could do Leesburg too. Would love to do Griffin Tavern, but that's too far afield. Thanks!
  22. I am curious as to why he responded to a New York blog but not to any local D.C. blog. (well, not really, just provoking on a dreary afternoon) Not a very good ambassador that Spike.
  23. Hands down one of the best steak and cheeses/cheese steaks (whatever your preference I am indifferent) I have had. The crinkly fries also very good and remind me of elementary school. Walked out of there and all I wanted to do was wash my face - that's good grease my friends. I am not saying I could put one of these away every week or even once a month, but it is up there on my list of hangover-go-to-food.
