  1. It's on the bar menu and available every day. I think the All American on bar menu is $12 (maybe 14) but you get the duck fat fries with it too!

  3. I wasn't expecting this gut punch on a Wednesday afternoon. That stinks. Best of luck to Chef Ed and thank you for many, many wonderful meals. While other visits were amazing, the tasting we did back in 2013 is still probably the best meal I have ever had. (no offense to the Tarver/Neal combo in their Ashby Inn heyday)
  4. We were in last week and when ordering a beer were told that they didn't have a liquor license presently. The waiter said they had to reapply for the license because they had new management. I don't know how the licensing process works but it sounds like things are changing there. For what its worth, the food was still fantastic and if you want a beer you can bring your own. We saw several customers run over to the Shoppers after they ordered and bring beer back.
  5. The Top Jewelers is a small, family run jewelry store on South Arlington on Columbia Pike and S. Barton Street. It is across from Penrose next to Celtic House (and not to be confused with the Tops China on the backside of the strip mall). They have a surprisingly large and beautiful selection and are just the nicest people ever. Michael is the gentleman who runs the store now. They are excellent on repairs as well. Did a better job repairing my Tissot watch than the manufacturer. If they don’t have what you are looking for, they often will let you go through catalogs and order for you – think silver baby cups and the like. Keep them in mind when you are shopping small businesses! Liz Gill
  6. We ordered from here using the Amazon deal. CTM and lamb biryani. Both were solid. The spice was more complex than I expected, so I was pleased. It wasn't Haandi good but good enough to add it to the delivery rotation. As FYI - the amazon delivery was 33 minutes from order to food on the doorstep. A very nice delivery guy. I was impressed.
  7. That is my favorite flavor and I agree it is less salty and more sweet. I attributed that to the fact that the last 2 times we bought it there seems to be a ton more chunks of chocolate in the container then there used to be, which, for some odd reason, disappoints me.

  10. Another amazing tasting dinner at One Block West. I cannot believe this place does not get more press. Chef is still firing on all cylinders. We had salmon tartar, tile fish, an amazing mushroom pastry, duck liver, and quail. The pairings were spot on as was the wonderful service. Even though it is absolutely 100% worth the drive, I so wish this place was closer.
  11. New ownership. Jason, the wine director, is knowledgeable and engaging. He really has a lot to offer. Menu mostly the same but they have several more entrees to choose from than before. I did not have it, but the ahi tuna got quite good reviews from my dining companions. The big change, though, is the whiskey. They now have about 30 to choose from and are touting as a wine and whikey bar. No other liquor, just the good stuff. And also a few beers on tap - I don't remember what they were though. Between the shelf here and the list at Marble & Rye up the street, you can drink yourself from Scotland to Kentucky and back 50 times over.
  12. We went and were pleased with what we had. All food and drink is from 100 mile radius and new management. The soft opening menu above is the one we had. 100% Virginia wine. We had 2 or 3 of them and were impressed at the quality and price point. It's not RDV or Linden but the reds were good. I think they need to be more descriptive on the menus given the unique wineries they have chosen and the likelihood that NOVA people have not heard of them. We drink a lot of VA wine and I hadn't heard of 3 of them, but they definitely held their own. And, Lord, do they have a lot of whiskey to choose from! (more on that in a Twisted Vines post) The shortribs were amazing. That small plate was big enough for a meal. They also appear to be very cognizant of the hurdles they have to overcome re: the reputation of service issues from the Red Rocks incarnation of the space. So that's good news. I wish them all well.
  13. About 3 months ago helplessly trapped on a stupid little usair plane waiting for those dumb busses to show up to take us to the terminal, one word was spoken. Ray's. That was all. Nothing else was necessary. We went there straight from the airport with luggage in tow (which they kindly stored for us) and Michael was there. It was a Sunday night. It also turned out to be the best single word spoken in months. Steaks were phenomenal and service impeccable. Nothing has changed. We also tried the appetizer that has a huge scallop, huge shrimp and a shot of bisque. It was excellent as well. I note that I was in there again a few weeks ago and they had bar stools at the bar in the back room (the retro room?). I don't recall seeing those there before. Nice option for a solo diner craving a good meal.
  14. Bump. There are quite a few choices in Rapp County now. Tulas Off Main. Washington. Great place. We have tried and were very impressed by the scallop, beef and shrimp entrees. Good beer and wine selection. They also have a very nice brunch. It is owned by the Thorton Grill folks but is much better. I think it is reasonably priced, particularly given its neighbor. If you are out that way for a drive or a hike, this would be my highest recommendation. El Quijote. Sperryville. Tapas in Sperryville! It is in the River District Arts Center next to the distillery. Beautiful and fun space. There are several hits on the menu. Don't get the gambas first as the dish will blow your palate. They are really good though. We have yet to try the paella. We have seen it come out and it looks good. Those eating appeared to be enjoying it very much. It is only open Thurs. to Sat. And they have flamenco dancers on Saturday nights. Headmasters Pub. Sperryville. Pub food. They are expanding and putting in a 9 hole par 3 right on the corner of 211. I think the course opens next week. This is a bar so don't expect fine dining, but it is a neat space and you can browse the antiques at the same time. Rudy's Pizza. Sperryville. Not called the best pizza in Sperryville for nothing. I am only half joking, the pizza is actually really good. There is also The Griffin and Flint Hill Public House in Flint Hill that others have spoken about and both have been there for some time. Burgers at the Griffin rock. Flint Hill is acceptable, pretty room though. DO NOT MISS the tasting room in the basement of the Hopkins Ordinary B&B in Sperryville. Next to the Post Office. They have just opened a small tasting room and the beer is amazing. The saison and the amber are my personal favorites. When I say small, I mean small. It fits about 8 people. Even if you have to hang out and wait for a spot, you will not regret it. They sell growlers and big bottles. BTW - I am not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but Blue Rock Inn is closed some time back and for sale. The food there was always hit or miss but we really enjoyed the view from the patio.
  15. I highly recommend the K-1 convenience store on Columbia Pike across from Penrose Square. The selection in this tiny place will blow your mind.
  16. Learn something new every day. I always thought it was Laughlin who came up with that 5 hole expression himself. "Putting the biscuit between the pipes through the five hole" can certainly have many meanings to the non-hockey trained ears. Personally, the Caps have been crushing my hopes and dreams consistently since circa 1980 or so. What can I say, I am a glutton for punishment. But oh how much fun were the games back at the Caps Center when tickets were like 10 bucks and a total of 5,000 or so of us in the house cheered them on. My favorite part was at the start of the 3rd period when they let all of us up in the nose bleeds move down to the blue seats... Oh the memories. Come on Caps - prove me wrong this year!!
  17. Looking forward to dinner at Herbsaint on the 29th!! Curious as to your recommendations for uptown - can you share 1 or 2? We will be there Sunday and Monday night too. If cabs are hard to come by uptown on those nights, where do you recommend elsewhere? Thanks in advance!
  18. Wow, going back through this thread has given me a complex. Such disdain for the name Liz. I can tell you that I am called Liz b/c it beats the shit out of primarily being called Lizard for the first 17 years of my life, which is the name my loving 5 older siblings christened me with. Although in the 4th grade I tried to be Beth. Got a tshirt in Myrtle Beach with the ironed on letters that said Beth and everything. But it didn't stick.

  20. The back room at William Jeffrey's is nice. Also very close to the Cemetery with validated parking in the building.
