  1. Yep, seen at Costco Fairfax for $10.99/lb.
  2. Starting a list! agm +1 catharine +1 DanielK +1 goldenticket +1 goodeats +1 monavano +1 TheMatt thistle Tweaked (15 so far!)
  3. Nope. I was there when two of the buses unloaded once, and it was definitely not Chinese wedding banquet. It was the wave-the-red-flag/umbrella/pole-and-follow-me tours.
  4. Have you given Cedar a try? I think it's a stable place to dine and it's walkable. Other walkable place is Bandolero, or maybe cheese it up and go to Hill Country? Pi and get some pizza?
  5. China Garden always has at least two parked in the evening during the times I've driven by.
  6. Can we throw out some dates? Dormant thread = sad face. June 11 or 12? June 26 or 27?
  7. Hi All, I'm taking my mom to NYC for weekend trip and would love to take her to a really nice Italian restaurant. She has nostalgia for an excellent Italian restaurant in the theatre/broadway district that we went to back in 1992. Mom has never forgotten it but I think the restaurant is no longer there (based on some initial research, I assume it's the now closed Mama Leone's). It was her life-changing moment on Italian food. Is there something similar or better? I don't know where we're staying at, but presumably somewhere in Manhattan. Thanks for your help!
  8. Probably not. I've always heard it's hard to find parking in Chelsea and nearby but not sure about Meatpacking district.
  9. The Friends of Arlington's Planetarium is having a special viewing tonight, starting at 5:45pm at the top deck of the Kettler Iceplex in Ballston. ARLnow has some suggestions too.
  10. Yikes, Pat!! (Sorry we only saw each other briefly -- I was concerned how I was going to boil the dumplings w/o a stovetop that I forgot my manners!) How can the original recipe omit salt in brownies? Seems contradictory. I always thought you added everything to the chocolate butter mix (after it has cooled a bit, of course)?
  11. agm's ribs, taken off bone and stir-fried with some broccoli and julienned zuccini in lemongrass Xochitl10's recommended hitomebore rice. (Mmm.) IKEA's elderflower syrup in some lemon seltzer water
  12. I can only speculate based on reading the ingredients on the main site, but the naturally light (review) has pure fructose versus the cane sugar used in the tonic and the lemon tonic, so I can only imagine there might be a slight difference on the sugar taste of the G&T, as well as if you want a more pronounced lemony twist (due to the bitter lemons used) to it as well?
  13. I really don't have any experience, but Michael Ruhlman had a nice recipe, as did this chef's forum. Hope this helps....
  14. Wow! It was super great to see everyone and meet new members!! The weather could not have cooperated more. Minus some apparently uncooperative neighbors in C-3 apparently, it was a very jovial crowd. Many thanks to thistle to the rescue! I didn't plan very well and couldn't boil my dumplings and wontons until thistle brought her camping stove. I really must get one of these too. Came late with little man and was already kind of full from a friend's lunch party, so I didn't try as many things as I wanted to. Here are the samples I did try. Traditional-great memories-deviled eggs from Scott and Cucas87 Blenheim Ginger Ale from ol_i Biriyani from fishinnards Ribs from agm Wild Goose Pastrami from jacquesc Pulled pork by thistle (and great pound cake!) Panchan from sparkycom (the kalbi looked awesome!!) Smoked salmon canapes from DCDeb Ricotta cheesecake prepared lovingly by barbara Fresh rosemary to take home from lperry Pie courtesy of 1000yregg (sorry you missed the dumplings...) (Nice pics, 1000yregg! Looks like I missed a few more dishes - the fried chicken looks great!)
  15. Alright! Super excited and on my calendar...thanks for setting this up, Don!
  16. I would PM sparkycom - she always has good ideas!
  17. Porcupine - click on the "share" button and then copy the link shown there. I hope this is what you mean...
  18. I found Ethiopic to be a bit expensive compared to Meaza or Etete (it's that darn price-to-portion ratio!), I think. However, this is based a single visit a few weeks back. I do agree the quality of their beef is higher than some of the other Ethiopian places, based on my friend's order of her kitfo, so go there if that point is very important to you. The Ethiopian staff at my parking garage recommends Etete or Meaza (and Dukem still), fwiw. Yes! Little man was happily noshing the one time I went too and kept in good company with many families indoors and out on their outdoor seating area. Same at Meaza too. I really miss Queen Makeda, as the two times I went with little man when he was an infant/toddler, their staff happily played with him a lot.
  19. The hitomebore rice went perfectly with the stewed chicken. It came out plump and fluffy, with a tender taste. Little man could not get enough! I had leftovers which became perfectly shaped rice balls. Thanks again for the rec!
  20. Menu. I am intrigued - $20 Tuesday anyone? The staff at Banh Mi So #1 were enthusiastically talking this place up last night... --- Click me! DR
