  1. I sense a $50+ Tuesday event coming up--I'm a visual person so I would love if ol_i or someone can help me equip in case something else happens. I read this and other things and find myself overwhelmed. Rt now I have lanterns and two flashlights that helped but not enough. Would this be a good shopping event, anyone?
  2. Yes. I took little man there intending to use my Amazon offer but ended up using my Scoutmob. It's a smooth gelato compared to Dolci Gelati or Pitango but a tad on the sweet side for me. I like it better than Bocato but if I had choice, I'd opt for one of the other two or Dolcezza. But 1. Ymmv; 2. Compared to Larry's or Bocato, I would come here; 3. Compared to Pinkberry for frozen treat, I would opt for Pinkberry over 2. or Red Mango & Paciugo. However, this is based on one visit. I plan on trying it again for a more detailed comparison.
  3. One clear long thin one and a few bits plus a circular one. Never seen squid cartilage--I feel so ignorant. It's usu cleaned when I buy at the Asian store--thanks Junebacon
  4. Sounds like an off day. When I went last I found it pricey (but I feel that way abt tapas in general); the flavors were clean (minus finding plastic in my squid) and balanced. It won't break taste bud boundaries but thought its a nice addition to the area...
  5. Oh gosh--does Milan still serve really good donuts? Because I think I'm craving one now...
  6. Natalia's is the closest to a sit-down buy pastries read the newspaper type of place that Stacy's had; but the warm feeling of original Stacy's had isn't present. Many many families hang out hear to eat, read and catch up w/friends at Natalia's and the Starbucks down the street. It's def considered a FC staple and neighborhood place much like Dogwood or Clare & Dons
  7. Sort of-Natalia's Elegant Creation serves decent coffee, depending on the day. They have nice pastries and sandwiches. It's next to little man's fave toy store, Doodlehopper, and also the Local Market on broad st.
  8. My whole street lost power since 10:30pm on Friday night and didn't come back on until 6:30-ish pm Monday night. I am thankful Tuesday is trash day in my neighborhood, as the air certainly reflects the massive clear outs folks are having. I found the Twitter feed for WTOP radio and Dominion Power really helped A LOT! I felt really updated between Twitter and FB on what to do with food. I also found out that some renters and home insurance companies will cover food spoilage, minus a deductible. Many of the hotels are booked, based on tweets, and Arlington County has setup cooling centers to help folks recharge their electronics. Land lines/cell receptions/cable services/internet connections are all sketchy between the various providers. I went into Falls Church Target today in hopes to find a car charger, only to find that they had a small generator that supported the bare minimum: a small grid of lights, some check out stations that offered credit cards and that was it. No a/c, no food. The Goodwill center and all the food places in that shopping center, as far as I could see, were closed. Driving down on Route 50 encountered a slew of lights without power. The police "coned off" the in-betweens so no car can turn or cross through. It was still a bit scary driving. As of this afternoon, my local Harris Teeter was still out of power. I am very grateful to the hard-working folks participating in clean up -- it is tough. Fairfax County and the City of Falls Church have advised boiling your water. Arlington states its water is safe to consume without boiling, and that is the latest I have read. The storm reminded me of the typhoons I was in back in Taiwan.
  9. All I can say is *do not* go into the Grand Mart in Seven Corners. If they were rated by the health dept, they would get an F based on the last time I went in. Absolutely filthy. Near you, beachgirl54, I usually take the drive to Great Wall for spices, sauces, snacks, veggies, and some comfort food stuff. H Mart nearby there is now my go to place for rice and simple houseware stuff. I drive to the little supermarket next to Little Saigon on Wilson Blvd if I need some things in a pinch. I was never impressed with Lotte on Route 50 and sometimes will drive to Super H in Fairfax for housewares, but I tend to find a lot between Great Wall, H Mart and the markets in Rockville.
  10. Definitely not making money if you visit on July 4! Lobsters are $17.76. My mom and I enjoyed a nice one last Friday at lunch. I only wish the meters had a parcmobile option in Bethesda.
  11. I don't know with either, but China Garden certainly comes to mind with its space. I think sparkycom would have some ideas if you PM her?
  12. Because they're adhering to Buddhist vegetarian standards, I don't think they're allowed to have alcohol. I don't even think they're using cooking wine in their cooking like typical Chinese households do; especially since alcohol affects the body, which is why they don't use garlic, chives, leeks, onions, etc. So I am rather surprised that they even have non-alcohol beers, as it sounds like they're caving into peer pressure. Interesting.
  13. Thanks jayandstacey! I really needed that laugh and explanation. I also love the trivia (which hopefully will be handy in this week's trivia quest). On a separate note, I found it interesting that the commercial featured paper boxes...my first introduction of McDonald's was in Styrofoam boxes. I also miss the old Birdie and Grimace commercials (Bring back Mayor McCheese!).
  14. I feel like I missed something, considering that Willard Scott was the first Ronald McDonald...(very appropo, non?) [back into the cave I go. It'll be sporadic.]
  15. It's true. I often misread things. I can admit it, and with the fact that I am particularly sensitive nature as a whole, words tend to multiply ten fold. All someone has to do is say, "hey, goodeats, you misread," and that can be that. My posts are not meant to discourage any type of discussion, argument, discourse, white paper, etc. It is mainly sometimes to say, "hey, are you sure you meant to write what you wrote?" Plus, what you wrote, lackadaisi, just meant you disagreed with what I wrote, and I happily accept that. Sadly, replying on smartphone tends to lead to double-posting for me, and I can't delete that. So I tried to make it funny, which failed, in this case. My apologies for misleading anyone. My intentions are good, but it seems like they are mistaken. I think it's obviously time for me to go into a hole, given some of the feedback I have been getting. Thanks. With that, I am horribly off-topic, other than the slight comment of, "Oh, I should really try this place based on what people have been writing!"
  16. It ended up being such. ARLnow.com reports its closing. I wish Columbia Pike restaurants would do better. First Sauca and now here.
  17. I don't think it's a placebo - this remedy makes sense, as the acid in the onion would probably kill the poison or coagulate the blood or some chemical effect that would dull the nerves. Cool trick.
  18. Wow - I just realized I never followed up. Well, here is a placeholder...
  19. That's why you only take half! Sadly, little man has the opposite effect - it makes him hyperactive. I just stumbled upon this product that helps with bites, especially helpful since I'm allergic to the stup...silly mosquito bites. Apparently bamboo too, since I got caught in some bamboo that left me with some mini-splinters and this ailment to help me cope. Yeesh.
  20. PoP reports temporarily closing for a year due to construction. (I heard this wrecked havoc in Adams Morgan and caused massive traffic jams for this morning commute. I feel for the businesses at 14th & U St right now.)
  21. I was SO excited to find out this works. My first batch failed, but I think it's because my yogurt sat too long in the fridge. So I tried again yesterday, and was way too excited to find yogurt made when I opened up the container today! I used Food in Jars recipe.
