  1. Right dat. I drove by yesterday to just see how close they are to opening [this time]. There was a sign taped to a front window noting their opening this evening and inviting folks in to pickup a menu. The door was open, Alan and crew were setting up the front cashier area and I got a menu. Really red walls and the tables in the front room are in place. At 5p today, I'll be at the other not-so-soft opening. HollywoodEastCafe_April2010.pdf
  2. I'd add Phở to the word list. With this group, a spelling bee would be more challenging.
  3. Yes, I liked it too. Did anyone hear Tony and Eric Ripert on Martha Stewart Radio starting last month? Missed them and wonder if there are "reruns" anywhere. How "bad" can Tony be is he's on Martha Stewart's guest list? Photo credit: Daniel Krieger
  4. Looks like La Madeleine is getting even more soul-less with this robotic prototype: http://www.nrn.com/breakingNews.aspx?id=380144
  5. A sure sign of meteorological spring: Flippin' Pizza is now the official pizza of the Nationals. They'll be taking over the former Papa John's locations in the Park. I need to try their pizza with a beer in the sunshine [now].
  6. Cross-posting: it is good "get a quick slice" utility pizza and may taste even better with Nationals ballpark beer.
  7. Looks promising for Takoma Park! I missed Tim Carman's article when it was published. Good that their weekend cafe starts at 9:00. I've found that GSPOT's 11:30 weekend time is beyond my hunger threshold.
  8. After reading The New Yorker article, I'm interested in the "expeditionary team" road coversation. Four hours on the road with Calvin Trillin [half of it after having a gastric group hug from Peter Chang] must have been an adventure on its own.
  9. I went to the local Borders today to no avail. Their truck deliveries were delayed by the snow fall. No matter. I gave myself a free, trial subscription to the New Yorker's digital edition. Done.
  10. There was a special toast to our cul-du-sac neighbor and his snow blower. This possibly Harley-Davidson-modified model made a meal of our toothsome precipitation. Dry pavement in our driveway! While we weren't able to supply his first choice, Miller Lite, hopefully he and his wife enjoyed his second: a stray Chardonnay [sterling 2007] from our magic closet in the basement.
  11. I'm not sure of why that chose that site [?parking] -- it's a good question for Shannon [the GM] or the founding partners. No, although Jerry's was also getting a Liquor Control Hearing last week:
  12. It's getting to be like Groundhog's Day when we get a peek at this year's effort with the Maryland General Assembly. Today, Dave McIntyre reported some good news:
  13. I found myself late Saturday afternoon peckish and north of Frederick. Solution: bar lunch at Volt. Definitely hit the spot with the snacks menu [goat cheese ravioli, hot pastrami and a glass of Côtes du Rhône]. Most interestingly, it was the end of the day for nearby merchants and several dropped by for their quitting-time drink/snacks. Very cool. If you think Volt's manager is well-Suited, you'll find his tailor is across the street. He's at Murdock's Tailoring & Alterations/Rags to Riches 237 N. Market Street. We probably don't need to be weekly regulars like the Steins, but a couple of trips to Volt would wrap-up long overdue alterations.
  14. Construction update: The buildout started last Wednesday , January 13th, with a "scheduled" completion in early April. There's a sign on the door noting their January 21st beer/wine/liquor license hearing. [scroll to the bottom of the agenda for mention of another newish board fav] Another update includes a placeholder website and a "good to go" mention in WaPo [do they really make the moz in-house now?]. Thankfully, they've allowed Nottingham's website to outgrow its adolescent phase and it's now putting a less obnoxious foot forward.
  15. NYMag's Grub Street inventoried who's for, against and on the fence.Did Baltimore have any success with its no target, voluntary awareness program?
  16. From this week's Washington Business Journal: Very interesting interview accompanied by an uncredited photo of svelte Dean.
  17. I relate to this because of the characters we've met here:
  18. Tim Carman recently dined at China Jade and posted about it on his blog. There are a couple of photos on his blog, but better ones on the restaurant's linked website. If you dined before February 2009, it was with chef Chun Lee's Cantonese kitchen. Thankfully, he remains with the addition of the HKP dishes.
  19. This week's Nation's Restaurant News reported on the winning survey results garnered by Five Guys in the Quick Service Restaurant category. ETA: In the past 24 hours or so, Five Guys has been on a serious PR/Marketing tear. "Checkout" PlanetMoney's Shopping Center Competition and listen to the "Alex meets the burger king" entry. Also liked the way the satisfaction survey data was corrected for overall business size.
  20. It's been tough waiting for HECOB to reopen. So bad, I half remembered Todd Kliman's snippet last summer about Dim Sum being served at Tai Shan in Montgomery Village. This location has always been pretty steady for mains even before the name/ownership change [back in the pre-butterstick, Peking Supreme days]. A couple of Sundays ago I went and found that a display case of tendon, seaweed peanuts and other cold dim sum had replaced the first couple of booths inside the dining room. The dim sum is ordered from a menu [attached], not carts, and is delivered from the kitchen when ready. I had pumpkin pancake [more like a bun], scallion pancake [no too oily] and pan-fried pork buns. The setting is almost serene compared with New Fortune and seemed to pick up after noon with Asian families. TaiShanDimSum_Dec2009.PDF
