  1. Had dinner here last week. Highlights: Pork Belly Tacos al Pastor (love that they use Chinese steamed buns instead of typical tortilla), Serrano Ham Flatbread (not particularly Latin or Asian but nice texture, Serrano is Spanish ham isn't it?), Yucca fries with a great dipping sauce (chimichurri, lime aioli- sounded like it would be too much but the flavors blended really well). Not as into the Kobe beef brisket (overcooked) or black cod (also overcooked). Overall- a great experience and a nice space. Bar was packed. Glad to have a new option in the neighborhood. Welcome Antonio!
  2. Tasted the marrow bones today. Mmmmmmm- like beefy butter Thanks for everything Mark. Everyone had a fantastic time.
  3. I have bought the peach and prosecco jam at the U Street Farmer's Market and loved it. The chef is there most Saturday mornings.
  4. Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you have found some dishes that you like here. A&J uses the word dim sum rather than "dian xing" because Americans are not familiar with the word "dian xing" Please note that the menu you posted has one non-vegetarian item. The savory rice roll has some dried shredded pork in it.
  5. I was just in Great Wall today and the eatery has reopened. Tiny bakery section, prepared foods, dim sum items, etc.
  6. I recently noticed an article in the Express stating "ask for the Chinese menu" at A&J. The writer is incorrect! Both the weekend Chinese breakfast menu and the regular menu have the exact same items whether you are reading it in Chinese characters or English. Sorry but it annoys me when people don't bother fact checking and just because some Chinese restaurants have items written only in Chinese does not mean we all do this. Thanks for letting me vent
  7. Doesn't look like they're making it to 16 years. Papered windows, "closed for renovation", Chinese restaurant rumor mill said it was sold to Middle Eastern folks so it may not be a Chinese restaurant when it reopens.
  8. Thanks for the responses...ended up at Luigi's. The pasta was actually better than the pizza. Red checked tablecloths, sweet old Italian lady waitress, just what I was looking for.
  9. Looking for an old school, mom 'n pop Italian-American type place. Good chicken parmigiana, spaghetti, etc. Thanks!
  10. I had the bronzino special too. Loved it. The fish was exactly how I like it- skin crisp, flesh tender. It should definitely be on the regular menu.
  11. Does anyone know what the orange bits on top of this duck filled dumpling are? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- crab roe maybe?
  12. The macarons at Leopold's are pretty good.
  13. Quick trip to Miami next Friday and Saturday. I'm thinking Cuban food one night and maybe some seafood the other night...any suggestions? Haven't been in years. I won't have a car so not too far from South Beach would be great. Thanks!
  14. I wanted to take Dad someplace he hadn't been yet for his 60th birthday. It fell on Easter Sunday so I was excited that Inox was actually open for dinner! We received a very warm greeting at the door from the always wonderful Rissa. Inox is so lucky to have her! Between the three of us we ordered the beef carpaccio, butter-poached maine lobster and sablefish for first courses. I'm not sure if my sablefish was supposed to be lukewarm but it was. The fish itself was great though- the caviar was a nice contrast. My mom was very happy with her lobster. Very rich and tender. For entrees we had the lamb, salmon and grouper. The eggplant caponata that came with the lamb had a lot of unique spices and flavors and really complemented the meat nicely. The salmon was cooked as close to rare as possible just as I had ordered it (don't usually order salmon out but it was my attempt at being healthy). Desserts there are very interesting. Definitely a lot of creative elements, like matching a chocolate bread pudding with olive oil sorbet. One particular petit four stood out...it was the pastry chef's take on an oreo and it had bacon/lard in it! Sounds kinda weird but I'm a fan of the Vosges chocolate bar with bacon so I loved this. Went for a tour of the private rooms and kitchen after dinner. People who do corporate events/dinners in the Tysons area should take note of this- nice space and cool amenities. One room had a TV and an iPod dock. (JLK - I'm looking at you and your clients!)
  15. club chasse et peche was delicious but I haven't been in over a year now so take that with a grain of salt.
  16. I love watching movies at AFI- really it's just an excuse to go to Ray's and take advantage of the bar menu. Three courses for $23.95- I don't know how they do it. Michael's Freebird was amazing. Crispy, juicy, tender and an enormous portion. Last night's coconut cream pie had great texture and wasn't overly sweet- yeah! Can't stand when coconut desserts are sickly sweet and fake tasting. I think I'd love it even more if the coconut on top was more toasted and if the crust was as crisp as the one on my friend's key lime pie. That's just a personal preference though.
  17. Genevieve, My family owns A&J so please PM me and we can try to make the logistics work if you want to have your party here. Thanks.
  18. I was at Komi last night and I asked our server if Derek was still there and she said that he still acts as GM, coming in to do paperwork etc but that he's no longer there day to day and "busy with other projects around the city"
  19. In the last 10 days I have dined in every Ray's establishment. Last Tuesday-RTS, Sunday-Hell Burger, last night was my final stop- RTC. My arteries are mad at me but it's so worth it. Watching a movie at AFI is really just an excuse to go to RTC. The bar menu is still an amazing deal- $23.95 got me a cup of clam chowder filled with clams and lots of bacon. The crab royale was a very generous portion, in past visits I thought I detected more of a mustard flavor that helped cut some of the richness. Don't know if the recipe has been tweaked or my memory is just off. Finished with the dark chocolate mousse. If I lived in Silver Spring I'd be here every night.
  20. I asked the management (my parents) and the change to carrots was made to improve presentation, add color to the plate, and provide a more even surface than the chinese cabbage previously used. Glad you still like the buns! Thanks for the feedback.
  21. After carefully studying this thread I was prepared when I walked in for the first time today with butternut. Diablo, recommended, grilled onions, aged cheddar, hell sauce. Based on everyone's advice I was trying not to overload on toppings. I've got to echo the recommendations for the aged cheddar. It's amazing. Next time I'll go back and try with the regular cheddar to compare but it's gonna be hard to beat the aged. As I was waiting for more friends to arrive Michael walked by with a gigantic tray of steaks he was getting ready to grind. I think I'm gonna start spending every Sunday worshipping at the altar of meat- yum.
