  1. whoops! While I'm sorry that it didn't work out exactly as planned, I'm happy that they resolved the matter. There is definitely something to be said for patronizing small businesses - the fact that they know that they need to keep customers happy I hope your wife (and you!) enjoyed the cookies after all of that. I am crazy about them, and I'm not easily-pleased in the cookie department.
  2. We did our civic duty to support local businesses by having a particularly well-earned dinner last night at Dino. I have had the lasagne a few times - last night it was my go-to comfort food, and was just as spectacular as ever. Honestly, at this point, if for some reason it didn't come out the way I have come to expect it, I would probably ask if there was something amiss because my experiences have been consistently right on. And, wow, I'm not sure how I have gotten by in life without ever trying the Nutella Cappuccino. I was very pleased I had saved room for dessert. thanks for the good time with the fizzy reds. the evening was even more fun than we had projected.
  3. It is very *very* good that I didn't know about this when I lived in that neighborhood. My waistband gets a little snug just thinking about it. I'm glad to hear they haven't gone totally to pot!
  4. I've certainly waited more than a few tables that were subject to a compulsory gratuity for larger parties. For the reason stated upthread - large groups can take all or most of one's attention for much of the evening, and groups are notoriously bad tippers. But I never would have dreamt of not making mention of the grat already added when I dropped the check. It was never really difficult to ascertain who was the de facto "head" of the group, and make sure that they understand "service has been included at 18%". If someone left an additional tip (and it happened about half of the time), I always felt secure that there had been no misunderstanding. The one time someone tipped a full 20% on top of the grat-added bill, I chased the party out the door to let them correct it. I remember that night well, because the guy who paid told me, no, no mistake, and thanked me for helping to facilitate a great dinner. The ego boost was as awesome as the extra cash I went home with. No, it wasn't the restaurant's fault that your father made an oversight. Yes, it was pretty crappy of them - on many levels - not to refund the amount that was in error. I have a hard time believing that the server wasn't immediately cognizant that it was a mistake and was just hoping no attention would be drawn to it.
  5. this is all totally fantastic. thanks so much for all the chatter (and the pictures)
  6. Beard's sour cream bread is my Thanksgiving tradition - I get up at 5 to get it started and bring it wherever I go. Makes awesome turkey/cranberry sandwiches the next day. Try it sometime. You'll make new friends, I promise.
  7. oh dear lord do I want Pete's. it's not _close_, but possible maybe
  8. awww, so nice to see all the love for the Crow Bar. d.c.space, for sure. The Company on M street (I actually went to a bar in Georgetown, and I might never live it down!). Back Alley. OK, that was a "night" and not a bar. I'll admit that some of my best underage drinking was done there, but it was really about the awesome and always chilled out crowd. The old 9:30 for friday night happy hours. (if any of you used to do that, I was the quiet girl who always arrived with cookies. perfected my recipe during those years). shit. I feel o-l-d!!!
  9. anyone in the Columbia Heights / Petworth area open? I am climbing the walls.
  10. Uncle Chip's. some of the best cookies around, bar none. and local, too! http://www.unclechipscookies.com/
  11. No fair! I live in DC but work in Alexandria - stopped at the store at 5:45am for just a few things. Packed and pretty barren.
  12. oh for the love of all that is holy, I didn't need to confirm that often-stated notion about how good the burger is. lovely *lovely* evening last night. and not a single disapproving look from the staff when my friend and I couldn't stop our spirited conversation even though everyone was finishing up for the end of the night. thanks, really. we all hate being the last people there, right?? I hadn't eaten off the cafe menu before and have that sinking feeling that I'll be having more than a few solo dinners at the bar.
  13. I'm in the should-I-or-shouldn't-I stage of planning a trip to Istanbul with a gastronome friend. Any additions to this thread would be warmly welcomed.
  14. Order from Haydel's. Or better yet, Maurice.
  15. I stopped on by last Monday for the Project Create happy hour. I really liked what I saw. And my friend's kimchi hotdog looked fantastic. Alas, I'll need to go back when it's not vegan monday.
  16. gah! signals crossed + restaurant week = "I thought you made reservations" "oh, I thought you did". Followed by the inevitable same day call wherein we were politely told oh hell no. my brother just enrolled at college in Emmitsburg, so there will be other trips out there I'm sure.
  17. Is there another night planned at this point? If not, I shall sign myself and a friend up for a shift directly with DCCK - but I really enjoyed going down there with a group a few months ago.
  18. Pete's has never disappointed me for the pizza. I took a friend (we were kids together quite near New Haven) there a few weeks ago and I keep getting text messages telling me that I've created a monster :-) The New Haven is one of those things that I crave if it's been a while, although the straight up plain cheese is hard to pass up.
  19. I send a Zingerman's pannetone to a particular family member every year. Every year, she raves that it's the best one she's had. She never said that when I sent from other places.
  20. Just had a pretty decent week of eats in Key West. After departing at 6am from DCA, we hit a greasy spoon for breakfast/lunch in Key Largo on the way down - Don's Diner. Hot damn, everything I wanted in a diner Benedict - eggs on a huge thick single slab of ham on top of biscuits. Gah. Thanksgiving at Louie's Backyard. A friend said "don't let the name fool you" and was very very right. Swordfish on top of wild rice with pomegranate. My date had the "turkey dinner", and let me tell you I'll be thinking about preparing the confit next year. yum. Brunches at Cammile's, Sarabeth's and Blue Heaven - I was afraid that last one was overrated but the key lime hollandaise on the poached eggs was pretty awesome. A memorable dinner at Nine One Five. Best dish though had to be the hog snapper sandwiches that the proprietor of the small guest house where we were staying made. He caught it spear fishing the previous day and set it up sauteed with a little panko, on french with L&T and a little mustard. Wickedly good. BTW, I highly recommend this tiny place as somewhere to stay for anyone looking for the quiet part of the island. Atlantis House. The fresh key lime pie as a departure morning breakfast was pretty swell as well.
  21. I used to live a few blocks from there. It was pretty, but I never went back once I learned that Harar Mesob across the street had way better food.
  22. A local group I know has a monthly "dinner club", similar but not the same. House rotates, host prepares the whole shebang. Guests chip in $5 to defray host's food cost and promise to RSVP firmly for planning purposes. Anything goes as per the host's choice. I have a coworker who does something similar to your dad's gig - they choose a theme and each bring a dish.
