  1. I hope Brian the baker chimes in to respond to your question but I'll give you my take:A cupcake should be light and airy, have a very rich taste and though it is cake does not exactly have the same mouth feel as a piece of cake from a larger cake.
  2. I feel your pain. I don't understand this place. The scary thing is that it is John Kerry's favorite place (at least other than Cafe Milano). Hmmm.. Not a fan of Bush but at least he and I share a hankering for good Tex-Mex!
  3. Them there are serious fighting words. Fried Cheese Curds are Wisconsin's gift to the world other than beer, custard, and other cheeses. :-)
  4. I am so excited that you have tried El Charrito Caminante. I noticed it on Sunday and was going to try it this week. Gracias!!!
  5. See not only am I a trademark attorney, I am blessed to have spent some time in Wisconsin so I know what custard is. But if I were merely a Southern Belle I would think puddin'. The name is bad. It is sad. It does not do the place or its product justice. Hmmm.... BTW, anyone know where to get good cheese curds around here... Doctor let me know if I can help in your new venture!
  6. That name is actually pretty sad. In my humble opinion, they had a chance to be really creative AND campy. The Custard Place in Del Ray could be killed if another ice cream/custard place opens in the area. That is, in the South we customarily have ordered "a coke" when asked what we want to drink, to which the server responded "what kind." So, imagine when a friend says "let's meet at that custard place in Del Ray" you'll have to respond "which one." Also, the name does not indicate that they sell anything other than custard. Their baked goods are fabulous and could create an independent revenue category for the place. Shame. Branding is so important and can be fun. Just My Humble Opinion
  7. I was not that impressed with Taqueria Poblano. I thought the food was heavily laden with salt. The salsa for which they charge was mediocre at best, the chips not so good. Oh, and it does not equate to a bargain though it is considered a bargain restaurant in DC. I do forget about the well dressed burrito. Wonder if they are open on Saturdays? Has anyone been to Taco Baja on Route 50 near the Greatlands Target? Curious...
  8. "Chipotle, numerous area locations. OK, let’s get the bad news out of the way up front. This is a chain. Even worse, it is a chain owned by McDonald’s corporation, the fount of culinary evil. That being said, it is pretty good. Fresh and relatively authentic Mexican food, you tell them how to put together your meal. The salsa is genuinely spicy. The carnitas are the best meat. Not much choice, but you don’t need it. I’d rather eat here than almost any other Mexican place on this list." AAAARGH. I love Tex-Mex on weekends for lunch. Last week had a very disappointing meal at Los Poblanos so I decided to see what Tyler Cowan recommended this week. I can get great Tex-Mex in Memphis, okay not as good as San Antonio but good enough. Why in DC would one of the better places be a chain owned by Ronald McD? Especially since our administration is so heavily dominated by Texans???? AAAARGH. EDITED: Looking for suggestions by the way... places I have tried and crossed off the list: MexiCali Blues, Burrito Brothers, the place in the food court at Ballston (loved for a long time but got sick a couple of times), Chevy's (chain), Rio Grande (chain)... Edited again because I am shocked at how far away the good places listed on Cowan's list are from where I live in Virginia. 30 to 40 minutes... AAARGG
  9. This is in response to DonRocks playing devils(food) advocate. I drove past CakeLove today as I have many times. When I first moved to DC I thought for sure that CakeLove would be a favorite of mine based on the hype I had heard. I gave it multiple shots. On two occassions I actually turned in my cupcake to request something, um, more edible while at LoveCafe. Allowing a cakelove product to get to room temp before eating does not take away the texture that is oddly similar to cake that has been frozen. Oh, wait they don't freeze their products, only keep them very very cold. JMHO
  10. Perhaps because I don't really drink that much or that often, inexpensive margaritas don't make a place a good deal for me. I think close to $4 per taco is expensive even for fish tacos. Granted, we had an egg dish and the chicken mole, an order of chips and sodas. The bill was close to $30 not including tip. Still, didn't seem like a bargain for Tex-Mex. Nor did I think it that impressive. I like Los Tios much better. But that is just my personal preference.
  11. A better description of the place could not be made. Last night my family descended on Clare & Don's just as the Clarendon Fest ended. They had been swamped all day and the bar area was still packed. The servers were great and patient with my crazy bunch (people coming and going, toddlers running around in the back room around our table). Oh and the food, well I think it is above average for what it is: Glorified bar food with a beach theme. Their blackened grouper sandwich is as good as I have had in Florida and I had the crabcake sandwich last night in which there was NO filler. And the prices are awesome. edited to remove the evil triple space!
  12. Having had many yummy meals at Los Tios in Del Ray, I switched to TP this weekend. I have some questions: 1) how is this place on the cheap eats lists? 2) shouldn't salsa that is not free be insanely good or at least above average? 3) how much salt is used in the verde mole? Hmmmmm....
  13. Edited... I PMed people for directions... thanks...
  14. Tried to go on Monday night before a 9:30 show... it was still early 7 p.m. and they were closed. No sign regarding hours or opening... anybody know their hours?
  15. oooh no bathroom. gross. Yeah, she is taking advantage of two fads... it won't last
  16. I am with you regarding the crepes... When I asked about the paltry fillings the owner said that if there was more nutella it would be too sweet. I was starving and ate it. Should have had more nutella and banana! She has a crowd but I think it is the location.
  17. Armands Pizza on Cap. Hill is donating all gross proceeds on Tues. Sept 13 to the Red Cross...
  18. Good question... I think my main disappointment was the feeling that my mouth could serve as a salt lick long after the meal was over. The fake crab in the dishes also a disappointment. The poor quality of the dumplings not so satisifying. Oh they should not have adopted the fad of the crab ragoon. Yeah, not so good.
  19. City Lights of China in Dupont. My mom is visiting and one of her friends insisted that it was the best Chinese in the city. I had said no to the other places her friends from home had recommended so I thought how bad can City Lights actually be. Well, it is just not worth the calories. 'Nuff said.
  20. Okay... so excited!!! Can't wait for Wednesday... the question is whether I should take my Mom there on Thursday in lieu of lunch at the Corcoran... hmmmmmmmm
  21. You know I avoid chains at all costs. So in some places and at certain times, I am a real pain with whom to catch a meal. My mom likes to say to me that it won't be my last meal so what does it matter. Oh it matters... I hate paying for bad food and/or service. This thread is great. Thanks! I feel better, but keep the rants coming...
  22. Gepettos in Bethesda... basic pizza not well done... looked good but did not taste good... AND the two servers were fighting with each other over a disputed tip! Crazy. Don, if you don't like my topic feel free to take it down... but I had to vent. I am tired of giving money for bad food and service. Yuck.
  23. I am sitting at my desk enjoying some perfect watermelon. A glance at the calendar tells me that soon watermelon will not be perfect. I thought it would be fun to have an ode of sorts to those things we all love to eat only when in season. What will you miss when summer is over?
  24. The owners of Clare and Don's do not currently own Mexicali Blues. They started it and sold it a few years ago. They also no longer own Big Belly Deli though they did start the deli. They do continue to own Lazy Sundae which was their first venture.
  25. Yes, that is exactly what they are! www.cafeatlantico.com has the full menu listed. Must go back for the arugla salad... yum
