  1. I will post more later... but I am eating a great chicken sandwich in a wonderfully live space right now... :-) Okay, I am home now and I did not get any mayo on my keyboard. :-) The space is wonderful. I hope they can manage the size and guarantee table turnover. I was there for nearly 1 1/2 hours and if I didn't have somewhere to go I would have stayed! My sandwich was really yummy. The chicken was good but the avocado made it even better. My friend had a hamburger he said was very good. They don't have fries though... interesting. Oh, the manager brought us our food. He visited for a few minutes. Apparently they are aware of the service issues. I look forward to many return visits.
  2. Taking one for the team, I ventured to Sticky Fingers (1904 18th St. NW in the basement). Somebody had to do it. Other than a terrible location (just hard to find at first and parking is a bear), I am glad I took on the task. I had a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting. All of the products are vegan and I have to say I did not feel guilty after I consumed the treat. The chocolate was rich without being too sweet. I am sure they use whole wheat flour or a mix, but the texture was very nice. For the good of the research, I took a bannana chocolate chip muffin to eat later as a treat. Well, it is later and I was hungry on the way back to Virginia, so... the muffin had a nice taste, it was very heavy though. I liked the top as it was well done, a bit crunchy. Because I did not feel the guilt I do after a cupcake from Randolph's, I'd probably choose the Sticky Fingers cupcake.
  3. Yeah, I agree about the ads. I actually posted the link before I investigated. However, I love www.menupages.com for New York.
  4. I rely on a service in New York called menupages. I love it because I can research a place before making reservations or when looking for a particular dish. Happily, DCist has alerted me that http://www.menupix.com/dc/ has launched. Enjoy! Happy Saturday....
  5. Oh yesterday must have been a day for art followed by a meal at Corduroy. After an evening at the Corcoran, a friend and I headed to the bar at Corduroy for what was supposed to be a drink and light bite.... Uh, okay... First impression: the restaurant is disarming in that you do not expect such a beautiful space in a Four Point branded hotel. The server seemed to be new as we asked about the wines by the glass and his response was "I know they are all from France." Well, alrighty... luckily I decided that his response was a good reason for me to find Rissa and ask for recommendations. I had never met Rissa but based on the fact that many on this board treat the restaurant like their meal plan, I felt like I already knew her. She was very gracious and recommended two wines for us, I had a Pinot Noir, my friend a Shiraz blend. We both liked them (I don't generally do wine but it was cold last night) After much time discussing our "light bite," we ended up ordering the goat cheese/potato dish and the oysters on the 1/2 shell as starters and split the seared tuna entree. (I knew I should have taken a menu or written our dishes down!). The goat cheese/potato dish had a fabulous texture as a result of the combination of the fried potato shreds with the soft yet still firm goat cheese. The cheese itself was very favorable in taste. The oysters were fresh and very tasty. I am not sure what the "sauce" was but it had apple in it if I recall correctly. The tuna... ohhhh. Lately, I have not been a fan of tuna at restaurants after having been burned on quality a few times. I am glad my friend chose the dish. It was a beautiful piece of fish prepared with just enough flair to highlight the quality of the fish. We ordered dessert. It was my friends birthday so we chose two chocolate desserts! The chocolate tart with bannana and the saybonne (spelling) were our choices. We made our order and then the my friend's phone rang, her husband was on his way to meet us with some friends. You have to be kidding me.... I love dessert and I love chocolate. Those were probably the two best desserts I have had at a restaurant in a long time. So I asked Rissa who the pastry chef was.... drum roll... the Chef!!! WOW. Kudos Chef. Oh my friend's husband arrived with his friend. They coveted our dessert. We had to share just a bit... The guys decided that they wanted dinner too... They ordered a cheeseburger with fries and the spring rolls. They reported the spring rolls were great. I can report that the next time I am craving french fries, that Corduroy will be my destination. The guys had the chocolate tart for dessert. I look forward to returning sooner than later to Corduroy. Thanks for a great evening.
  6. You read my mind. I had typed the exact same thing and decided not to post it. I was at a Balducci's tonight and they had a range of cupcakes. $1.70 each. Didn't try one but I am willing to bet that they are better than Cakelove.
  7. One of my favorite lunch spots anywhere is the Museum of the American Indian. Should have thought of it...
  8. So why is the soup delicious if the noodles are overdone? This is what kills me about Breadline... nothing is consistent, not even in the same dish.
  9. Jennifer's comment made me think of the PERFECT place... The cafe at the Corcoran. Talk about convenient, not too expensive and totally unique! http://www.corcoran.org/visit/cafe.htm That's what I'd do... even though I still think Ben's is a good idea!!!
  10. Why do you need a whole restaurant? Having planned many an event, if your company wants a restaurant to not serve other patrons it is going to be very pricey. Restaurants generally do multiple seatings an evening so closing requires a high penny. An alternative is to find a space that can be used with catering. For example, I would consider a venue like the Spy Museum or the Women's Museum. Both can accomodate groups and allow catering. I have not been, but know that Charlie Palmers is used for private functions all the time. They must have a separate room for such events. Just my thoughts...
  11. I don't think Kinkeads at lunch is that much more than any of the other white table cloth restaurants you are considering (except maybe Old Ebbits). I have had a few lunches there, they were okay.. not really my favorite.... I still think Ben's would be fun. Totally throw your guests off guard! I know that when I am entertaining out of town guests, I often consider what food is readily available where they live. So, if they are from Florida I probably wouldn't go to DC Coast. Just an idea..
  12. I love Cafe Atlantico!!! Second this one... No, Old Ebbits is not super touristy. It is actually quite fun to go for business as well as tourist lunches because you do see Famous for DC people.
  13. Ben's Chilli Bowl. Love the place. Great DC history and not your typical place. I don't like it, but how about Breadline. I seem to be the odd person out. What about Zola? A great space, right next to Spy Museum. The food is sufficient. I had a great lunch at DC Coast can't go wrong. But I'd go to Old Ebbits instead ONLY because it is a pretty cool place considering how DC it is... why come to DC but for the DCness of the city? Wouldn't go to Jaleo unless these are good friends. CrescentFresh is right, not everybody likes to share. Oh and these days I seem to go to Kaz Sushi for lunch a lot.... yum. Let us know where you decide to go...
  14. You know, I met a friend for drinks at Bistro Bis after she finished a long day at the office just a few weeks ago. She had a difficult time finding something to eat on the menu, finally choosing onion soup. I had eaten so I waited for desserts. Wanting something lite, little and to share all at the same time, I chose the cookie assortment. It was TERRIBLE. Not only was the presentation the pits, the cookies were not worth eating. Okay, I ate them anyway but... come on...
  15. I am lucky to live in a neighborhood with great music venues. I am luckier that one of them has GREAT food. I have eaten at Iota probably more times than any other white table cloth restaurant in the city. I can't believe I have not written a post, but last night's service and food really requires acknowledgement. Here goes. The menu at Iota changes on a fairly regular basis to incorporate seasonal dishes as well as "high end" versions of pub fare. I have had excellent salads, including the portabella capresse salad on the current menu, a great veggie burger, and yummy pasta dishes over the past few months. Last night we started with the trio of spreads appetizer. The tapenade was great. The tomato spread yummy. I am not a hummus fan so no comment. I had a special as my entree, a cod dish that was really well prepared. My friend ordered another special that turned out not to be what she thought and they gladly replaced it with something else. Come over to Clarendon.
  16. TITLE 16 > CHAPTER 9 > § 748 Prev | Next § 748. Expenditure of appropriations for propagation of food fishes Release date: 2005-08-01 Appropriations for propagation of food fishes shall not be expended for hatching or planting fish or eggs in any State in which, in the judgment of the Secretary of the Interior, there are not adequate laws for the protection of the fishes, nor in any State in which the United States Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service and his duly authorized agents are not accorded full and free right to conduct fish-cultural operations, and all fishing and other operations necessary therefor, in such manner and at such times as is considered necessary and proper by the said director or his agents. :-) okay so I'm sure I'm wrong but this is DC!
  17. My new favorite breakfast place in the area... Ben's Chilli Bowl... they even have turkey sausage!!!! And the history can't be beat...
  18. Fried chicken French Fries/Mashed Potatoes Corn Cornbread/Dinner Rolls
  19. Wow I go away for a few days and they increase the prices! Oh and not only is Port City Java opening in Eastern Market the space formerly home to the pet store is also going to be a coffee place from what I have been told. Um... that is a lot of coffee...
  20. I have a dear friend who is an incredible baker. We have discussed opening a bakery (in a totally different market) on many occassions. Apparently bakeries are hard businesses to run, low margins and long hours. I, however, love being a patron of good bakeries... so, Jennifer maybe we should come up with a business model, though my vote is Clarendon...
  21. Beware though... their decorated ones can run up to $2.50 per cupcake... I was shocked! They are the same size as the plain frosted ones... delicious but not worth $2.50! Especially when Crumb in New York offers a cupcake for about $3.00 that is twice as big, more decorated and even more yummy...Also, I think DC could use a good bakery in a pedestrian friendly area but the perfect place may very well be either in Clarendon or Courthouse on the Orange line in NoVA... why? because it is easy to access the area by car and metro... there is a ton of foot traffic during the day and in the evening... just my thoughts...
  22. I have walked by it and wondered about the place... Now I know it is not a paint your own pottery place with wi-fi access! A true bakery?
  23. I am lame... I was trying to make a point... just not sure how to make it, has something to do with the Watergate, politics and money...
  24. Welcome... I think a Keller priced restaurant could do well in DC with the technology/government contract/lobbying money floating around the area... But for the most part (there are exceptions like Mini-Bar, CityZen et al) the high end food around here is very steak and potato...
