  1. Who needs foodtv when you can have a birds eye view of the kitchen at Cafe Atlantico? Not only was the food really good last night but the entertainment was also great! My friend and I were often transfixed by the kitchen activity. The food: Mojitos were great. I asked the server which one I should order and he suggested the house Mojito. It was very good but next time I am getting the Magic Mojito, it is just too pretty! Tableside guac was so fresh and good. I don't know why I can't make it that good at home? The conch fritters were not what I expected. They were more like stuffed hushpuppies than conch fritters. The "ravioli" were fun though, yummy avocado filling. Two starters comprised my main course: the jicama/arugula salad and the tuna ceviche. The salad was an incredible mixture of tastes and textures. The salad was actually rather deconstructed in that what I would normally consider the base, the arugula, was actually more of a topping and that which I would consider a topping was the base, sweet corn. Not only was it incredibly fresh, I know for a fact that I could not recreate it at home. The tuna ceviche was fabulous. My friend had the salmon. It was good too. Overdid the desserts... tres leches AND the chocolate dessert. The chocolate cake was a bit dry but who cares it was still really good! Can't wait to go back. Will request the same ringside table!
  2. Umm... I liked the fries... they had a slight seasoning on them... though they were definitely out of the bag so to speak.. but that is sort of the charm as it is supposed to be a "beach shack"
  3. I have become addicted (unfortunately for my hips) to the ravioli the pasta place in Eastern Market makes. The fillings are delicious. I am not a pasta expert but they taste really good.
  4. Yum... Clare and Don's is fabulous. I had a great lunch there today, a blackened grouper sandwich that rocked my world. The menu is fun and the food very fresh. The restaurant is right by the Clarendon metro station.
  5. Great suggestions guys! Thanks... Clydes is one of the couples coming favorite haunts (they went to Georgetown) and Old Ebbits is a total DC place... I'll look into the others as well... Yeah!
  6. Because I like the people I am inviting...
  7. To the trusty members of DR.com, I pose the following challenge, for which I am sure you can handle: I want to host a dinner on a Sunday evening after all of the tourist activities in DC are done for the day. There will be 14 full grown people and 6 not so full grown people attending. Some of the full grown people with the wee ones live in Maryland, others in NoVA. For a variety of reasons, I cannot host the evening at home. So, I need to find a place to gather this random group. A casual place would be best (kids range from new born to 7). Anything but sushi would be appropriate for this group because I am sure that I could work something out for the picky kids just about anywhere. A "typical" DC place would be great too because 4 of the group are visiting. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas. Nancy
  8. That is so cool. My next visit will be this weekend before they close for the much needed/deserved vacation!
  9. I have tried most of the items on the menu (except for red meat/pork dishes)... guess my luck isn't that good... Oh, some of the breads are good but Randolphs does a much better job imho.
  10. Great idea... I will... what a gem of a place! thanks..
  11. Panda, I love your name! BUT, I don't get Breadline. As I wrote in my earlier post, I want to love it. However, I have never been able to get consistent food (yes service is consistent) at the place. Hmmmm... Nancy
  12. Has anybody had dinner at CK on Sunday nights? Do you all think it is a realistic choice for a party of 14 adults and 7 kids? Probably isn't but I have to ask...
  13. Actually Magnolia aren't even close to being the best cupcakes in New York. I am a fan of a place called Crumb in New York. Expensive, oh of course but truely incredible. When I was in New York for work earlier this year I took some to a client and made quite the impression. Yummm... and I think Cake Love is nothing but a marketing sucess... wouldn't wish any of their baked goods on my worst enemy. I tried to love Cake Love but come on, quality is key
  14. Capital Icebox, Go back and read my posting. I went back once since my posting with a client (they chose) and all of our meals were fairly BAD. I refuse to patron a place that does not have quality control. And it is the mess the other post described. I even had a piece of chicken in the chicken salad that was not thoroughly cooked. The bread is not consistently baked. Sometimes the crusts are overly thick and occassionally I have purchased loafs that did not stay fresh very long. I am not a fan of Breadline. Nancy
  15. On Friday night, I ate a fun dinner at Saint Ex with a friend. We ordered a bunch of small plates: Bruschetta (the tuna is yummy) Grilled Calamari Heirloom Tomato salad Sweet potato fries grilled asparagus drum roll... GRILLED PEACHES with a balsamic reduction!!!! After dinner we ran into the Chef (Bart ________?) and thanked him for the meal. It was much better than your average "pub grub"
  16. Introduced a bunch of friends to Colorado Kitchen this morning for brunch. I arrived early to stand in line. All those who arrived before 11 mingled pleasantly while we waited. So, the doors open at 11 a.m. Everybody was seated promptly. My friends had gotten lost and were just then parking. The restaurant nicely seated me even though they ask you to wait for the whole party to arrive. I ordered a six plate of donuts in a show of good faith. Oh the donuts... worthy of a song. We ended up ordering 9 total for a five top. Is that bad? Oh and those chicken sausage. yummmm Service was great. The food delicious. A perfect place for Sunday brunch. Thank you Chef...
  17. Question: Would Corduroy be a good place to take a client for lunch? I need a fairly quiet place for us to talk. Thanks!
  18. I had the strangest meal there this winter. My date and I each ordered an entree, he had a meat dish and I had a fish dish. Neither of our entrees came with a vegetable. His had a potato side and mine had a grain. There were no sides on the menu. I thought the presentation was rather odd and incomplete. I asked the server about it and he said that is how the dishes were always prepared. I also thought the food was rather salty. Anywho, I haven't been back though I know people quite like the space and food. Oh well... edited to correct my poor spelling...
  19. I think it is unrealstic to expect a small restaurant to offer a full menu for "cut rate" prices. There is nothing wrong with a restaurant choosing to have a set menu for a special event. You don't have to eat there during RW... go for a real meal... better way to judge a restaurant anyway
  20. Randolphs has fabulous breakfast pastries.
  21. Yum. Had lunch today at Belga. Had an incredible salad. But the dessert sampler was so much fun. Two mini creme brulee's, choc ice cream, a mini flourless choc cake, a mini choc mousse. We had asked for raspberrry sorbet as the "ice cream" so they brought us some. YUMMMMMMM. I want to go back for a real meal. (i.e. not salad)... Oh, their restaurant week menu looks really good. At lunch the dessert is going to be a cold fruit soup.
  22. I have had computer problems... thrilled to see someone post about Cornucopia... I went last Sunday... the owner is very nice but the sorbets are nicer... unbelievable sorbet... had three scoops: coconut, mango and another one... delicious...
  23. Updated version of my tast of summer salad 2005: Cucumbers from Marshall Farms Yellow Tomatoes from another vendor Basil from the amazing greens vendor at Eastern Market Fresh Mozzarella from the pasta vendor in Eastern Market salt and pepper YUM. Too bad we can't can this salad. Would be delicious in January.
