  1. Have you tried Fresh off the Roast? Petworth's own fresh roasted coffee! I know it's available at Qualia, on Georgia and Randolph. http://www.freshofftheroast.com/qualia.html
  2. Both of these are available at the Red Derby.
  3. I believe he's talking about Barry, who is also the owner and has been there all along. I like the place, although I think it costs a bit much for what it is, so we haven't been there in a while.
  4. OK, dinner? I love the nalasneki (cheese - I've never had the chicken.) I don't like sauerkraut, but a friend who does really enjoys the Bigos. The husband says go for the tilapi, because the side of beet risotto is the best thing ever. He also recommends the salmon, because he cannot resist brussel sprouts. Actually, he really likes all the fish, and decides based on what side he is in the mood for. The pate and the veggie caviar are nice. In general, we're really enjoying the fall menu. I note, the glogg is tasty, but is heavy on the vodka, so I've given it up. The hangover from more than one is simply too much. Brunch? Lunch? I could look at those menus and comment too.
  5. I have. I live in the neighborhood, and am there regularly. What kind of info are you looking for? The fall menu is new, and good.
  6. They have it at the (new) Petworth location too. It is quite nice.
  7. So I want sherry - specifically, Sandeman "Dry Don." Has anyone seen it in the US? Can anyone get it for me?
  8. Help! Everything looks different and I can't find the view new posts link and the view new content link says there are 500 pages of new content (since Sunday?!) and I am so so confused. ETA: Nevermind. Found the upgrade thread and all is now clear.
  9. We're waiting, those of us just up the street. Waiting! Seriously, welcome to the neighborhood. Sincerely, Sarah (a big fan of your former restaurant)
  10. And indeed he and his wonderful crew did - y'all were great, and the neighbors loved it. Thanks so much. We'll be saying nice things about you and your staff for a long long time.Sarah
  11. When I was 17 and fresh out of HS, trying to decide what to do next, I got a job cooking breakfast at a McD's. It was long ago and far away, and before the era of the biscuit. And I had a cheap manager who under-ordered English muffins, consistently, fearing having 2 left over more than she feared an hour and a half without any McMuffins. I regularly had the dream of looking for muffins, looking for muffins, looking for muffins, never finding them, customers yelling all the while, and waking up in my closet surrounded by all the boxes I had moved while looking for muffins. (Sadly, I am serious here.) I was glad to leave that job. More recently, I dream of my years, also long ago now, waiting tables and tending bar. You know how some people have that dream where they discover it's the end of the semester and they haven't been to class yet? I've had that ONCE, despite having spent far more time in school than is good for me. My anxiety dreams take place in a restaurant, not one I ever worked in, but the same one every time. I'm the only one in the dining room, the only one to cover the bar, there's no busboy, no dishwasher, there's one cook, and we are way in the weeds. It gets worse as it goes. Now for non-anxiety dreams of restaurants? (And bars too) Indeed, it is obvious to me that my brain has noticed that my stomach takes it to a lot of restaurants and bars. Restaurants and bars are often featured as the setting of my dreams. Sadly, my dreams are scripted by Salvador Dali, and as such, the settings become unrecognizable fairly quickly, as the elephant in the corner melts, the bomb behind the mirror turns into a ultra-blue sonic mushroom cloud, and the jukebox follows me around the room, singing the soundtrack of my mind. Daydreams now.. that's another, long long post.
  12. Get takeout at Vace in Cleveland Park, take it up the block to Aroma, eat it at the bar with beer (the wine is WEAK).
  13. At Moroni and Brothers, in Petworth. http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?showtopic=9467 Failing that (and I warn you, much as I love my neighborhood, we are not "tourist-ready"), I understand that Red Rocks is currently making decent pizza again. http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?showtopic=5212 Failing both of those, Paradiso (Go to the one in Georgetowm, for the beer and the larger dining area.)
  14. He did a tasting at Cleveland Park Wine and Liquor last Saturday. They are carrying his stuff, as is Pearson's. Calvert-Woodley is falling behind here!
  15. For pick up yourself, I'd go for Litteri
  16. Hi Eben. I've eaten, several times, in your dining room - the husband is from Yardley and his parents love the Yardley Inn. You do a nice job.
  17. Ben's does breakfast, as does Florida Avenue Grill. So does Saint's Paradise. Busboys does too. Domku does breakfast on Thursdays and Fridays, but they don't start early enough any more - think it's 10 AM now. Moroni does breakfast, although I think it's mostly Salvadoran style. Same for Taqueria Distrito Federal. There are a couple places in the Florida Ave Market that do breakfast - I haven't done them, but K-Youngs comes recommended. I'm guessing Market Lunch is too far off the route? (Man, some days, you just have to miss the Little Giant.)
  18. I dunno about other people, but the time frame would affect my responses - you know, "What's a good place to have Christmas Eve dinner?" is a VERY different question than "What's a good place to have a fancy french dinner on j random Saturday night in the spring?" And the truth is, advising someone to go to places that will NOT be at their best due to crowds, specials events, etc, is not helpful.
  19. Indeed, Ward 7 in general, and the Greater Deanwood area in particular are often overlooked, and have had plenty of issues, but is there a neighborhood that hasn't? While there are some problems, there are also a lot of wonderful long-time resident families in the neighborhood who really love their neighborhood and work hard to make and keep it a great place. For those of you interested in getting to know the area, besides the obvious (go eat at the new places and meet the neighbors), I note that there is a DC Neighborhood Heritage Trail in development for the Greater Deanwood neighborhood. It will be installed in the next few months, and would be an ideal way to get a decent overview of the neighborhood. (As I'm working on the project, I was rather selfishly hoping that the new place would be open before the trail went in, so that I would have a place other than Denny's to eat while in the neighborhood.)
  20. 1789 is open that night, but may be fully booked already.
  21. Stock has been made. Not decided yet what to do with the roasted vegetables or the last of the asparagus/mushroom stuff. And the turkey has become a pan of (frozen) enchiladas, a small tub of cold shredded turkey for sandwich making for tomorrow (small sandwiches, as we have small rolls left over) with some stuffing and cranberry sauce. Oh, and the last bit of turkey is frying, in the form of taquitos, right now for tonight's dinner. The last of the pies will be tonight's dessert. There were fewer leftovers this year than in past years. I think this is good.
  22. While I am too late for the original poster, Domku would be a good option for weekend lunches. They do breakfast early, then add the lunch menu for brunch time.
  23. Yes - W Domku in Petworth. From her website at http://www.domkucafe.com/Events.html A Very Partisan Election Watch (and we make no apologies about it) Join us for this year's historic election night as the returns roll in. Yes, Domku will actually have a TV for this night (it's true) because it’s that important. Watch beer prices fall as Obama’s electoral wins rise. If we’re lucky, by the end of the night, they might be almost free. And don't forget to VOTE before you come in. We'll be open for as long as we can take it. She's also having food specials.
  24. Indeed - club soda at a table, especially with no other drinks, is effectively a coke. And were I alone at the bar drinking seltzer and nothing else, also agreed. Now, when there are 6 of us, 5 drinking beer/wine/booze and one drinking sprite, the one drinking sprite rarely gets charged and I very much appreciate that. (Our non-drinker tips quite well, as he appreciates the pop.) It's just that it's happened several times recently, at 3 different places, where I order a drink with a seltzer on the side (and often food too), and the club soda is getting charged at $1.50 a glass, and it does baffle me.
