  1. Well, last week I went up 270 to 15. As they build, it is getting more interstate-like, but it isn't there yet. If you want the really slow road, you can go up Georgia, which is route 97 and goes all the way to Gettysburg, then get on 15.
  2. Well, the Shamrock is always packed, but I have never gone in. The Cozy, also in Thurmont, is also always packed and is best regarded as a period piece - fascinating, but the food is only so-so. Lots of farm stands - Those are always good. (I just made this drive earlier this week. Seriously, the farm stands had a lot of awesome stuff.)
  3. We tried this recipe the other day. Aside from the odd blob of solidified sugar at the bottom of the bowl when we were done, it was a success. Now I just need to figure out how to can them.
  4. Those of us in Petworth disagree! OK, Domku is a walk from the metro, so that might not work. But they do lunch a few days a week, and that makes me happy.I think Sweet Mango does lunch too (tasty jerk chicken.) Also, we have a new Sala Thai on top of the metro. Not my favorite, but others like it. As for Columbia Heights, there's a ThaiTanic. Commonwealth does lunch. So does Taqueria Distrito Federal. (Again, this makes me happy.)
  5. I use the dough scraps for something like rugelach. Never had any complaints. Never had any left for any length of time, either.
  6. It does. She uses it for her peach pie. http://projects.washingtonpost.com/recipes/2008/07/16/perfect-peach-pie/ That's from one of the articles where they got chefs to teach people to cook. Cherry, pecan, and peach, all with the cream cheese crust.
  7. I ride past this place on the bus home every night, and have yet to stop. Should I? What should I get?
  8. There is one of these in my house (the husband could not resist). It's interesting, and the most important thing to remember is that the stuff is cask strength - so don't drink it undiluted unless you like to suffer that way.
  9. Every time I read about this place, I find myself singing the Clancy Brothers song "Moses Ri-Tooral-I-Ay"
  10. Say hi next time. And it was potluck day at church, so I got to eat WELL before the game, so I didn't have to make the hard choices today. I miss the days that I worked close to Vace and could easily procure and bring along subs.
  11. I find it fascinating. Having been through this in the past, and being quite certain that it is in my future, I am very interested to see someone else's experience, and steal your (much better than my) ideas. As for breakfast - Angel food cake with fruit?
  12. "what is wrong with sounding like Gillian?" Well, nothing, if you want to alienate all your customers. But if you want to continue to serve the masses as well as the discerning, sounding like Gillian will be a problem.
  13. You know, I used to love that place. Still would, were it not for the fact that so many of the great great great staff they have had over the years have gone. And no, it's not just the normal moving on, it's (IMO) because of the manager. It's too bad, but I am sure that we are not the only folks who have given up going there in the last few years.
  14. I made a peanut butter pie for dessert that night.
  15. Huh. I had that too, diagnosed and treated in early 05. Although I have been lucky - since 07 they have done my followup with thyrogen shots rather than with the evil diet. Oh how I hate that diet. HATE that diet. I also hate the hypothyroidism they have required with the scans. Although when you're that run down from the hypo, you're not hungry! (Then again, despite the stupid diet and no appetite, I gained major weight from the hypo state last time.) I learned to make sorbet when I had to do the diet in July and couldn't have ice cream. It goes well with angel food cake. Homemade hummus and pita worked well. Roasted chicken was good. Fruit was good. Anyhow, I'm interested in the food diary because I will have to do this again some time, and I intend to steal every good idea you have.

    Safeway

No, that is the Sandinista Safeway.
  17. Because it is directly across the street from the Silver, and so you can have dinner and a (great) movie. Because Nick (who I haven't seen in far too long) is cool.
  18. Or Rochester. I actually haven't been to the Syracuse location. But the one in the old subway station in Rochester is good. And a neat space.
  19. We used to like the 19th St location. That's long gone now though. I have also been to Rossyln (I think? Maybe Crystal City?) when a friend had a rehearsal dinner (!) there. It was bad. Oh, and I've been to the Annapolis location. Also not what I remembered from 19th St. I want Dinosaur here.
  20. Enchiladas. Tamales. Soup. Twice baked potatoes.
  21. You could also try the poultry places in Eastern Market - I think they have geese.
  22. Oooh. Do we know who is going to carry this?
  23. I like Ayesha's - especially the Musakan.
