  1. Thanks for the advice. Aspiring restauranteurs please note that this city has a dearth of pan/deep dish pizza.
  2. I've had good luck reheating the cheese sauce I use for mac and cheese, slowly over a low flame. Similar ingredients, but more milk and butter, and no beer.
  3. I agree completely. I had them once a few weeks ago and they were beyond salty and had a weird texture. What was so wrong with the old fries?
  4. Any good (or even marginal) pan or deep dish pizza in DC or NOVA? I had Armands once. It was terrible (I never say that about pizza), but it could have just been that location...
  5. Yes its a buffet - with pizza, eggs, homefries, sausage, bacon, french toast among many other things last time I went.
  6. I'd second Liberty over Whitlows - much better food for (last time I checked) the same price. Liberty has standard brunch fare plus things like pizza for the young picky eaters.
  7. The $5 'dogs they are serving from 4-7pm have ranged from really good (the Kasekrainer) to completely worth trekking through a wet blizzard for (the short rib Lyonaise). Buns are just as delicious as Lyon Hall/Liberty's bread, and are buttered and toasted.
  8. Where can I find peeled garlic (besides costco, BJs, et al.)?
  9. Eventide meets the proximity, quietness, service, food (admittedly I haven't eaten upstairs in a while) and non-RW requirements - and there are still reservations available for Friday night. Tallula is participating in RW.
  10. I think the Verizon Center Hooters is the appropriate restaurant to patronize before a monster truck rally.
  11. Not sure if they have NFL ticket, but Orso only has one TV. Its visible from pretty much every bar seat, but not the restaurant. A good spot for a smaller group. Nearby, Blancas has a massive TV visible to most of the restaurant and I thought about going there recently to watch a game. Never seen a sporting event on it, but I'm not sure I've been in there when one would be on and I think they'd be willing to change the channel.
  12. Sorry, didn't notice that. I found Dinic's to basically be on par with Taylor. If you are thinking about pizza - I'd search for Philadelphia on http://slice.seriouseats.com/. Most that looked good to me were down in South Philly and I didn't have time to get to them.
  13. That's where I stayed - barbuzzo is close and open for lunch. Also the same group's market store Grocery is good for a quick breakfast or the gelato store a few doors down (Capogiro) had H&H bagels in the morning.
  14. Ate at the new Barbuzzo twice recently, its a great choice if you are staying near City Center. The Uovo pizza was really rich and really good - toppings (egg, truffle, brussel sprouts, guanciale, caciocavallo, fior di latte and a 'special' white sauce) being the best part and the crust a serviceable cross between liberty tavern and orso/pupatella. Had two regular dishes; bone marrow and a pork pasta dish, both were on the larger side for tapas portions. I liked both, but probably would order something else if I went again...nearly everything on the menu sounded interesting. Pretty crowded both times, don't expect to walk in and sit...unless you are a party of two and willing to sit at the bar or counter in front of the kitchen (which is pretty entertaining), and even then a wait is likely.
  15. eek...I would not put spicy anything into something meant to please a large group of kids.
  16. I guess I'm the only one whose been going (and will keep going) to Eventide's bar for their food and good happy hour deals. $3 beers/$5 wine and they'll ring up your next beer before HH ends even if it'll be another 15 minutes until you're ready for it. Also one of the quieter places to eat/meet up in that area with good food to boot. My only problem with the bar is they don't have Beefeater gin. I am a little sad to see brunch go.
  17. Additions Chinatown Coffee Baked and Wired (need password - ask cashier)
  18. I tried this once, it was not easy. I had been told by trainers/doctors for years it would, among other health benefits, help my breathing for running. False, it made no discernible difference. You can lose weight while still eating cheese, just eat less. Or if that's too hard, just make it your whole meal (only half kidding).
  19. I had a cheese I really liked at a Liberty Tavern/Lyon Hall/Northside Social establishment and went to try and buy some at Whole Foods. I realized just ordering that cheese for all three choices on a cheese plate was actually cheaper than retail. I enjoy the fromage blanc from cowgirl creamery, partially because of its bang for the buck.
  20. FYI - According to the Post, Galileo III is owned by a company which is co-managed by Roberto's wife and a long time business partner/occasional bookeeper of Roberto. So, hypothetically speaking, it would be entirely possible for the restaurant's success to benefit Roberto in ways that cannot be garnished/seized.
  21. Rustico is open for lunch on weekends - I'd try calling today during their slow hours and asking if you can get their polenta dish or any other dinner menu dish made GF for lunch.
  22. There will always be owners and chefs like the Soup Nazi, and there will always be customers that compare what they are served to an entree from the grocer's freezer. There will also always be people who relish attention from someone with a minor amount of 'fame'. There is no litmus test to prevent these people from joining; nor is their commentary always entirely useless. Fortunately, in a board like this they are easier to pick out and more likely to be called out/ignored as the situation warrants. When all else fails, I think this is an important point: The point of this board might be to foster communication, but sometimes its best to be silent, especially when there is a good chance the conversation won' t be constructive.
  23. Bourbon would fit the bill - but the under 21 is probably an issue.
  24. arugula pesto? (unless you think the greens are too watery/bland...)
  25. They serve Schlitz (in cans) at the Red Derby in Columbia Hts.
