  1. If you are willing to cross the river, 80% chance you could get seats walk-in at Eventide. Faccia Luna also has a surprisingly decent beer list and should have seats. Paradiso does have a great beer list, but it gets mobbed pretty easily.
  2. They 'winter' here in DC, so I'm guessing they want to sell their summer catch here once they come down for the season. If they are interested in informing the public about responsible fishing at the same time they are selling its a little harder to do at a fish store. While not local per se, still sounds like their mission of having people know their food source and buying responsibly might fit with the ethos of some farmers market. I'm guessing the real question is - are there any that are well attended without locally produced restrictions?
  3. They are serving DC Brau's pale ale now at Liberty Tavern instead of Dales Pale Ale and for good reason. Tastes very similar to Dales, but a little less hoppy. A great drinkable beer - DC Brau has set a high bar for the other DC brewery upstarts to meet.
  4. Split the Austrian Goulash with spaetzle, a tomato goat cheese salad and a half carafe of GrĂ¼ner Veltliner (which yielded two 1.5 glass servings for $9.95) for lunch. The goulash was great, especially the spaetzle -- the best I've ever had. The spaetzle was almost noodle like in length and buttery in taste. I may see if I can have just spaetzle and a sprinkle of Parmesan next time I go. I had neglected to keep this in my regular rotation. but the manager still remembered us. We will be back soon. They are also serving a few Korean dishes now - but it sounds like just for lunch.
  5. Do you happen to remember what other vegetables vendors had last week? Looking to go this weekend and wonder if there will be much besides Asparagus.
  6. Easy - Breakfast casserole. Put cubed bread, cooked ground sausage in a pyrex, pour over egg, top with cheese. Its supposed to soak overnight in the fridge, usually bakes in about a half hour to 45 min. You can add other stuff, i.e. onions, peppers, bacon, etc. Here is a recipe.
  7. If you are flexible in what you buy, the Ballston Harris Teeter has phenomenal deals. This week alone, grapes are $1 a lb, whole pineapples are $2 and mangos are .75 ish each. Last week strawberries were insanely cheap. I've also found their seafood selection is good, and not prohibitively expensive like WF. Harris Teeter has really good sales on items I eat and if you tailor your purchases around them its definitely cheaper than Giant.
  8. The old owners, and their dumpster, disappeared a few weeks ago. I'm hoping these new business owners are careful if they are renting from the old owners. Papi pollo and Pike Grille have low 5 figures worth of tax debt still owed to Arlington County. I'd hate for a Boccato Gelato situation to happen again. The one unique thing on their menu for the area is the Wiink burger with peanut butter.
  9. FYI - I've seen doughnuts at Northside (which looked the same as Lyon Halls) on the weekends if you want your doughnut fix on the go or just one doughnut at a time.
  10. Have had some pretty darn good NYish style pizza here recently. The pepperoni and salami on the Genoa has been sliced generously thick and the beer list here is not too shabby (Avery Brown, Epic IPA, Oberon among others). Why anyone would wait 90 minutes down the street for Fireworks Pizza with Faccia Luna nearby is beyond me.
  11. Hanks Oyster Bar in East Dupont is open until midnight and has a weekend raw bar Happy Hour from 11pm to midnight. Small subdued crowd the one time I was there that late, albeit in the winter.
  12. I have been to Orso a few times since the switch and its true the restaurant is evolving. The change in the pizza I've noticed has been slight; a minor decrease in the puff of the crust, and a crispier bottom (sacrilege to some, welcome to others). I think Orso's appetizers have generally been short changed - especially the specials. The olive oil poached chicken from several months ago was probably the best chicken I've ever had, mostly because it didn't taste like chicken. The cod fish fritters, smoked eggplant crostini, and most recently a ricotta with fried artichokes have all been delicious. As part of the change, the kitchen has started making fresh pasta dishes and revamped the menu. The aracini have changed - smaller, more per order, and some red pepper thrown in the mix. There are some springy items like the ricotta, pea shoot, fava bean and pancetta pizza we enjoyed that had a welcome kick of spice from somewhere. The smoked bocconcini and grilled asparagus spears topped with lightly dressed arugula, and preserved lemon slices has rightfully made the full time menu after spending some time on the specials board - perfect mix of creamy, salty, sweet, pepper and spring. It sounds like the new menu will be changing seasonally. Adam (who worked for a while at Trummers) and the new chef are using their experience to play around with the specials and apps -- I think Orso is turning into more than just a pizza restaurant ala 2Amys -- and I don't think that's a bad thing.

I met people here every once in a while for Happy Hour, and that's been the policy for a while at the main bar (oddly I don't remember them doing this at the side one - but you usually can't get drafts there). If you have a waitress at a table its not an issue. While I'd be furious if something happened to it, this place can get packed, and with their clientele (esp later in the night) I see why they do it. 1) Cuts down on people leaving their credit card bc they don't want to wait to get it back (not sure how tips work in this situation, but I assume the bartender gets screwed) 2) Cuts down on the number of open tabs, which I'm assuming is logistically easier 3)Prevents people from calling and reporting the card stolen (a completely juvenile/asshole thing that I would not put above the patrons here). That being said, they have my favorite nachos in the Clarendon area - they use regular cheese and queso.
  14. The article states he owes $11,400 in back taxes for 2009 and 2010. It has nothing to do with any rent he is (rightfully or unrightfully) owed. The 160K is for back rent, late fees and attorneys fees.
  15. For some reason they put a lot of info on their facebook page and not their website. I've noticed other restaurants do this as well -- often I feel like I have to check a restaurant's website, facebook, and twitter...annoying.
  16. Recently I've had Bistro La Bonne's (once) and Lyon Hall's tartare (several times). La Bonne's was decent - simply dressed, served with a pretty sizable green salad, a few gherkins and cone of okay frites -- enough for a meal. I've enjoyed Lyon Hall's tartare more - similar portion size of the tartare, but served with a yolk on top, a little gherkin mixed in and mustard dots on the side -- its more of an app or light meal as its only served with crisps (which I ask them to sub out for bread - and they have no problem doing).
  17. For a less crowded place Thursday night good bets are Eventide, Northside Social (more casual wine and beer only), and Willow. Liberty Tavern, Lyon Hall and Rustico are usually mobbed Wed-Sat...but its raining, so they might actually be pleasant tonight.
  18. Papi Pollo has been closed and under renovation for a few weeks now. Yesterday the third concept for this place in 1 year was revealed via a hand painted sign in the window. Wiinky's Fresh Grill (trademarked no less) will be the new name for this place. What type of food that entails, I do not know, but they do seem to be trying to improve the decor inside. The same management from Pike Grill and Papi Pollo appears to still be in control (the same fleet of Beamers and other vehicles still park there).
  19. I cannot vouch for the food, as I haven't eaten there in years, but the Cocoa beach pier will deliver when it comes to atmosphere (open air, on a pier, beach/ocean below). Appears they have a Sunday brunch too. Tried alligator there for the first time, tasted like chicken. I've also attended several Brevard County Manatees games (again a long time ago) at Space Coast Stadium...did not know until this post that's the Nationals spring training facility.
  20. Matchbox in Chinatown has a decent brunch (and huge portions) and opens at 10:00am. Not sure if they do reservations for brunch, but the one time I went it was fairly empty for a while and we got there right at 10:00am.
  21. I've read its open w/$1 oysters and drink specials 5-7pm weekdays. Stopped in mid-afternoon on Sunday and went upstairs for some oysters. No one was up there to serve - but it looked to be open and there were signs for super bowl specials. **This is in reference to the new Cackle bar at the Georgetown location
  22. Purchased a growler today for an early Valentine's gift. The iota growler - steel handle and all - is a sight to behold, and a quick internet search revealed that the steel is a steal (and/or investment) at $22 (before filling). I'm sure any beer lover would prefer this over a dozen roses next week. If you are tired of jockeying for a table at northside, iota is also a worthy substitute. Pour over coffee, and foam art thats slightly more abstract (purposefully? yes.), wifi, sandwiches and tons of seats.
