  1. Not sure of Pike Grills relation to other 'Pike' establishments, but the new chicken joint is run by the same people that ran Pike Grill - they just repainted the place and changed the menu.
  2. La Union is notable for being the first restaurant I've been to that has served competent Mexican AND Salvadorian food. The El Tipico and Enchilada Trio both hit the spot on our first visit. The service is exceedingly friendly, and prices here are several dollars less than similar places in the area (El Ranchero, El Paso Cafe, Uncle Julios). Glad I was persuaded by the sales pitch for the 32 oz. Regia Beer - coldest, lightest lager between the 88th and 89th meridians.

    Lunch Deals

Bibiana does a glass wine + Pasta + scoop of gelato for $15 at the bar. Picked from 2 wines, 5+ pastas, and 5+ gelato flavors when I was there recently.
  4. Cheese Making for Dummies (or why you'll never need to buy ricotta cheese again)
  5. Is any store bought dough better than another? (specifically Italian Store v. Whole foods v. Trader Joes)
  6. Impulsively went to Bibiana over Proof for lunch and was very glad I did. The Bucatini pasta was delicious and perfectly cooked, although not as spicy as one might think a dish with red chili would be. Greco wine hit the spot on a hot day. The Lunch deal is a fantastic value - Wine, Bread Service, Pasta, Gelato for $15.
  7. A pizza and an appetizer split between two adults at orso is a satisfying meal, and can be had for under $20 (pre-tip). It's the same price as 2amys and only a minor mark-up from Pupatella (a smaller place w/o waiters) - I don't really understand the complaints.
  8. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the mushroom burger. Its by no means a healthy option - two portobello caps deep fried together with a molten core of cheese - but after my first one, I stopped ordering a hamburger when I'm here.
  9. Fried plantains are pretty good and during Happy Hour its buy one get one free apps and $2 drafts - sidewalk seating included.
  10. We ordered off the Tallula menu at Eatbar fairly recently (since the menu change). Just asked if we could and they gave us the menus - didn't seem like a big deal.
  11. Had a late dinner last night; Orso was no longer packed and the service was prompt. Pizzas looked consistently good and ours was delicious. After two visits I can say its my favorite pizza in the area - so far (for me) its been more consistent than 2Amys and the atmosphere is better to boot. The Left Handed Good JuJu beer on draft is a good summer beer with ginger in it - reminded me of Gina's recession cocktail. Also enjoyed the Potato Crocche - everything I had hoped Arby's Loaded Potato Bites would be and more.
  12. I was recently in a similar situation as you (i.e. unexpected windfall and therefore a chance to eat at a place I normally could not) and decided to go to Palena. It was a great meal and very relaxing - I was very happy with my choice.
  13. Greenberry's in Mclean serves frozen yogurt with toppings - so there really are some obvious Trademark Law issues at play here. The name choice is really weird if they are not related to Greenberry's - Greenberry's seems to have a straight forward case and should send them a cease and desist letter asap.
  14. I recently got a Living Social coupon and was wondering the same thing? Can you just walk-in and use it?
  15. Stopped in the other day for an iced tea break and saw they are now serving a Lobster sandwich (!?) for 16.99 (!?) or 6.99 for a half sandwich. The stranger in front of me in line and I had a good laugh at the idea of a Lobster sandwich at Panera. Has anyone purchased this monstrosity?
  16. I'll echo the Old Ebbitt/Clydes sentiments. I've had many a raw oyster and they serve the best at a good price to boot. If you go to 'fancier' places they often wash them and ruin the brininess. The Cannon's Fish Market in gtown also has very tasty oysters at an affordable price if you are looking for a to-go option.
  17. Little different than quiznos - it was just the bread that was toasted, the ends were esp. crispy. And I'm with you, I've never seen one with toasted bread before either.
  18. Got a roasted pork Ban Mih today sans jalapenos with the mild mayo - didn't want to sweat at my desk. Sandwich was okay - not great, but the price ($5 w/o coupon) is a good deal for the area. Pork was really dry and the mayo rescued the sandwich - prob get the tofu next time and see how it is. Other down side - bread was also a little over toasted and crumbled away as a result. My overall impression - good deal for a sandwich if you are in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
  19. Stopped in tonight for dinner, coffee, and studying. Sandwich was really tasty - the pork belly with broccoli rabe and mozzarella. Also came with a small fruit salad. Compared it to the pork sandwich at Taylor - maybe unfairly bc of the size and style but the ingredients reminded me of it. The cheese was not nearly as prominent but the sandwich still tasted balanced, albeit slightly greasy - it was a pannini with fatty pork. Not as good as taylors, but again prob an unfair comparison. Thought the price ($7) was fair and reflected the size/quality of it. Classic cappuccino was exactly how I remembered it from murky - delicious! Now for my companion's take... I [Companion #1] stopped by for coffee this morning; it was fantastic. Absolutely perfect (the apology for the slightly skewed foam art was unnecessary; the cappuccino was fantastic - call it a clef and you're golden). Now for my evening experience... Ordered a 6oz glass of the Blaufraenkisch at $11. The wine was delicious, but let's talk about the pour. The first server poured a glass that was slightly below the widest point of Northside's red wine glasses. It looked more than a little short (in the glass and in the newly opened bottle), and I asked if it was a 6oz or 3oz - my eyes aren't that bad. The server assured me that the glasses were large, and it was indeed a 6oz pour. That would have been the end of the story, but at the same time, the customer next to me ordered two 6oz pours that a 2nd server filled at least a fat finger above the mid-point of his glass. Not to be a bastard, because my server looked like she was new on the job (or industry), I asked the 2nd server if my glass was a 6oz-er... referring to the 2 glasses that he had just poured. The response was, "those were special circumstances." So, special circumstances are cool, and I understand them, but what really set me off was seeing 3 more glasses of red and white come out with pours well above my 6oz. "More special circumstances," I assume. I feel like a shit for ratting on the cool kids, but guys, don't make me want to bring a measuring cup next time I visit. If you say, "yeah, that looks a little short" and give me an extra splash, I leave happy and probably forget about the whole thing. Now, it's like an itch that I can't scratch.
  20. Its game week at Rocklands - Bison steak sandwich, Ostrich Burger and Elk Sausage on collard greens. Had the sausage, pretty good, even though it was a little too charred for my taste. It was packed on Monday, although that's probably due to Monday's free pulled pork sandwich with purchase of a beer deal.
