  1. When I was growing up, this was the way my mom would fix it, (yes to the lemon and celery) plus a little black pepper. I was spoiled by growing up on a river and catching & cooking the crabs the same day, so none of the crab salad I have anymore lives up the memory of the flavor back then.
  2. Birds, chipmunks and other assorted critters plus the excessive heat and lack of rain wiped me out for tomatoes this year. I harvested all of one small, leather-skinned matey. And the last fruit on the vine got plucked whole and green by some creature last night with nary a seed to be found left behind.
  3. Took some visiting relations here for breakfast on Sunday. The staff is really showcasing the new local menu, and they've grouped all the heart-healthy/under 600 calories meals on one menu page. There are also several gluten-free selections to choose from. I had a basic waffles & eggs & sausage platter, but the sausage was a couple of very decent, plump pork links. Sister in law got the black bean & egg burrito with guac and said it was good, brother had some of hers and said it was excellent. Brother got an omelet with goat cheese for his entree and devoured it in seconds and loved it. All the mains have gone up a buck or two since the menu update, but the better ingredients make it worth the cost, IMO. Service was very good and friendly. SD has also instituted a rewards card, so you get a point for each visit that at least 1 entree is ordered, and after five visits, you get $5 off your bill.
  4. I'd add Black's Restaurant Group to B.A.R.'s list and Cathal Armstong's group of restaurants
  5. salad made of grilled vegetables and you do the grilling the day before, because they taste better when the dressing has had a chance to settle in overnight. Weather this hot screams for ceviche (whatever the Italian word for that is). Bowls of good olives and a big antipasto platter.
  6. My sis was in town and loves middle eastern food (which she can't get in her area), so I took her to Jerusalem for dinner. We got hummus, dolmas, the ground beef kabob (name escapes me right now) and lamb makluba. All the food was very good, the service a bit slow and not very attentive -- no offers to refill our water, plates sitting on the table for a long time , and then after 20 minutes of trying to get someone's attention, we finally were able to ask for the check and then it never came. After another 10-15 minutes of waiting, we finally gave up, threw some money on the table and left. Such a shame that the poor service left such a bad impression when the food was so good.
  7. To me, the lentils tasted sour and fermented and musty all at the same time. If I detected that taste in a bowl of leftovers in my fridge, I'd immediately toss it as something that had gone off.
  8. Joined friends here tonight for dinner. We each got a sambussa, then shared the special vegi platter and the doro wat. It was my first time having Ethiopian food, and I didn't taste anything that I particularly liked, and the yellow lentils on the vegi platter were something I hope I never taste again. The teff injera was the best part of the meal. Nice setting, pleasant wait staff, and I like the communal platter and eat with your hands.....but not the food. It's just not my thing.
  9. I went thru a McD's drive-thru window on the Saturday before July 4th, as I was leaving town on 95-S at the buttcrack of dawn, and ordered an iced coffee with plain milk only -- and I was that specific about my order: unsweetened, only iced coffee and plain milk. And that's what the video screen at the order post showed back to me. I got on the highway and discovered I had gotten the 6 pumps of sweetened flavored milky crap added. For someone who abhors sweetened coffee (unless we're talking the ice cream flavor), it was definitely too sweet and the flavoring was awful as well. I have no idea if their iced coffee is any good or not because the coffee flavor was completely obliterated by the un-asked for additions. Next time -- if there is a next time -- I'll go into the store to place such an incredibly complicated order.
  10. My Boss was there for lunch today. His report was mostly to do with the physical set-up of the place. He's a big, broad-shouldered guy and felt very cramped. Also complained about the noise level, that it was hard to carry on a conversation. He didn't say what he had to eat, but did say the food was very good but small portions and pricey for the serving size. He likes good food, he just doesn't like to pay the prices that come with better ingredients and skilled BOH staff. His verdict -- he'll go to Overwood or Union Street for business lunches in the future......which makes it sound like Virtue is a perfect place for me!
  11. Someone on Chowhound suggested Cento for a good Sunday sauce style of sauce, and I like it very much. I can find it at about half of the Giant stores I go to, $3.99 a jar.
  12. Channel 4 news this a.m. said that Hook will be closed indefinitely, Tackle Box should be open within a week.
  13. I thought it was common. Maybe you're thinking of a coconut custard pie? A similar beast that has simply a plain baked surface.
  14. I've heard good things about the rings at Ted's Montana Grill from a picky eater who knows rings, but I haven't tried them myself.
  15. Thanks for the info! I guess I was harking back to the days of sitcoms with the "live studio audience."
  16. Jerusalem Restaurant in Bailey's Crossroads has a catering arm. They do enough business to have a couple of company vans to deliver the food.
  17. My office got a postcard promo from TJ Stones today. Of note: $2.50 bar food menu M-F 4-7p.m. and "great bar specials". Also, Furkin Thursdays with live cask beers (as opposed to, what? dead ones?) , and free shuffle board on Sunday and Monday.
  18. Had dinner here last night. The patio was open but because of the weather, everyone was indoors. Even at 5:30, the restaurant was busy, and by 6:15 it was packed. Our table ordered the baked artichoke appetizer to split. Extremely large and very tender, although it was cooked in so much olive oil that the taste of the oil obscured most of the artichoke flavor. There was some stuffing in the artichoke as well but it was without any flavor apart from the oil. Four of us, and we didn't come close to finishing it. I took the leftovers home to rescue the artichoke bottom for a cold addition to a salad later on. Two of the group ordered the eggplant parmigiana, one got the Greek-style shrimp & pasta, and I got the pork souvlaki. Everything tasted nice and fresh, the red sauce on the parmigiana was very good, but nothing was a particular standout overall. The friend who ordered the shrimp & pasta said she couldn't taste anything especially Greek about the dish, it tasted like a basic Italian red-sauce shrimp & pasta.. She said it was good, just too similar to an Italian flavor profile. The pork on my souvlaki would have benefitted from more seasoning during the roasting process, and I found the sandwich skimpy on the feta and tzatziki to my preference, or at least I would like have the feta in larger crumbles even if in the same amount overall, so that when eating it there would be definite pockets of feta flavor. Price for 4 entrees, 1 app, 1 glass of wine with tax was $88, so very reasonable in cost. I ordered just the souvlaki sandwich, which is I think $7 less than the platter (comes with fries and a salad), so getting the platter would have bumped the bill to $95. The service was excellent and the decor is warm and cozy. Note, though, if you haven't been before that it's a small place, and the booths and tables are all on the smaller side, and space between is fairly close as well. Beware of women with large purses coming thru! The restaurant also uses a lot of large, square plates, so the tabletop gets very crowded very quickly. We were at a booth, and with 4 dinner plates, a half-dozen glasses, a bread basket, a couple of bread plates, you had to hunt for the spot to put your glass back down without knocking into other things.
  19. If we do, I request the dan dan noodles and spicy spinach lasagna recipes...and the gorgonzola bacon mac & cheese....and the swiss chard salad...and the brownies..... Hmmm...maybe I should just say ALL the recipes
